      I regularly see the same trains with the Indian locomotive's on the way to Norfolk. The usually sit in the Lynchburg, Vs. yard for several days on a weekend. The head out Monday morning very early. They are gorgeous loco's!

    Nice catch of 10 new GE export locomotives at an iconic location! Reminds me of the time when NS shipped class 70s for the UK!

    The Indian standard gauge is the broad 5 feet 6 inch and policy is to convert the other gauge tracks to that eventually except for some intra-city passenger and a couple of narrow gauge steam tourist lines. The locomotives going to them aren't be able to be driven over our tracks to the port and have to go on wagons.

    • @RohanBarros
      @RohanBarros Před 6 lety +9

      Lewis Doherty these locomotive had standard guage trucks while being tested and we're later switched to broad guage for export

      Yeah, that makes sense.

    • @iseeyou1624

      Lewis Doherty so what's better the gauge we have in India or the one's you have in the US? What's the difference?

    • @lewisdoherty7621
      @lewisdoherty7621 Před 6 lety +12

      I like the larger Indian gauge, since it is possible to have higher and wider loads with stability. On the other side of the argument are the higher costs and the larger curve radii needed for the larger gauge. Of course once there is one gauge in geographically connected areas, it is hard to switch over to a larger one unless there is a mixed gauge system as in India or Australia where whenever there is an opportunity to replace a narrow gauge, it occurs.

      @SPDRailfan Před 6 lety +2

      Lewis Doherty in India , trains runs on broad gauge . 5ft 6inch.

    I think around 40 will be exported. Rest will be manufactured in India. Total 1k locomotives will be built, 300 having 6000hp and 700 having 4500hp

    Nice! I’ll tell you even more information about this train. They left the Erie GE Plant on a local pulled by the New York Central Heritage Unit, which took them to Conneaut Ohio. Then, they took 15M to Conway and then ended up on this train.

      Norfolk Southern, likely a Dash 9, 4,440 hp. Something going by on the NS tracks that I can hear 1/2 mile from me as I type, headed north as no horn yet. Probably same engine(s) with a bunch of double stacks or mixed freight. Their rebuild shops at Juniata PA are legend, they do it all.

      I think most folks over here don't really care about railroads that much, it's all cars and air travel. Thank you for your nice intro vids to the Shimla-Kalka narrow gauge, I particularly liked the multi-arch bridge views. I work in IT with many folks from Asia and more than a few miss home a lot.

    • @steveonthefarm8671
      @steveonthefarm8671 Před 6 lety

      Here's a better view of same or similar train, a few dozen more to be exported then production moves to Bihar India. They may not be same gauge as US tracks so maybe that is why they are carried.

      Scrumptious Model Trains
      Not really, bc the company that made them is based in the US, so they made them where they're based and then sold them, which required them to go to India.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline Před 6 lety

      That's not what companies usually do these days, they usually manufacture them in or near the country of destination. And that still doesn't change the irony that the u.s. is making locomotives that they will never use.

    • @SignalBox
      @SignalBox Před 6 lety +1

      Erm, exporting is more prevalent now than ever before. Don't see any irony in this, it's business.

    • @sgt.eclair
      @sgt.eclair Před 6 lety

      Scrumptious Model Trains
      Actually, it is. They produce their product where they have factories/workshops/whatever and then ship them to the customer. That's how business has always worked and the way it still works. There is no irony in that, because they have no affiliation with the government of the US.
