  • There are so many things you CAN do it becomes almost intimidating on where to start sometimes. Back on our School of Permaculture facebook group we get asked lots of questions and one very common one is where or how to begin. Obviously I think the real first step is a permaculture design course, but this video will give you some really helpful starting tips.

    This is exactly what I needed. Just a quick basic video to start turning things over in my mind to see how I can apply these things to my garden. I think you have saved me hours of permaculture torture 😝 It doesn’t take long to get lost in the forest of it all! I was lost… but now I’m found! Thank you 😊

    On my smaller plot, I'm finding it essential that every component accomplish multiple tasks. For instance, my compost area will be in the chicken/rabbit enclosure. Let the animals do some of the work for me. My fruit trees will be on the south side of my greenhouse; shade/cooling the house in the summer, but letting light in in the winter.

    In support of soil improvement and tilts. Compost, castings (worms!!). Have contact for cow manure from a dairy farm nearby. A used wheelbarrow, large wagon, hauling - is an essential consideration tool for raiding the woods, moving materials. You may want to lay cardboard over planting beds even before the snow melts.

    Question for rain water harvesting do those containers need to be black or covered for some type of wooden structure to keep out the sunlight from growing algae? Would a simple recycled fence wood be a very simple and extremely low cost solution to basically build a box around the containers for sunlight protection?

    • @Skye_N
      @Skye_N Před 2 lety +1

      Geoff Lawton says algae are good. They ensure that the water remains pure. The only thing was to make sure that you leave in a tiny hole at the top. Try listening to people harvesting water esp in Australia. I think the title of the video was water harvesting lecture by Geoff Lawton

    I have a decent size yard w literally nothing but the entire yard is thick clay soil! (Ohio) I want to do the permaculture, and turn my whole back yard into something usable. At the same time I have 3 dogs that obviously use this space for their bathroom. Should I fence off an area for them? They are small dogs. It disappears into the soil pretty quickly

    Do you find difficulty dealing with city? That want you to have a manicured lawn . If just discovered this permaculture. And think it’s great but I don’t think any city around my area would let me have a native Prairie style yard full of grained grass and foods . I grow great dandelions and noone is happy about it

    Hey, speaking of compost, I made a video on composting on contour using swales, and am curious what you think of it if you were interested in checking it out. I also hit on a lot of stuff like production of methane which I think is vitally crucial for us to minimize.

    What is a hot compost?

    • @schoolofpermaculture
      @schoolofpermaculture  Před 2 lety

      A type of composting method where oxygen (by turning the pile) and moisture are added more often to ensure thermophillic microorganisms, which break down the organic matter faster, can thrive at around 150 to 160 degrees F.

      @DivaGlamSquad Před 4 lety +3

      Compost is organic matter. It also contains minerals. If you composted spinach and broccoli for example they would break down become organic matter and the minerals in them would become available for the new plants the compost is added to.
