- As promised here's the on board footage of the Brun C91 Group C car managed by Scott Sport and driven impeccably by Alex Müller ( / alexmueller79 ) during the 2023 Dix Mille Tours by @peterautoracing at Circuit Paul Ricard. Enjoy a couple of laps from his qualifying session with an amazing pole lap in which he managed to take the famous Signes corner flatout coming from the full Mistral staight!
The Brun C91 was built by Walter Brun's Brun Motorsport of Switzerland. The company was founded in 1983 as a World Sportscar Championship team when the Group C regulations was reaching its peak. Success was there and the team would go on to win the 1986 WSC championship with the Porsche 962.
In 1989, he had the ambitious project of racing in parallel in Formula One and endurance racing and for 1991, with the introduction of the 3.5-litre engines in 'Group C', he aimed to create both a single-seater and a prototype fitted with a 3.5L 70° V12 engine called Neotech. This was to be the common point between the two cars, but was never fitted in either the F1 car or the prototype. Yet tests carried out in 1990 with a Porsche 962C gave impressive results. But the funding never came.
The new Sportscar Racing regulations banned turbo engines and rotary engines in favour of atmospheric engines with a maximum displacement of 3.5 litres. The number of cylinders was left free. No changes were made to the dimensions of the chassis. On the other hand, the minimum weight was sharply reduced from 900 kg to 750 kg so the use of carbon fibre became standard.
Development of the C91 started in 1989 and by December 1990, 75% of the work was completed but yet with the engine headache to sort out. The C91 was designed to host any engine configuration so the team had to make some compromises to optimize spaces such as the body shape, front cooling rather than on the side of the chassis (to leave space for a possible turbo engine) and rear suspension placed outboard next to the rear wheels in order to maximize the tunnel size. By the end the team opted for a Judd EV, 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine that was being used in Formula 1 on the 1990 Leyton House CG901 and by Brabham with their BT59. It was linked to a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Brun C91 made its debut at the fifth round of the 1991 World Sportscar Championship at the Nürburgring driven by Oscar Larrauri and Gregor Foitek. Unfortunately, the car didn't race due to technical difficulties after qualifying. The next round being in Magny-Cours, Jesus Pareja replaced Foitek and the car did start the race only to retire after five laps. Next round was in Mexico City where the C91 lasted 31 laps before retiring with starter motor issues. Its last round in Autopolis, Japan, wasn't better: it failed again after 20 laps when the gearbox broke. The funding for 1992 failed to materialize and the C91 would be retired putting an end to Brun Motorsport and its presence in the World Sportscar Championship.

I love it when Private teams as such that own these classic cars hire current professional racing drivers and they don't hold back on the cars. Brilliant to watch!
I didn't expect a Group C car to only lift off a bit for the corner right after hitting top speed on the straight. That is damn impressive lol
The ground effect aero on the 3.5L Group C cars was pretty damn effective. The Toyota took T1 at what is now Sydney Motorsports Park at about 320 kph, breaking two drivers' ribs in the process.
Here it is in action:

These late group c cars made silly amounts of downforce. It’s the weight that lets them down compared to the f1 cars of the time.
He did take it flat.
I watched it several times, what attachments.
Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating to watch historic racing when a driver can't get close to the limit of the car. In this case, though, it's the exact opposite. This guy is a proper driver and it's a joy to watch this car being driven on the limit.
Take a look at the channels of Robbert Alblas, Privateer HK, Basti78 to name a few and report back. There’s so much awsome current historic race videos on top of the main event channels, I don’t have enough time to view it all 😆
Wow! What a masterpiece, the shifting is amazingl.
Always a joy to get more Group C content! Thanks, Bozzy! \o_
No worries!
Perfect view ❤ and symphony 🤘
Was e Brett,so ein geiler scheiss! Damals mussten die Rennfahrer noch arbeiten...24 h mit 2 Fahrern, heute undenkbar
Flat through Signes! Nice to see this car finally fulfilling its potential.
Wow very impressive on-board laps!!Flat out most corners
I've never seen a Muller who messes around in a race car.
Dude is straight beast-mode.
none of them play around
Long live Walti Brun 🇨🇭
And the Judd V10 😘
Glorious driving of Alex 👌
That was masterful filming, editing, and driving!
What a wet-dream that would be. Thank you for sharing this, and long live group C!!
We saw this car testing at Donington Park U.K. back in March. Beautifully prepared, it looked like a brand new car.
Thanks for the post !
Greetings from Brazil ! 🇧🇷
Holy cow that second lap was blistering. What a drive
What a fantastic noise that engine creates. Glorious. Good old days.
Thank you for the uninterrupted in-car video. Awesome sound!
One of the best looking group C cars!
That thing looks seriously fast and sounds absolutely amazing!
What a beauty it is 😍😍
One can afford all the car in the world. Driving a group C is earned with skills only!
It's the shifting, nothing beats the H.
smashing gears, not a clutch in sight lol
semi-auto sequential would
@@roku_nine isn't it a dogbox?
Nice Nice !!! Nice car and amazing driving !!!
group c cars are so damn sexy
Almost flat out in Signes 😈
Damn this thing is PLANTED! damn aeroplane with wheels
Bello vedere e sentire finalmente una gruppo C portata al limite.
seen this reminded me that somehow, we lost something along the way in todays motorsport.....and damn, it was good!
First video of yours I have watched. Good stuff!
OMG that flyby at 7:00
Thanks for the awesome footage Brother ..! US salutes you .!
No problem at all!
Amazing video. This looks and sounds exactly like me in my Nissan Sentra (manual gearbox) driving my wife to work every morning.
Alex Muller drove the shit out of that car. Nice to see someone really going at it and not babying the car.
Experience is everything
I remember when the stunning C91 was unveiled, it seemed that the 3.5 litre formula was going to have a good future when a privateer went to all that effort and huge expense to create their own car.
Interesting to see this, but why was the new N/A 3.5 liter formula unsuccessful?
absolute race car and driving porn, much respect for pushing a car like this to the limit
Teal is the most 90's livery color there is, and it has aged very well.
Really cool shots from the inside....and of course from the outside also😅
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Seeing these cars actually get pushed is a thing to behind. These things are fast by modern standards, imagine watching them in the 80s-90s.
I really wonder if group C were to come back with modern materials and safety standards how it would perform viewer wise. I know Hypercar is faster, but this is pure enthusiast bliss
Luckily they use the full Mistral straight. :D
That's a thing, Hypercars can take a lesson
Long way from NASCAR Craftsman Trucks …2003
French people looking at the car:
Zis car isn't brown!
Is that a 962?...Looks like it but doesnt sound like it
Drivers of this era are just other worldly - ZERO driver aid.... Did they even have hydration packs back then?
Und wieder ein Rennwagen mit einem richtigen Lenkrad, und nicht mit so einem Joystick wie in modernen Karren.....
And a real mechanic gearbox... 👍😉‼️💯🛢️🔥🏁🏎️🤓
@@kikiautorcman787B Yes, there is still manual work involved......
Gruppe C war das Grösste 🙌
@@Inazuma68 Die Prototypen der 70er Jahre ( CanAm und Interserie ) bleiben für mich persönlich auf ewig die Nr.1..........
This ia bit... nsfw lol. XD
Super quick racecar! Your not fighting for the championship, so why so fast? Think about your life, one small mistake and your dead (just saying).
I get the sentiment, but the counterpoint is that nobody would EVER want to climb out of that and remember how much they held-back. I’d be in that camp for sure.
Because racedriver.
The music of this motor is toxic
