    I love old cartoons. Some of the creepiest shots (like the one with the long-legged guy dancing) from Betty Boop really freak me out though.

    • @muff9970
      @muff9970 Před 7 lety +26

      There's actually a reason that you find it creepy! That scene used an animation process known as rotoscoping, which allows for cartoon characters to move just as fluidly as humans do. You perceive it as creepy because the exaggerated figure of Koko the Clown (the long legged ghost) in that scene shouldn't be able to move that way according to your mind. It's in the uncanny valley! :)

      so what? traditional animation is not always good, you know. in my case, anything that was not animated by mgm, wb, or disney during the 60s-90s were the shitty turning point in traditional animation. when a character around those decades was animated to talk, the whole head would always, un-naturally and incorrectly, move from top to bottom, and side to side of its position, giving the illusion that head isn't even connected to the body at all, and what makes it worse is that the eyes of a character would always stay in place when the rest of the head moves out of position by mere nanometers. and the motion of individual body parts of a character's body was not better at all. when a character moves an arm or a leg, the part would look like it's the only thing that's normally in motion, while the rest of the body is stiff and lifeless, as if anything of the character's body that isn't animated feels likes it's nothing but background. but hey, these are only my problems with traditional animation. and this is coming from a young artist himself.

    You've got to admire the raw skill they had. But to say that cartoonists these days DON'T have raw skill is false. They just work in different ways, but both then and now a cartoonist needs to have a wide breadth of understanding and coordination.

    • @ptjr6548

      Akira, Ghost in the Shell (cliche, I know)
      Ralph Bakshi stuff (Fire and Ice, C___skin)

      DarkAngelEU My comment was not really a critique on the content of animation and what animation says about us, but the technical craftsmanship behind it. I don't necessarily disagree with your comment, but it was a bit of a non-sequitur.

    • @chromo48
      @chromo48 Před 9 lety

      ***** I'm familiar with everything you listed aside from the last item -- That is something I have not seen. I'm a big fan of TOOL and have seen Akira many times.
      I personally love Genndy Tartakovsky's stuff. Samurai Jack, Clone Wars, Dexter's Lab. Samurai Jack has always been a favorite of mine. It's violent and the cinematography and illustration style are gorgeous.
      I'm sure you've seen Ren & Stimpy, but check out the work of that show's creator, John Kricfalusi. He was sort of my link to the older cartoons. He has a great respect for animation and is incredibly talented himself.

    • @DarkAngelEU

      chromo48 it's the same right there, no longer an age of machines rather than an age of virtuality. Digital animation perfectly fits that sense of time.

    This video is just perfect!
    You did such a good job picking out what clips to use from different studios and different time periods in animation's Early Period. Not only that, you did an excellent job of matching the movement of each clip with the tempo of the song.
    It's clear you put some thought into this and it shows.

    Lots of these are Fleischer cartoons. Fleischer was around before Disney and eventually competed with him. Disney was better at marketing, knew people in Hollywood and Fleischer's cartoons were censored. Disney copied a lot of what Fleischer did and then attempted to erase Fleischer from memory, wanting to be THE cartoonist. Considering few people know of Fleischer, I'd say he succeeded.

    • @alicefarrier3560
      @alicefarrier3560 Před 6 lety +1

      TheConnorian i was introduced to fleischer animation by a show on cartoon network called late night black and white. They used to show old fleischer and warner brothers cartoons mostly on it. The superman cartoons fleischer did were a influence on the 90s animated superman so fleischer has not been completely forgotten. One of the creators of the nineties superman even admitted it in a interview. Plus betty boop and koko were featured in who framed Roger rabbit. Koko is actually shown twice in the film.

I didn't know the joke until years later. Now-a-days they just cram the adult jokes without any creativity.
