  • Almost every kitchen in Baltimore, and maybe Maryland, has a tiny yellow, blue, and red tin of Old Bay seasoning. It is an essential part of local cuisine, especially this time of year! Yet, most people are unaware of the spice’s dramatic Jewish history. Old Bay was created by Gustav Brunn, a Jewish immigrant who came to Baltimore after escaping Nazi Germany. We hope you enjoy today’s episode on Gustav Brunn’s Old Bay Seasoning and we’ll see you soon with another Five Minute Histories video!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." We record short videos about different historic places all over Baltimore and post them on our Facebook page, CZcams channel, and website. All these B h videos should be shown on local TV as well. MPT would do well to air these one night a week for an hour.

Obrycki's used a very similar seasoning on their crabs called Harbor Spice.

I worked for McCormick Spice for a short time back in the 90's and found the culture a bit odd - extremely insular in nature, even byzantine at times. So hearing about their antisemitic behavior towards the creator of Old Bay back in the 40's isn't that surprising to me
