    a friend of mine used to fly rc helicopters and do the most amazing tricks i have ever seen, he would fly it inverted heading straight down to the ground and flip it right side up and land it. i never realized how good he really was until i watched all these videos

      I'm sure you're friend is really good, but this is just realistic flight and what you seem to be talking about is more like 3d flight, and there are many impressive videos about that with tricks more similar to the ones you mention. Maybe you want to check them out, you might enjoy rewatching some of those tricks :)

    I was into rc for 30+ yrs. I had a large scale elec H-500E with full cockpit/pilots etc. When things go bad it usually happens quick and in a flash that incredible, complex harmony of moving parts turns into a pile of pieces. A 5 cent bolt or control arm on my tail broke leading to my 500e's destruction. I fly quads now and just do not have the time/passion to pursue scale helis any more.

    This is a classic PHT3 clutch problem, under heavy load the clutch bell slip around the shaft and you loss rotor rpm but the turbine still run well without loss turbine rpm. You need to put some expoxy glue between shaft and clutch bell then tight very well the collar on the bell.

Also, I find it interesting that the pilot/owner did such an incredible job on his build with everything _except_ the anti-collision/nav lights. The only one that appears to be to scale is the red beacon on the underside of the tail boom. The rest seem to be flashing too fast and/or shouldn't be flashing at all. He was well away from the flight line, if fact, he had been flying the model a lot closer to himself, and everyone else, just before that so hitting someone really wasn't an issue here.
      I agree, he piloted the model very nicely up to the final arrival. As good as he was with everything else he did, he still needs to work on his autorotation technique!

      Indeed, the motor/blades def lost power. I am wondering if he just ran out gas.

      yeah it's easy to see the speed of the rotors change due to the camera shutter freezing them. I thought that was nice the way you could see four perfect mostly stationary blades for most of the flight, and then right at 5 it slowed (or sped up, you can't tell which) and then quickly stabilized, but then started slowing farther and farther. Being a heli-model flyer myself I'd bet he noticed and was feeding more and more power as he turned around to get lined up for an auto rotate. He didn't move fast enough though, by the time he got in position and was just lining up to start it, he ran out of throttle on his stick and it came down like a rock before he could get any forward momentum going. (or he had little/no experience with auto rotating, or THAT particular help may have been tricky to AR)

    At exactly 5:00 you can see the heli losing so much power, the loss of
    torque causes it to temporarily yaw to the right, gyro kicks in to
    compensate followed by a twitch. That should have been a dead giveaway
    that something went wrong. I've been in this position before and have
    avoided a few crashes by detecting the slightest warning signs.

    • @kirbylee57
      @kirbylee57 Před 6 lety

      I think he knew there was a problem before the 5:00 mark, and did what he could to save it. What would you have done?

    • @mSparks43
      @mSparks43 Před 6 lety +1

      existing problem or not, at 5:34 he goes noes down then pulls up sharply, reducing forward airspeed to nearly zero with a lot of down speed, at that point, problem or not, 500hp or 0hp, its in a vortex ring state, any power is going into circulating air through the blades and not producing lift, and the crash is certain. czcams.com/video/I6ClTyFHlcM/video.html

      At certain point in time scale means scale for everything. Also for aerodynamics. And, no whatever skilled 3D pilot could have recovered the heli without the awareness of "howto recover from a vortex ring state".
