Listened to this three times. One of the best anecdotes I’ve ever heard. Had a difficult time loading a land yacht of an old Pontiac by myself out in BFE today. Uncle I'm going through a bad depression and this video is a game changer. I needed this step by step. I wish I was younger because I don't have mental toughness. I am drowning in my sorrow. I don't lie, steal or do drugs/beer and I'm broken. Because I am disrespected and stay and take it. Kind of like when a woman stays with a partner that beats her. One would think "leave". I stay and suffer. Uncle your and other CZcams's videos help me escape/cope with what I'm going through. Thanks. I need u to keep doing and being who u are. A hero in eyes with your mind/spirt as your super power. Thank you.

Albert Castle Wish I could say something to help you out, but I feel it was all pretty well said in this video already. You ever need som more advice like this though I would recommend bill burr
I turn 40 next month and only just learning these lessons, but there's nothing you can do about time gone by, just have to start trying to do the right thing today. If you know you should leave your situation, then LEAVE IT. You don't want to wake up another ten years from now in the same fucking place with the knowledge that you knew and still did nothing. You might not even get another 10 years, you could be hit by a bus or get a cancer diagnosis or any number of things could happen, life is short, don't waste it like I have. And if you need to develop mental toughness, treat it like building muscle at the gym - start small and build up over time with consistency, you don't have to go straight from zero to hero in a week. And don't quit altogether if you come off the rails a bit - as long as you keep getting back on, that's the crucial thing.
I've painted cars and industrial stuff my entire life, Early on a boss told me, "your only as good as your last paint job" I made sure every paint job was perfect. The other one I heard was "anyone can paint, knowing what to do when shit goes wrong (and it will) makes a good painter".
As an Engineer, this last one is especially true. Anyone can use an online calculator and wikipedia to do 80% of my job, but when shit hits the fan (especially when "anyone" tried to do it), then you need me. I can paint a car no problem, but it will look like bird shit, that's wherein the difference lie!
I have question about the the first of the aphorisms you mentioned. What if you are an excellent car painter and one day, for some reason, you accidentally misreads the work order (or some such) and f*** up the job. Are you a f***ed up painter? or did you just f*** up? I'd suggest that we ALL do that. An excellent person licks his bruises, gets up, fixes the problem, and goes on.
God I wish I had this at 18. 35 now and I feel like I have barely reached base camp. Slacked my whole life. Complained. Moaned. Gave up. Made excuses. Took the easy path. I'm 24 now, just put $12k out of pocket into buying my first house (a project house) a day after my bday. 3 months into it now, lots of drywall, click lock, and a ton of stress later.. my house is nearly finished. I owe less than half of what its worth, and I have it mapped out to have it paid off before I'm 30. Can't be "depressed" when you're busy. A lot of people mistake bordem with "depression", and you broke down exactly why that is. I appreciate this video man, its going in my archive.

Bighorn44 None I had a college professor once tell me they we a horrible teacher. They knew how to play and could help with musicianship, but technique always came easy. They never had to work at it. Technique was hard for me, but I do struggle teaching some aspects of musicianship and audiation, those were easy for me. I’ve had to learn how to teach those things to my students. It’s easy to teach something that was hard to learn as you had to try every method until one worked. Uncle Bumblefuck mentioned that in the video.
Really amazing video! Along the same lines, this quote has stuck with me for many years and has helped in trying times: "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. Calvin Coolidge"

This video is succinct. You’ve vocalised and summerised my beliefs in a way that I couldn’t. I’m writing a life guide for my son, in very uncertain and scary times in Europe. Because I’m believe that his life will present more challenges than mine. Your words (although full of jest and mirth) are important and hold meaning. Truth truth truth! Preach! I was assessed at 13 years old as having a 2nd grade reading ability after never having attended school. At 18, I wasn't much better after being passed through school when my parents were reported to the county and I was forced to enter school, but I had goals and dreams. I reached the largest of milestones I could conceive of in 2012 when I received my B.S. in mechanical engineering. Life is nothing without goals and without impacting the ones around you. AvE, this is where I come from when I say, as I have said for years now in your comments, you make the world a better place. Thank you and never give in to the winter floss temptation my friend. I hope to meat you one day.

Man, the amount of wisdom contained within this video is just crazy. Long story short, I was that dude, living with mom, fuckin around and playing video games all day every day. I won't lie, it's definitely fun for a little while, but after about 5 years I was in fact about ready to off myself because I was indeed miserable. I had no money, no car, no job, no motivation, no goals, no aspirations, no hope for my own life. Once I figured out a lot of the stuff that is spoken about in this video, I was finally able to start pulling myself out of that hole. By no means is it easy, shit, I've been at it a couple years now and I'm still not fully out of that hole, but I have come a long way in a fairly short period of time. Nowadays I'm an apprentice mechanic, I have my own car, my own money, my own goals and dreams, and the motivation to work towards making them happen. If you're a young person struggling to find your way in this world like me, listen up and listen real good to what ol AvE has to say here. There's a pretty good chance it'll help you out a lot. Take it from me, a guy that's seen both sides of this particular coin.
You can't've seen many, because we get a liberal (small 'l') sprinkling of these kind of "advice from a common man to common men & Women' vids. Sometimes it's during a teardown, other times it could be a noteable news story (collapsing bridges, falling cranes etc) or just something occurs to Mr AvE during a vid. It's one of the reasons people keep coming back.
What's the vijeo with the learning curve / jack of all trades type discussion. I think it was the first one he did. Has it been removed or was it in another vij?
@@adamadamhoney It was a video where he was welding something, he used the same curve to explain the difference in knowledge that goes into stick welding versus mig welding
@@philgallagher1 This is good advice absent his usual blather. That is pretty unique. I watch for technical points but his gibberish gets in the way. People keep coming back for his un-PC monolog. If he cut it out, the vids would be 5 minutes long and nobody would watch them.

Felt bad for myself about it for a day or 2 thinking about having to retake that dreaded class and about the $$$$ I wasted because I didn't put in the work needed. Taking it as a lesson learned that I need to relearn academic discipline after having been in industry for a few years and out of the classroom bubble. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. You didn't have to, but you did.
You have just witnessed a video that depicts something known as wisdom. This is something that cannot be taught, it can only be learned. I'm at the far end of my working career, and Community College is your best friend. Take all the machinist classes offered, I never worked a single day as a machinist, but the knowledge gained was invaluable as a mechanic and later as an electrician. Do it now- college or vocational school is SO much easier to do at 20 versus 40. But if you're 40, still do it, you've still got time to change your life.
I start University to read Electrical Engineering Monday. Thank you AvE for helping me give my life meaning and helping me set my goals over the last 2 years.
I watched this when you first uploaded it, every now and then I go back and give it another watch because it's the kind of life advice you'll be hard-pressed to find. Fortunately, I'm still a young fella only 22, and this kind of thing is what makes me want to go out and get shit done rather than sit around playing games and painting Warhammer minis while wallowing in my own self-loathing.
Absolutely a great speech. All 7th graders should hear your message. I found your talk to be fresh and truthful. Kids need to hear this and a lot of adults also.
Well said. I was sitting on my parent's couch doing drugs when I was 25. No job, no ambitions. No Goals. I got cleaned up and started going to school and I'm now an engineer with my EIT. Never would have dreamed in a million years I would be where I am today if I hadn't started working and trying to improve a little every day.
Thank you for making me such a great father. All I had to do was send this video to my kids! Seriously, well said and we can only hope it sinks in to the younger group! Let's just hope they hear it from anothers voice
As 38 yr old I've heard a lot and also missed out a lot. I've always hung out and listened to the older crowd around me. But I'm still not savvy on certain things that we should have been taught in school or as young men. I also look at the people around me and wonder how they would ever survive a major catastrophe......
So glad I chose to go back and view those from before I subbed! Every point was golden and masterfully stated. Old man (who has learned many of these things the hard way) approved. 🏆 Thank You.
After my (unwanted) divorce I fell apart and ended up in weekly counseling sessions. AvE basically summed up 6 months worth of counseling in less than 20 minutes. The largest part being finding your goals (or in my case, new goals). Bravo.
Another comment asked: "Is there a way you could do a clean version so I could show it to my students?." I replied: IMO, NO! It would dilute the message. This talk is the shit sandwich they need to hear about life, and they might as well learn to get used to shit sandwiches early on.
You are spot on. Forced to retire, if I'm busy on a project, life is good. Without any project, I can't even get out of bed. I build stuff for friends out off stuff just laying around. Only costs me my time. Makes them happy a that keeps me content.

I had no money, no car, no job, no motivation, no goals, no aspirations, no hope for my own life.
