    These can definitely handle full sun. My mom and my grandma bot grew these alongside their houses for years in Nebraska, just letting them seed themselves down every fall and come back the next spring. I have a fond spot in my heart for them as a result but can’t provide them with enough light to grow them myself- they just need a LOT. I notice that a couple chicks in your pot seem to be etiolating a little, so you’re probably keeping them right on the edge of enough. I still love ‘‘em, though.

      It's funny how we all have certain plants that we think of fondly because of parents or grandparents that grew them. I definitely have a few myself, although some of them I still choose to avoid (looking at you Arucaria, shed those needles someplace else).
      These can handle full sun for sure, especially if they're kept outside for most or all of the year. I'm just a little more cautious when it comes to smaller plants, particularly where I live because it just gets so hot here. I have a fairly big Strelitzia that isn't doing well outside because of it, and those are plants that should really do quite well outside, being so big and tropical.
      I suppose good advice for keeping any plant outside is to keep a close eye on it and don't forget about it!

    Thanks Dylan!
    i believe i’m propagating ONE little “chick” that was given to me. It sure looks similar to the plant you presented;
    it’s only about an inch 1/2 high 😄. it’s grown about an inch since i planted it.

    Hi Dylan 👋
    Not much to add, other than to say hi.
    We always grew ours outside in the ground as perennials.

    I've had several of these and killed them all :V
    Which is a real shame because I think the way the crowns multiply sideways infinitely is wonderfully weird and adorable.

      I'm sorry. This particular one I ended up donating, just because I had too many succulents.

    Winter hardy all the way down to zone 3! I remember my grandma had a bunch of these in her garden and we would have been zone 3b then.

    Sempervivum like full sun (part shade for extreme heat). I had some rot this week with too much rain outside.

      It's been raining a lot here lately as well. The heat is the big issue with keeping plants out in full sun here. It just sucks the life out of them, so I try to be cautious.

    Hey Dylan, I've observed that you have those plants in a deep pot, is that just a choice or is the root system for those plants one that spreads heavily?

      They don't necessarily develop deep root systems like a tree would, but an average pot depth shouldn't affect their growth. When they get a little bigger, you can go with a more shallow pot, like an azalea pot, so that they can spread more. They just don't typically make those types of pots in such a small size.
