    "New Wave" comes in different flavors: SynthPop, Post Punk, Rock, Ska, Blue-eyed Soul and even a little Reggae. This type of music was not played in "Pop" radio stations. "New Wave" was playing in "Alternative or Underwound" stations. Here in Los Angeles, KROQ 106.7 is where we listen to all this great music back in the day. The only reason that these amazing "New Wave" bands event got radio play, later in time, was due to MTV showing their videos. In Europe, "New Wave" is known as "New Romantic".

    Cool that you reacted to The Fixx.. an extremely talented band with deep intellectual lyrics, sonically layered textured sounds, with yes, kind of hypnotic and smooth rhythms with the new wave beats. Anyway, they were very popular for a few years, and have a lot of great songs.. "Stand or Fall" and "Red Skies at Night".. are excellent.

    The Fixx definitely had that New Wave sound. They were also a band that addressed a lot of our latent fears of nuclear annihilation. Gen X had a lot of that, underlying our "party" culture. Current generations never had to deal with this, not like we did. It explains a lot..

    I was in my teens moving to my twenties in the 80s. I graduated in the Class of 1984. Went dancing almost every night in the summers and once or twice a month at the Mormon Church dances. School Dances...and club for teens as well as skating. The Fixx was a great band. I loved everything they put out. This song has so many memories. Me and my first car...1966 Comet Caliente 4 door BEAST!! Making out with girls in the back seat...or drive in movies at Sunset Drive in. Good times I wish I could go back too. I didn't smoke weed till I was 19 but that is my discovery of Rush and Pink Floyd and really learned how good The Fixx really are as a band...the Guitarist is awesome, and the bass line is EPIC, and the writing is on point. But this was a great song to dance to as well.

    These 80s ' New Wave' Songs were introduced to us by the 'new' videos played on MTV on our televisions. If they were in popular rotation there then radio would chart them for play. The only other way we could listen to this new music was to go out to buy the record or cassette to play in our home and/ or our cars. Typical stoners did not care to ' chill' to new wave music back then. It was too new and disruptive to their ' chill vibe' Your ' I Don't know' tune at the end of your reactions really says it all about you guys lol

    • @jaynagerber7474
      @jaynagerber7474 Před 2 lety +5

      I concur. They really don't understand. In the 80s, Hair Metal was all about sex and alcohol/drugs, Pop (i.e., Michael Jackson, Madonna, Billy Ocean, etc., etc., etc.) generally had no deep meaning to their songs. Alternative music (including all of the sub-genres that included Modern and New Wave) tended to have deep, thought provoking ideas behind them (not always, but in general).

    • @TheOriginalFILIBUSTA
      @TheOriginalFILIBUSTA Před 2 lety +2

      @@jaynagerber7474 I mean, that's pretty much it. Humans with a need for more stimulation in the intelligence/emotion department will tend to like a broad spectrum of music, because most music genres embody just that. Pop and it's affiliates are just a couple of handfuls of genres. Think the history of the whole world. That's a lot of music to catch up on. When growing up in the 70s/80s young people had a wealth of choice. Things were plasticky and hollow from 1983-1987 inclusive. During that time, we didn't have much new stuff to satisfy us. But underground music was cool, if you knew the right people. I honestly like Rock, Jazz, Fusion, Prog, Metal, Hardcore, Western Classical, Alternative Dance, Ethnic Folk, Reggae and all the stuff spawning from Reggae, punk and most of the Black stuff and it just goes on and on. But I won't, because I know you get it. The proportion of listening time will depend on how much of that genre I like (not much for metal, considering the volume of stuff, I'm more proto/classic/thrash/skater, y'know, stuff with soul and a groove), or the mood I'm in during whatever cycle of life I'm going through. Bout sums it up, eh? Man, it really is Sunday morning, isn't it? Don't drink coffee and respond to comments.

      "New wave" was a very broad spectrum term. Much of it was just garage band stuff with guitars and drums, and no "synth", like The Alarm, Elvis Costello, The Replacements, The Knack, Blondie.

    • @ryanjacobson2508
      @ryanjacobson2508 Před rokem

      @@marcmarc1967 "Synth pop" was understood to be distinct from "New Wave" initially (in fact, punk and New Wave bands were initially regarded as cut from the same cloth). But in later decades anything with an "80's sound" that wasn't hair metal was called "synth pop", regardless of whether a synth was the dominant instrument or not.

    "Saved By Zero" has an outer-spacey vibe to it.
    "One Thing Leads To Another" is The Fixx's biggest hit and signature song. Also check out "Are We Ourselves?," which is short and to the point.
    "Red Skies" is another good one of theirs, but listen to the original 1983 version, NOT the re-recorded 1987 version, which the band themselves didn't even like, but the record label forced them to do.

    Psychedelic furs-another new wave band-Love My Way has a similar vibe-but the Fixx's One thing Leads to Another to me is their best.
    FYI-New Wave music just means another wave of British or European bands dominating the charts-it just happened to be the 80s instead of the 60s and most were synth bands.also most of the popularity of these bands were due to them being on MTV-in some cases their videos were more popular than the songs themselves. Ironically a lot of these bands like the Fixx are a bit faceless as not many people could tell you who were in these bands or what they looked like unless you stood out like Mike Score-lead singer for A Flock Of Seagulls or Colin Hay lead singer of Men At Work.

    80's New wave embodied a lot of feelings of isolation and romantic longing. Gen X felt it had been abandoned by the "Me" generation of Boomers, and they had to find their own way. Would the computer age bring us together or isolate us? With the atomic clock at 5 min. to midnight, is there any hope or point in finding love before the clock strikes zero and we are all disintegrated? Will we be saved by zero? The music is hopeful, but the lyrics are melancholy.

    New Wave music place heavy emphasis on synthesizers, often with all the music even drums being synthetic or electronic. Guitars were buried in the mix. The songs were short and often described as bouncy of rubbery. There was also a high emphasis on fashion and looks.

The pot heads (as they were then called} were not into new wave. They were the ones still listening to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin years after their heyday.

    I love Stand or Fall. I remember a rainy day at a laundry mat helping a girl and hearing this song on the speakers. It was new but I had heard it before. They were one of my favorite bands. They had Red Skies, One Thing Leads to Another, Are we ourselves, Deeper & Deeper, Secret Separation, Built for the Future, Driven Out

    This is very old! Song was about meditation. The Fixx was more chill and slower compared to most other new wave groups. Kinda like STP and Pearl Jam is chill slower band for grunge rock.
    In '90s hip hop , you have chill slower rappers like Pharcyde, De La Soul compared to others.

    Ah the 80s. Drive out to the beach firing one up along the way. Drive all the way down to the far end of the beach where nobody would be around to bother ya. Throw your beach towel, boombox and cooler on the sand. Hit the ocean and surf the waves until you're wore out. Get out of the water and crash on your beach towel. The boom box has double cassette so you can load two 120 minute cassettes. Now you have a cooler of alcohol and 4 hours of this type of music to listen to when you lay back on your beach towel and put an acid tab on your tongue.
    Yeah the world was a lot simpler back then........

    When The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits and other British bands came to America in the 1960s, that was called The British Invasion. When all of these new British bands started coming to America in the 1980s, that was called New Wave, as in the new wave of a British invasion.

    I saw them in 1983 with Flock of Seagulls. It was an amazing concert. During that time we had Ozzy, Iron Maiden touring almost yearly and also Loverboy, Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Motley Crue, The Scorpions, you name it, we got to see it all. Thanks for the great reaction videos 👍💯😎🔥🔥🔥🎸❤

    There's an interesting interview with Cy Curnin in which he explains the true inspiration and meaning behind the song. It was a reaction to him attending a speech by the Dalai Lama. "Saved by Zero" is a reference to clearing the mind and reaching that zero point of peace and tranquility. But Cy also mentioned that lots of people can interpret it lots of ways, which is great.

    All of these years later I learn what it means - "Lyrically, "Saved by Zero" is a reference to the Buddhist mantra Śūnyatā. ... It clears your head of all fears and panics and illusions and you get back to the basics, which is a Buddhist mantra..."
