The authors talked about her seismic sense quite a bit, she can feel earth around her. Remember in the arena episode where she catches two boulders with her hands, that's the best example you can find. It would stand to reason that she could feel the metal in the airships or on appas saddle, but coudln't detect aang because he doesn't wear earth or metal, and his vibrations were being masked by the hundreds of attendees in the crowd making their own vibrations with their own movements.
