  • OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY: This chicken coop was $50 and took only 1 hour to build. This is the most viewed chicken coop video on youtube. Thanks for watching and share it with your friends. This is a great coop for meat birds, turkeys or what ever type of bird or any animal you need housed.
This build is so easy even someone with zero skills could pull it off =)
we suggest having one on your homestead for a standby

I built this and it worked for about 2 months. The corners in the front pulled apart. I would use some metal corner braces or prebend the cattle panel so there isn't so much outward pressure. It's a good, cheap design otherwise.

Put a rack in the back for them to sleep on and put three milk crates in the back with small holes in the chicken wire for my wife to get the eggs. Put some old lawn mower wheels that are adjustable in each corner. And we roll it around the chickens love it and actually eat a lot of grass and bugs and very little feed.

Handy set up. We would have to use hardware cloth for the fencing though. It's the only stuff small enough to keep weasels from getting the chicks. They get through the smaller size chicken wire. I assume wiry little weasels with an appetite for noisy chicks aren't a problem in your area, unlike here in upstate NY. Of course they can't get the bodies out, so they kill, drag the bodies to one pile and leave them. That's their modus operandi.

I have found when using utility fencing this way, that a few large-headed nails placed strategically works to hold the panel edge in place, when you have to pull it hard to stretch it to hook over the heads. So, it's open in an instant, and closes just as quickly.

You could pin hardware cloth wire elevated a tiny bit at the bottom in some sort of way. A word of caution with this design is Chicken wire is not reliable against predators - we have lost chickens to raccoons trying to pull the chicken through the wire as they can grab them if the chickens/chicks are close to the edge. Use a smaller gapped wire instead if you can afford it.

I had to cover my coop with 1/2x1/2" rabbit cage wire to keep the raccoons from reaching in and grabbing birds. I stack concrete blocks around the outside to keep dogs from digging under.
If you have good fences, guard dogs and electric fences around your coop area you might get away with a chickentractor like this.
I made five raised beds out of the blocks side by side that the coop fits into. And I move the coop from bed to bed periodically.
I plant deer forageseed ahead of the chickens and people food behind them.
I may just plant chicken forage in the five beds this year and see how that rotation works out.

I couldn't find the video on my phone but you mentioned how to haul cattle panels in your truck without a trailer. I always needed some but I don't have a trailer. You suggested putting them in the bed of your truck and pushing about five panels forward in an arch to haul them. Great suggestion, thank you!

Ah, temporary housing for freezer camp! Love it! Getting straight run chicks and this way, we don't have to build a huge chicken coop with a huge run for the non laying birds.

And for good reason this is one of the most viewed chicken coop videos on You Tube. Meat birds are raised to market size in about seven to nine weeks. Working this like a tractor with about 15 birds one could realize @ 3-5lbs per bird about 45, 60 or 75 lbs of freezer stock. According to the last video I watched, some could be held back from cool school for some hen fruit production and maybe new stock the next spring with incubation beginning about April. With a metal shed I've had for a couple years and haven't assembled, It might have a purpose other than using the material for a roof over the porch. With the three chickens we already have (they identify as dogs) they could help alert to buzzards and such in the woods that surround this place. Sooner or later when you get an itch you will scratch. 🤔

Stacey Vega Markum lat on commenting, we built our hen house almost entirely out of scrap lumber. Once it was complete it looked kind of sad, but the following year we did an extension and then I painted it. Looks pretty good, but mainly it is completely secure from varmints!

I took 2 old window frames from a previous house. Used some wood and chicken wire and made a chicken run. Keeping a mother hen and her chicks in it currently and building a second one for another mother hen.

You could cut cost by using concrete reinforcing mesh. It would cost 30 cents on the dollar compared to cattle panels

ps-how do you keep a bear or larger animal from flipping over this coop? And did you ever have something dig under it?

You can lay chicken wire along the bottom or about 12 around the inside perimeter to keep things from digging in.
