I recorded Sultans Of Swing! I can’t believe it myself. After 5 years of studying Mark’s songs under the microscope, I’m finally ready to attempt playing his magnum opus, at least in the eyes and ears of his audience. Ask your questions about this song and I’ll answer them in a proper Songbook lesson. Obviously, not gear-related questions, please! It’s not easy to record, especially for a bedroom guitar player like me, so I chose the take with the least amount of mistakes. There are a few pretty unfortunate mistakes, but I like the way I dealt with them. How, you ask? I just don’t care! Pavel.
Equipment
Guitar: Fender Squier Mini Stratocaster Torino Red
Amp: Fender Mustang Micro (All setting is RED)
Edited in Final Cut Pro X & Logic Pro X Apps
Cameras: iPhone 11 Pro, Canon EOS M6
Strings: D'Addario EXL117 11-56
The sound comes directly through Mustang Micro, I only applied a compressor in Logic. The guitar is stock except for the tuning machines.

Holy mother of Christ, your playing was so CLEAN I'd be willing to eat my lunch on that guitar. Awesome, Pavel! And you look great too, hope things are working out for you in these times
Lmao that's one I haven't heard before..
Efforlessly conveys the perfect feeling of this Knopfler piece. Nothing left behind. Nothing extra added. Amazing. Hat's off to you. 🙏 *edited for spelling
The best way to celebrate MK's birthday.
Fuck me sideways! Never thought the guitar part in this song was THAT complex and diverse. I mean, it's Sultans of Swing, I get it, but when you watch that outro closely, not just listen to it, you realize it on a different level. I guess now I respect and adore Mark's music even more.
Outstanding performance, by the way, as always.
This gave me chills as I always get when I listen to this song. I literally watched it back to back twice in a row lol. I would love to learn it one day, this was amazing. Thank you for sharing!
That's why people love this song! It certainly deserves all the love. And of course, I'll make more videos about it.
Finally. I have wanted you to do this for a while.
BRAVOOO!!! You wanted to achieve perfection, you achieved perfection. Now we will all await your lesson for this. There are so many already in place, but I am quite sure your's will be the best.
Yes! 🤘
So precise, so clean, so accurate ! Thanks !
Well done for MK's birthday 😅
Mark Knopfler 🥳🎈
Just Wow...will be waiting for SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA Solo
Another pearl from the master! Is It me or the Stratocaster got washed in iced water?
Super. That tone on a Squier! Impressive
Amazing as always, doing it without any form of backing tracks and making it sound so complete is showing how skilled you are. Have been playing this song for years but not even close to how you do it. Still struggle to learn the last solo right, getting up to speed and making it sound clear is very difficult. Good job!
eh i h8 2 break it 2 u but he's listening to a backing track in his ears
@@Iseomagicpromotion I was talking about what his playing sounds like without a backing track, for me as a listener. There's no room for mistakes when the only thing the listeners hear is his guitar. With a backing track you get away with minor mistakes much easier. If he listens to a backing track og click track is beside my point and does not take away that he is a great guitar player.

Just beautiful 👏👏👏
Absolutely brilliant! Mark would be proud!!!
You're master!
Great technique my friend! Your videos on Mark Knopfler got me started on the electric guitar back in 2020 when I picked up the guitar for the first time in 12 years and were a massive help in learning Mark's techniques. I feel like we've been on this musical journey together. It's great to see the production quality has gone up as well! :D Keep the videos coming, they're inspiring.
What a perfect way to celebrate Marks birthday
Yeah, I'd touch Sultans only on a special occasion lol.
Pavel, very few men can play at that level. Kudos.
Awesome playing man! You've helped me learn so many Mark Knopfler songs, so I just wanted to say a big thanks, and great cover!
Great present for MK's birthday thank you
Great work excellent detailed performance 👍
Bravo!
You are a very talented man Pavel. Thank you for sharing. I hope you get well rewarded for your hard work.
Fab as always 👍🏻
Spectacular
Way too modest a write-up for such a clean and well-executed performance.
Great work, great tone, love the rakes, love everything about it.
Another fine posting ☺️👍
Professional cover with very humble equipment Pavel, a lot of lessons embedded 👍🏻
I like the way you use a cheap 21 fret guitar!! It proves a point!!
Happy Birthday to the guitar hero
Pavel the love and passion you put in every note your music is an inestimable thing
The right hand accuracy is crazy as always
Thanks a lot for sharing all of this and for the hard work
Awesome!!
This is just perfect, so clean and accurate!
That was perfection at its best! Loved it!!
Just realized you did this on a mini! Kudos my friend.
Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!
NEAT!.
Brilliant 🙌
Excellent cover as usual, thanks a lot for the time and effort, great tab too !

💙
This is so good.
Awesome job. Love it!
I sometimes forget how much I love this song.. Awesome as usual Pavel, so clean and fluid. I'm sure I'll be rewatching this dozens of times trying to learn figure out the many parts I don't play correctly lol.
Wow, that was superb!!!
Perfect !👏
Flawless 👏👏
Bravo Pavel, i can only see your chanel takeing off to new hieghts.
PS anyone remember Pavel telling us soloing wasn't his thing.
Thank you! Don't know about heights, but playing solos is almost a necessity. It's still not my thing as I'm a bad improviser. I can learn and teach things though. And I think it's what I should do more.
Boom 💥 nice cover!!
Enjoyed it, thanks. Good job 👍
Cool! Well done. I like it. 😀
Recorded straight from the micro?! Absolute mad man. This sounds fantastic! I gotta try recording with that thing. Best money I've ever spent on a little guitar gadget.
Cheers!
About a year ago I cast my doubts over the Mustang Micro when Pavel mentioned he was getting it. But after his Water Of Love video, I thought of giving it a try, and indeed it's a brilliant piece of equipment.
Glad you liked it! I think for its price it's a no-brainer. A little piece of magic.
Pavel, thanks for this video and especially for the closeup camera view of the right hand technique. This song uses a lot of string muting and your video makes it much easier to see it than any other video I've seen on CZcams. As a beginner, I'd love to see a short video that shows step-by-step how the muting is done. It is totally by the right hand, the heel of the hand or is the left hand involved as well. Thanks again for a great video and the TABS as well.
I just found your "Sultans of Swing Q&A" Live stream video where you explained how you do that basic rhythm strum that sounds like you're muting the strings. Thanks a lot! Also, I really like that you do your playing WITHOUT a backing track so we can really hear what you are playing and not having the sound muddied by other instruments.
A red strat and her man.
EXCELENTE😄
Very nice. Be lucky
Good stuff, hope it gets a lot of views
That's never guaranteed. Knowing me, I'm not waiting for a lot of views!
Can't have patience for a tutorial for this one, if I learn to play this one is enough for me with guitar playing 😍😅
👍👍🙏
Nice job. Getting in those fills is tricky.
Yes, it is hard indeed. But for me, any piece of music is hard, actually :D
Thank you!
Comunque eccezionale 👏👏👏
how to write an intelligible comment under this vid?
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh
thank you Pavel !
initial strumming tutorial!!!
Pavel is the best there is. Do you buy any chance have the alchemy version?
can you make a tutorial where you show us how to play the same you playing pls 🙏
Of course!
@@PavelFomenkov oh thank you so much gonna wait for it 🙏
Hi Pavel, recently discovered your channel, incredible mate 👏 👏👏. I will make my way through the videos but wondered if there was a breakdown of your right hand technique. I understand you will have put many many hours of practice, but where would I start in learning the right hand technique? Thanks for the content, it really is brilliant 👍🎸
You are the best. But what are the rule for using thumb and fingers: strong beat : thumb, weak beat: finger?
Hello Pavel, great cover of sultans of swing!!! I am a fan of the great Mark Knopfler and this song is like an anthem for me!!! I'm currently trying to play this song and I also have a Fender Mustang Micro. I would like to know what configuration you are using on the Fender Mustang Micro to get the correct sound?
Brilliant cover as always but try and use dynamics a bit more. I don’t know if it’s the guitar or the amp but if you incorporate the mk dynamics into your playing then you’ll be 🔥 🔥🔥🔥👌👌
Congratulations...bravo..bravissimo. What a polished playing technique, amazing. The guitar looks like a mini Squier strat. PUP? I would like to ask you. How I would like to learn MK playing technique. I can handle something, but I will never be as detailed as you, sir. I will watch this video and many more every day. KISSES from Trieste ITALY.
I should buy a Strat… always thought that had to be the first thing I have to learn properly as soon as I get one.
I like a tele for its fits-everywhere, blank canvas character, but for this I feel like there is some real need for a Strat.
How many times did you listen to the isolated guitar recording? I recognize many patterns that only really come out when you have listened to it. By far the best cover I know of.
Just like with any other song... Not too much. I scheduled a week to do this song and not more, so I had to keep moving all the time. Didn't want to sit on it for months perfecting every bit possible. Yes, Strat is a majestic instrument! hopefully, I'll get another one day, probably something more elaborate than a student guitar haha.
Great effort !especially the chords strumming. The famous lick in the outro solo is done with 3 fingers not 2…You almost never see MK untie his index and middle finger…the staccato/rattling effect is done with the middle finger played right after the index finger, tied together…you tie them properly on Money for Nothing for example (which only few do)
In order to do this you need to really get into MK's playing and quite literally play like him, or in other words, force yourself to play like that. I don't want to force my style of playing, so I play it mostly how I feel. My style of playing is nothing even close to Mark's! I certainly can't play this outro with three fingers.
“You’ve played before”
Hey, does anyone know if this is the way mark plays the final solo?
Hi, Pavel here :) Nobody knows how it was played exactly, as there are no videos and live versions are different. I also made several mistakes in it that I'm aware of, so it's definitely not a textbook example. However, it's a decent try.
Awsome again pavel, how long have you been playing guitar for?
At this point close to 18 years, so more than half of my life... But it's an on-again, off-again relationship, not like I'm playing all the time. Just a hobby.
@@PavelFomenkov well, you sure play very well.I have been playing for about 12 years and Mk was the reason I started and still the reason I play, his technique is just so unique and the sounds he conjures from a guitar are exquisite..not to mention his ability to write or "craft" a song..you have the ability to recreate marks playing so accurately..you can be proud my friend,I truly enjoy watching and learning your uploads as I am sure many others do as well😊
Your playing is so good, next step might be to control your vibrato. I know Mark Knopfler makes it look easy (I think him being left handed helps!), but this would be superb if you mastered that: good, controlled vibrato.
By the way, your vibrato on the top of bent notes... pitch is really accurate well done.
Knopfler applies vibrato to the whole triad, something I don't have the strength to do well, but it really makes the chord shimmer, especially on a Strat.
It's too hard to do vibratos properly on this guitar, for instance, I can't even play 3-note vibrato on it at all. The tension's too high, the strings are too thick, and it's 11-56 gauge. But I try my best for sure! Don't ask why I'm playing on this guitar, I just don't have any other guitars and I love it. Thank you for the tips.
@@PavelFomenkov No they are not tips, just observations. You are a far better player than I am!
God bless mate, here's praying a Custom Shop Strat falls into your hands soon.
Or maybe a Les Paul.
@@PavelFomenkov I guess you have tried already, but would 10s work in this guitar? (For people that didn't play these guitars, on top of being short scale the neck is very thin, it's easy to send it out of tune when your left hand exerts forward pressure while moving for bends, vibrato, etc...). Never mind the intonation sounds spot on as well all over the fretboard.
I don't think 10s would make that much of a difference, but I probably should try it. I don't want to lose too much tone though, since it's a shorter scale neck and the tension is low... My thinking is to get the thickest strings possible to maintain the feel and tone of a big guitar.
@@PavelFomenkov I see. If you use 10s in a 25.5" it makes sense to use thicker strings here. With my mustang I tried 9s but it's too floppy, 10-46 is perfect (but on 25.5" I use 9-42). But it's very personal.
Amp settings? Any pedals?
Mustang Micro Amp, all settings are red. No pedals, no nothing! Only a guitar.
Hey Pvel, are you by any chance clone of Mark Knopfler
Lol, no, we're actually as different as any human being could be. The only thing in common for us is our love for music.
...a band is blowing dixie, double 4 times....
Excelent....!!!!!
