Thanks for posting this. I no longer listen to BBC London which 'used' to be cutting edge, but due to being taken over by the PC weasels, is now an anodyne, shallow, lifeless waste of an FM Radio frequency. Danny is a genius and the afternoon StarGarter Treehouse show was unique. Damn, I miss it.
I don't listen to the BBC nothing to do with perceived PC. For people who think that I go and say go and live on a remote island. Danny Baker was great, the BBC is just an establishment mouth piece.
I remember this particular episode. He was supremely pissed off! I relied on Danny, Amy and Baylen to get me through the afternoon. I so miss the scatter-gun humour and his clever use of the British language, he used to crack me up. Utter madness to get rid of this show. God bless ya Dan.
From the north. I used to drive down on business all around London and I'd schedule my last meeting so I could listen to Dan for as long as possible on my way home. Listening to the old shows again it's still incredible that those nogoodniks chose to cancel this everyday piece of gentle, engaging genius.
His afternoon show was the most entertaining, brilliant music, 2 hours of Radio (as long as you are over 35 you about to enjoy it )....eclectic, Leftfield, zany different, intelligent...Baker could be a little self indulgent at times and he was always Bound to annoying the middle class BBC managers.....but I miss the show a lot...thanks for the memories Dan
Danny Baker, a broadcasting masterclass. Sorry to hear your show has been canceled, however I will continue to tune in to your Radio 5 show each Saturday morning.
This was such a good show. I miss it so much. Can't someone pick up the baton with Danny and the gang? Great bit of ranting. Oh how I would love to have the opportunity to berate my ex employers on air. Great stuff.
"What a way to treat a recovering cancer patient!" Brilliant rant. If I'd known this was going to be his last show, I'd have taped it. He was supposed to do his shows until the end of the year (2012) but never bothered. Instead they bought in Mr Stand In Guy, Gary Crowley.
Agree mate , just finished reading his latest book , I've read his previous biogs too and I would really recommend them as they are incredibly funny and a wonderful journey into times less perplexing ,I fear lost forever..
Danny represents the last bastion of conversation and good common decency. Unscripted radio is a dying art and even in business now we're not allowed to talk to the customer and make them feel welcome.. what's worse than being replaced by a computer.. ? Turning into one!! :)
He wasn't sacked. He's playing games with listeners and the media. After he took 3 months off he knows exactly what has been negotiated between his agent and the BBC. Guardian quote: 'Discussions have been taking place with Danny Baker's management company for some time about him leaving his afternoon show on BBC London 94.9. This has included conversations about Danny presenting a weekly programme'..
So how did Danny do a complete show, slagging off his employers with every link, without anyone saying something to him or taking him off air?! Incredible.
They had only just let him know he was sacked. He strode straight into the radio show and carried on. They couldn't get the pen pushers to organise a meeting or room in time to stop him. Hilarious.
DB has been at the forefront of popular culture for 40 years (and even he admits that's by mistake - and he'd also say that he stopped being at the "forefront" maybe 15 years ago but hell...) we love you Dan, we love ya.
Danny Baker was flying kites to gain hysteria. All his contract deals are through his agent. He knew what's been discussed since the Summer. David Robey, managing editor, explained on Vanessa's show Copy/paste this: mixcloud.com/Folk/danny-baker-controversy/
Haven't listed to BBC London since they binned the show. DB was right, the management there forgot who actually listened and were more interested pushing their own political views....
You don't have to be without the show. Go to DBarchive on twitter where the show is available for downloading. It starts in late October 2005 and each month a new batch gets added so that currently you can listen through March of 2006. The timeless quality of the show makes re-listening a very fresh experience. Try it, please. I did, and I feel fantastic. All Hail DBarchive!
I agree with cancelling this show, cancel it, then broadcast as much danny baker on all national channels, be they radio or tv, so we can all enjoy his bakery goodness for as long as possible!
My dear old mum used to sit through "Fawlty Towers" & not even crack a smile, Dan seems to have a similar effect on people from, I would say, a similar position of genius. Without getting too pretentious & citing subjective attributes such as intelligence I don't get why people "don't get" Danny. He & his mate, DK, have kept me entertained & occasionally in raptures for the best part of 20 years from his first radio London shows. He is recognised professionally & that's a good thing!
Taken away by "those of have control"? Yep, always abide by the will of those "who have control", for they know all, and are not to be questioned. Especially when they shit-can the best radio show on the airwaves. BBC management.... they know best. Anyway, next up on BBC London... should benefit claimants be allowed to blah blah blah blah blah.....
As Danny said, the last "blank sheet of paper" in radio. A true genius, and BBC London's loss. Middle management fools. Radio 5 shows on a Sat Morning will suffice; can't wait to hear you back on another channel ripping up the rules.
This reminds me of the 2002 World Cup, which was not being covered by BBC London - almost the only station with a morning talk show that wasn't going on and on about the football... oh, wait. Danny Baker was unhappy that his breakfast show wasn't allowed to be covering the football and he spent the whole programme whingeing about it in a similar tone to this. I quite like a lot of his stuff but I think his on-air response to decisions he doesn't like is quite unprofessional - and hardly modest.
Given how out of place he was at the station and given how often he used to mock the station and gently rib the other presenters, I think we should be very grateful that he lasted so long!
Nice one Dan, you nicely sum up everything that is bad about the world today. Sad beancounters & faceless ultra-PC nitwits seem to rule everything now & they've managed to suck a lot of the fun out of everyday life. To your eternal credit Dan you must have given those "nitwits" a few migraines & sleepless nights over the years. In 100 years from now YOU will be the one with a multi-page entry on Wikipedia & they will all have just lived empty, tedious, nobody lives & be lost & forgotten forever.
I love Danny but he said the BBC cancelled his show. But he still works for Radio 5.This show was unique with great music and chat. The Radio 5 show is a sterilised version of this. The real Danny Baker was left as GLR
I still listen to him on 5Live. That should be 5Dead judging by their line-up; Campbell, Barnett, various box-ticking individuals, etc. But I listen to him on there because at the moment it is the only place to hear him. He should actually be on talkRADIO in place of the two pricks they have on there on weekend mornings who are off something called Gogglebox. Never seen it, don't want to listen to them as they are obviously talentless because they are off a reality show. i want to be entertained, for Christ's sake, and Danny Baker is one of the few people capable of entertaining me.
Danny has been and will always be a funny, no hilarious, finger-on-the-pulse, i'm really, no really! interested by what people do and say kinda guy. Yer! he's alright- i would love to knock him out of his perch like some of those negative axe to grind types but..he's bloody good. BBC has a long tradition of sacking anyone that has been any good. My final rant on this subject, so put it your pipe and...
Yeah, thank Christ he is gone! Now in the afternoon on LDN we get some decent programming like 2 bit actresses waxing unlyrically for hours on end as to why some part suites their version of method acting & dramatical presentation - Feckin great!
I quite like DB, but I think this is just sour grapes. So he was sacked. People get sacked! Did he think he had a job for life??? The BBC are employers - they're entitled to cancel programmes and sack people for financial reasons. Of course he is entitled to feel bad, but his sense of entitlement here is really awful. +Trevor Robertson Theres some daft tart on there in the afternoons now. Bloody rubbish.DANNY BAKER FOR RADIO 2! SACK STEVE WRIGHT!!
I don't listen to the BBC nothing to do with perceived PC. For people who think that I go and say go and live on a remote island. Danny Baker was great, the BBC is just an establishment mouth piece.

Love Danny Baker's stuff... always brought a smile to my face.
"There are many more meeting rooms than studios, and that should tell you all you need to know"
Danny is a legend...simple as....best radio ever.
yep
This was such a good show. I miss it so much. Can't someone pick up the baton with Danny and the gang? Great bit of ranting. Oh how I would love to have the opportunity to berate my ex employers on air. Great stuff.
Hans Decker Proper up to date Danny stuff?
"What a way to treat a recovering cancer patient!" Brilliant rant. If I'd known this was going to be his last show, I'd have taped it. He was supposed to do his shows until the end of the year (2012) but never bothered. Instead they bought in Mr Stand In Guy, Gary Crowley.
We need Danny back on the air
Agree mate , just finished reading his latest book , I've read his previous biogs too and I would really recommend them as they are incredibly funny and a wonderful journey into times less perplexing ,I fear lost forever..
Danny represents the last bastion of conversation and good common decency. Unscripted radio is a dying art and even in business now we're not allowed to talk to the customer and make them feel welcome.. what's worse than being replaced by a computer.. ? Turning into one!! :)
My understanding is that his agent had been in talks about the ending of his show for some time.
First it was Tommy Boyd and now Danny Baker. No room for free thinking lunatics in radio any more.
Hilarious.
none of the legion of ruperts and jemimahs there ever talked to him.
Another spectacular BBC own goal. He was the best thing on Five Live.
DB has been at the forefront of popular culture for 40 years (and even he admits that's by mistake - and he'd also say that he stopped being at the "forefront" maybe 15 years ago but hell...) we love you Dan, we love ya.
Ranting over Zappa ! You don’t get that anymore
Danny Baker and Baylin and Amy : great, long may you rant
if he felt his co-presenters werent being paid enough why didnt he just get a different job?
Or go into bat for them with management?
Magic. Back again for more of the old magic.
Danny Baker was flying kites to gain hysteria.
All his contract deals are through his agent.
He knew what's been discussed since the Summer.

If I ever tune into this show and someone else is on other than Danny Baker, then it's straight back to XFM.
F*ck, I miss Danny Baker, his wonderful team and this show!
The greatest of the great I was there every day to listen to this show It will never be forgotten. Bring him back
Would you say he'd been sacked from more stations than Kenny Everett was?

i miss his show
and his weak replacement is still there !!! must be very very cheap indeed !
neverbeen2 she can’t be as cheap as she should be unless she pays them. She is awful.
My dear old mum used to sit through "Fawlty Towers" & not even crack a smile, Dan seems to have a similar effect on people from, I would say, a similar position of genius.

i so miss the show
Well said Danny. I will miss you PM shows.

Shame on the bbc, always an original talent that deserved better. Whoever made the decision and couldn't be bothered to call him should rot.
Baker was very very good. He’s a bit of a berk nowadays
Danny Bakers decent and isn't arrogant he's worked hard for the BBC he made QI what it is now by scripting it, so I think he has the right to be angry
As Danny said, the last "blank sheet of paper" in radio. A true genius, and BBC London's loss. Middle management fools. Radio 5 shows on a Sat Morning will suffice; can't wait to hear you back on another channel ripping up the rules.
Danny, if you ever read this, think about setting up yr own channel?
What is the piece of music that starts at 2:44?
Peaches en regalia by Frank Zappa
It's not bad for 3 hours work but for of rates of pay in radio it's not very much. Especially not for a London station.
Shame you didn't put some of his other shows up.
This reminds me of the 2002 World Cup, which was not being covered by BBC London - almost the only station with a morning talk show that wasn't going on and on about the football... oh, wait. Known as 'padding' he certainly excels at the art of talking about himself.
I don't think I could it for £50 - give the guy a 10% raise = £55.
or no sauce at all
Given how out of place he was at the station and given how often he used to mock the station and gently rib the other presenters, I think we should be very grateful that he lasted so long!
Is it true he locked the studio door?

Maybe he could have moaned to the bosses about his co-host’s pay before they were sacked ?
ps not a pleasant man to work with
this is a joy to listen too - come on Danny come the revolution
I think you misunderstand the circumstances in which he was sacked and the reasons given for sacking him if this is your attitude!!
......or no sauce at all?
Spineless managers destroyed their best show, stopped listening to the station after this, as did many people.
If you work it out at an hourly rate £50 is probably quite good.
Is that £300 per day or week? Same goes for £50?
I still listen to him on 5Live. That should be 5Dead judging by their line-up; Campbell, Barnett, various box-ticking individuals, etc. But I listen to him on there because at the moment it is the only place to hear him. you can't blame him for being pissed off and upset, but this was very unprofessional... i felt especially bad for his co-host...
Danny has been and will always be a funny, no hilarious, finger-on-the-pulse, i'm really, no really! interested by what people do and say kinda guy. THAT WILL BE THE 200 UP
Penny pinchers win again. Lose another top bloke who says it as it is in favour of political norm. Sad days
Who has won no end of awards including a Sony!
Yeah, thank Christ he is gone!

And dogs.

AMERICA HAS HOWARD STERN
BRITAIN HAD DANNY BAKER
FOR SHAME, THE FINEST RADIO PRESENTER WE EVER PRODUCED.
Oh, and the bit about how his co-hosts have been underpaid for 10 years. If he cares so much about that, why hasn't he said anything about it before??
