  • Does the low-spec LC300 GX make sense for Aussie four-wheel drivers, or is it too basic to live with daily? We put it through an off-road torture test to find out.

    Agree, the GX is the best bet if you don't need all the luxury touches. Payload is significantly better which is a big consideration in a tourer, especially if towing a heavy van.

    Problem with the idea of premium is that everyone think interior, tech, materials, etc. the premium with the LC is the extra welding and framework.

      @richard4136 Před 2 lety +3

      Mark do you really think they do extra welds and frame work. They like everyone else do all that is required. Nothing more nothing less. Just like their leaking air boxes and ground scraping alternators. They build vehicles for profit and not any other reason. Don’t kid yourself they are better or stronger than most other manufacturers!

    Great review. Good effort in the mud on stock tyres. I also see the 300 series as a tourer and not an off-roader. I reckon the 300 Series makes a Prado a even better option. For off-roading I wish Toyota still made a SWB for either the cruiser or prado, not all of us want to tour.

    When I bought my 200 series GXL the first thing I did on the day I picked it up was to remove the third row of seats. I'm actually considering moving the 200 on and would happily buy a GX. I don't need the whiz bang terrain system, definitely don't need the third row of seats, every time I go hunting the carpet in the 200 gets dirty so vinyl flooring is fine. The GX has enough of the good stuff including radar cruise control to make it my preference of the 300 range. Thanks for a really thorough review.

    For me, it's a no brainer which I'll pick between the LC300 GX or the 76 Landcruiser. The LC300 GX everytime. And as you've said, the GX might be the base model for Australia but it's not a poverty pack. Our GX does come with many standard features compared to base model LC300s in other countries. Afterall it cost $90K+ here. Some countries' LC300 base model come with evem less gear than the GX. Like an even smaller centre screen with no Apple Car Play or Android Auto etc.

    • @arefeshghi
      @arefeshghi Před 2 lety

      GX makes sense in comparison to 76, but Nissan Patrol would be my choice if I want to pay that much money. If you are not locked on a certain brand, with that type of money you can get the top spec patrol. Its only major problem is its paint quality, but Toyota does not have the best paint quality either.

    13:00 With the same logic, if you buy a Prado or something similar you can do much more with the money you save! These prices do not make much sense (at least to me)!
    As an example, I recently purchased a very nice FJ Cruiser with less than half of this money (around 40k). It has low mileage and comes with the 4.0 litre 6 cylinder petrol engine, which will not blow cylinders like diesel ones and will probably outperform this GX LC300 because it comes with a rear diff locker as standard!
    Another example is to buy a top spec Patrol and enjoy it! I've seen it in action, and it's more capable than LC200.

    As someone who needs to cross a creek to get home, that low alternator & raised air intake is concerning to me. Why does Toyota even bother with a raised air intake and not go for an ARB style snorkel? I find that so many drivers with raised air intakes believe their 4x4 is kitted with something that will protect against water ingress.

      What was underwhelming about it? I bought my 200 new in 2010, 235K on the clock and she's still mint. I had the engine and transmission remapped a year ago, now getting 850Nm to the road and she will hold 6th at as low as 80 km/h. The 300 GX is appealing to me but I've not driven one, let alone actually seen one, so I'd like to hear you opinion of your experience with the 300 please.

      Mate I have also tweaked my 200 series, with a remap, larger PWR intercooler with thermo fans and a ROO systems exhaust. And it made the car so good, especially once a added a lock up torque converter.
      The issue I had was apart from the stock landcruiser looking knock kneed with the stock rims and tyres, I found the steering ultra light, to the point it was odd not been able to feel the front wheels, I found the 10 speed box to be hunting for gears and all the so called tech was annoying, and yes perhaps I could have spent time to turn all that crap off, ie lane management, it actually is quite violent and I had not expected it. And as for the new powerpant, I found that a yawn, and if I want a car to sound like an old EA falcon, cheaper to buy an ea falcon, i was quite disappointed as I wanted it to be better. Now I am sure you can't make any determination in one day. But I just thought I will now wait and watch the aftermarket guys make them proper, I hope this makes sense

    • @Cammo-vp1gl

      Thanks for the info Andrew. I've been discussing buying the GX with a mate who went to order a GR six months ago and was told the wait was two years ($152K) so he ordered a 76 ($76K) which still hasn't arrived, and in two years he'll buy a GR, sell the 76, probably make $$ on it and laugh all the way to the bank. The issue I have now is that 200s are pulling good dollars, I called my local Toyota dealer and he said the wait is about 6 months now for a GX as Toyota is really ramping up production. They only have the top spec models as demo cars and I can't physically get my hands on a demo GX. I'm seriously torn between keeping the old girl and selling her whilst it's still bringing good money on the used market. First world problem, I know!

    If Toyota put the 3.3l single turbo in Prado you won’t be selling many LC300. The payload is crap, roof loading crap, Toyota relying on after market to do there engineering again. Toyota you can do better, $90k, better cars out there with better options more capability (patrol). Over 2years Toyota have increased the 4x4 range 28%. Who else does that?
