  • Hummocky cross stratification forms in fine sand under the influence of storm waves and currents. It is a distinctive sedimentary structures that (almost) always indicates deposition in a body of water influenced by a storm. In this video, I describe how it forms and what it looks like, with both sketches and example photos.
