  • I took a trip to the city of Tiraspol, located within the unrecognized territory of Transnistria, to see what this "Soviet Frozen Zone" was really like. I had never been there before, didn't know anybody there, and don't speak any Russian... yet, after reading about the place, I had to see it for myself. I'm proud to report that although it looks and feels like a vintage Soviet landscape... the city itself is charming and cozy. I had NO problems at all, and in fact, would love to go back and spend more time. This is a quick glimpse of some GoPro footage and photos I shot...with a hint of commentary. Consider this my debut into travel blogging...

Attila Pusztai thanks! And no, I didn't stay at the Tiraspol Hostel - I had hoped to, and actually emailed him asking how to reserve a room before I came - but it was just my luck that he had lost his phone and he never got my messages. Lol. Hence my comment about "arriving with no plans whatsoever" - 100% TRUE!! Without ever making contact with him, I went to Tiraspol anyway - I hopped off the minibus and wandered blindly into a place called Hotel Timoty, which I ended up taking a room at. Couldn't be happier with the hospitality of Tatiana and her staff. I DID get in touch with Tim later on in the night, and met up with him at a place called Seven Fridays where we kicked back, sipped local cognac and traded awesome travel stories!!
