  • Ottawa Ontario history and cartography is explored and examined from this vintage map that was originally produced in 1895. In the video we zoom in and look at various historical aspects that give a background to the evolution of the city.
The beginning of the video includes some historical background to the city that includes information about the indigneous Algonquin tribes in the area, Samuel de Champlain, Philemon Wright, The city of Bytown, Queen Victoria's selection of the Canadian capital and much more.

Stumbled across this video and while I appreciate your motive and effort - I suggest you cut out the narrative commentary until you do more homework on Ottawa and knowing at least how to pronounce names. Cringe worthy to hear someone from afar make such a running mono log. Sorry - try better on next one.

Thank you for this Adam. It is also easy to locate exact addresses if you check out a current google map, which you can compare to this layout, with the help of the rivers & canal. Yes "eau" in Rideau is pronounced O, as is the word eau, meaning water in french. Many of us are bilingual here. I live & work in real estate here & love to see how things have evolved. Thanks again.

Fascinating. In 1828 my great great grand parents farmed in Nepean (now west Ottawa, but the earliest part settled). In 1835 they moved 60 miles up river to settle at Ile du Grand Calumet, Pontiac, Quebec. Very remote wilderness in those days. Across the river from Bytown (Ottawa) on the Quebec side of the river Aylmer and Hull were also being settled, mainly for the lumber industry. Philemon Wright came there in 1900 to start business.

It's the original post office. That's even clearly indicated in a photograph and accompanying description in the "History of Ottawa" Wikipedia article, just as I put it there. The two bridges there were replaced by the very wide Plaza Bridge in 1912, and the Post Office you see in this video used to be on the grounds for the National War Memorial. City Hall was the building on the northeast side of where Elgin meets Albert and you can see it in this video. And we ain't got no State Houses around here, where is he from? In the Wikipedia article of the "Ottawa River Timber Trade" (also by me) is another map from roughly around that era that may help you to place things, and tell you about the mills. You can see that the Canada Atlantic Railway station is on Catharine. Any serious sawmill was either on Lebreton Flats or Hull where the (fast) water is (for powering it!), so any company on Bank Street is likely pretty insignificant in comparison to Bronson's mills over the years, Booth, and Perlee and Pattee. I still think that something cool is that there was an old "Union Station" (predating the one built in 1912) located on the northwest side of Boteler and Dalhousie, and you can still see the dismantled bridge stuff in the Rideau River just a little south of Green Island's Union Street; viewable in Google Satellite view, or in person and up close right from the path in Bordeleau Park (although at times there may be somewhat limited access with a fence). And the Chief William Commanda Bridge is still unchanged from the original, as seen on this video. Not related, but interesting, is that there was also a nice looking streetcar station on Broad Street (Lebreton Flats); there are lots of photographs of it. Streetcar information is in the Wikipedia article "Ottawa Electric Railway". And lol on not even knowing that that mysterious generic "waterway" is the Ottawa River.

Loved the map! Just a quick point and a question.
As you look for the Stonehouse & Chamberlin carriage works (at 12:44) you reference the waterway and "church" in the background which are actually the Ottawa River and the Parliament of Canada buildings. Moving forward in time but before you actually pinpoint the location of the carriage works you hover your mouse directly over the Parliament of Canada buildings that are right on the Ottawa River. Hope that makes sense.
My question is whether this map is available digitally? I would absolutely love to spend some time with it myself (I live in Ottawa).

That is a great video, I have actually repaired the rips and tears and restored this map!
It's amazing how many of the street names are consistent with what exists today. The couple that have changed (Maria and King St) are because they are named after people that weren't alive at this time. Also the rail line at the top left of the map has been replaced with a highway, the manager in my office building says his house which is beside the highway contains railroad ties in the framing of the house.
I offer reprints of the repaired map if any of your community is interested in it.

The graphics are great. I appreciate your attempt to put this all together. The narrative is choppy and the pronunciation of several place names is incorrect. Keep the graphics and do a little more prep with the narrative. Run this past someone who lives and study the history of the area and then do a redo. It just needs a little polishing but this is a good starting point. There is lots of great information here. Thanks for trying to put this all together.
