But after his peak and during his time at Red Bull, and after over a decade as a pundit and commentator, it is clear that was just the effect of the pressure of being the "Great British Hope" that many have suffered. DC is a classy man and competitor, more than I gave him credit for in my youth, and there were some great memories here, and I hope, as Rosanna alluded to at the beginning, younger fans are pleasantly surprised by his skill and determination. He was too much of a gentleman and sacrificed any chance he had at McLaren in 98/99 by supporting Mika. Also his decision to move to McLaren for '96 cost him a certain shot at the title for '96 and '97 with Williams (had he stayed).
He definitely had the speed but I also can't think of many other drivers who had worse luck as far as mechanical failures / reliability etc go than DC... - 7 DNF's in 1999 for example, 6 of which were mechanical!

I think DC was the main guy responsible for bringing Adrian Newey to the Red Bull team from McLaren. So instrumental in building Red Bull into the team it went onto becoming.
Seems he took a leaf out of Michael Schumacher's book on that one.

I remember meeting DC as a wee boy back in 1994 when he had just stepped up with Williams, and met him again a couple of times after. He was a class act on and off track, and always had time for fans. People forget just how quick and tenacious he could be on his day, especially early in his career. Surprised Spa 95, Spa 99 and Spain 07 didn't get a look in.

And he was highly rated by none other than Ayrton Senna himself. When he was Williams test driver Senna stood in the garage for an entire test day, watching DC test the car, listening intently to what DC said, and above praising what he brought to the team. You don't get better than that
