  • Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Death. I've had a number of requests to feature more of Death's music after I featured the late-great Chuck Schuldiner in a Three-For-All lesson about two years ago during Metal Month, so I figured it was time to finally take a look at some of the pioneering/ legendary chord and rhythm work hiding in Death's music - so let's dive in!
The chord-based ideas found in this lesson revolve around the two-guitar interplay you'll find in Death's music. As I listened to Death's albums while putting this lesson together, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of dual guitars working together in a number of their songs, so I decided to feature that area of their music in this lesson. The songs targeted in this lesson include tracks such as 'The Philosopher,' 'Spiritual Healing,' 'Evil Dead,' 'Bite The Pain,' 'Killing Spree,' 'Empty Words,' and more!
Needless to say, if you're a Death or metal fan, or a player searching for some new chord-based ideas to play around with, not to mention plenty of examples of blending two guitar parts together - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

As one half of the guitar team with Chuck on Spiritual Healing, and the guy who wrote the melodic part of that Killing Spree intro, I approve of this lesson! And David, you are 100% correct... it was a finger exercise: I was playing it just to keep my fingers warm during a break from the S.H. writing sessions, and Chuck heard me playing it and asked me to keep going. Then he grabbed his guitar and came up with the underlying chords. And thus the intro to Killing Spree was born. Cheers @DavidBrewster

You are a legend too. You were on the Testament "The Gathering" album back in 1999. You got to play with Steve DiGiorgio and Dave Lombardo. Gene Hoglan is a legend too. Gene did some sick drumming on the "Symbolic" album! Chuck always had amazing technical drummers. Sean Reinert is another legend that worked with Chuck. Richard Christy was killer too. Christy was on the Howard Stern show. Back in the day, I used to listen to Death, Cynic, and Morbid Angel. Mid-90's I found Michael Romeo and Symphony X. They became my favorite band. Today... i'm into this all-female metal band from Japan called: LOVEBITES. Midori and Miyako are a killer dual-lead power-metal guitar team. Check out their live performances for "Break The Wall" and "Set The World On Fire". ( Videos are here on CZcams. )

Hi Dave it's amazing you show great appreciation of such a good and original music from Death and Chuck Schuldiner. I mean, that is for sure an extreme type of metal, but you are able to recognize the value.
It would also be interesting to see in a picture or video your collection of vinyls and CDs, I bet it is large and well preserved 😎👌🎸

My friend and I ran into Chuck in the parking lot of a thrash show in the early 90’s. It was either in Indianapolis or Cincinnati, I don’t remember. His band wasn’t playing. Anyway, he took the time to talk to us and answer a few questions. He was super cool and laid back. Very nice guy!

I saw Death play at the Omni in Oakland back around 86, 87, and our band was one of the openers for Possessed at Keisha's in Berkeley (what was originally Ruthie's, the owner liked to name his club after his current wife/GF). The gig with Possessed was insane because it was raining super hard for a couple of weeks and the beam right above the stage had been wrapped in heavy plastic sheeting, duct-taped to the ceiling and when we did sound check, it was already filled over 10 gallons of water. 🤣
Regardless, I'd say that was the most fun gig I ever played. Every time a drummer hit a snare or tom, the water shot up. They got drenched. The rest of us pushed our amps up to the front of the stage, and still got splashed with water from the soggy drum sets. 😱
Hey David, could you do an episode on my friend's band, _Defiance?_ They never got huge but are still playing gigs, sans my good friend Doug Harrington (R.I.P. Doug, we miss you! )

Chuck is one of my main guitar influences. I loved his phrasing and evil sounding leads. He was unique. I usually do not like growly vocals, but Chuck did it right. ( I prefer operatic power-metal vocals ) Most of those growly dudes, I can't understand a word they say. But I could hear Chucks lyrics clearly most of the time. His tone was pretty wicked too. He's famous for using those Marshall Valvestate 8100 amps.
