    I can't believe how rude the midwife was to you! It was your first child, therefore you have never been in that much pain before. She should have treated you with respect and tried to calm you down by reassuring you not being ignorant! It makes me worry that a lot of these doctors/ midwives are in the job for wrong reasons!! (money)! Anyway congratulations! Your son is sooo adorable!

      @ChloeBabes13 Před 10 lety

      Really? wow! If she isn't in it for the money she must enjoy doing what she's doing and she should know how to treat others with respect and to meet their needs. It's sickening that she didn't treat you in a caring manor Kate :(

      I think they just see births so many times and have such knowledge on it that they become desensitized and forget that it IS the worst pain to YOU from the beginning and that in your eyes its the fear of the unknown too

      I qualified as a midwife. They aren't in it for the money - they are in it because they want to help women. However, due to many job pressures (lack of funding in the NHS, ward politics, stress) on top of issues everyone goes through (stress in other life areas/illness/family etc) everyone has bad days. Plus, many older midwives were trained in a different, less woman-centred way a few decades ago.

    Although I am not pregnant your video was very helpful and honest. Everyone just keeps telling me horror stories about Labour and it just terrified me and puts me off, as I am a massive whimp and have NO pain threshold! I love seeing videos about little Archie, lifestyle and beauty/fashion videos. Love A x

      I hate that people want to scare you when you're pregnant, it's the worst thing ever. I tried to be honest in this video as there's no point in me saying it was like going on holiday! Haha but it really wasn't that bad and I think i've probably got a low pain threshold too! x

      @melba Newman Don't worry too much. The pain is only there when you're having a contraction. Once your baby us in your arms you'll forget about the pain. It may not seem like it at the time but you'll be fine. If you have time don't be afraid to ask for some pain relief do you can get some rest. Good luck xx

    This is probably the best labor and delivery story I've ever heard. You coming into the hospital at 9 cm dilated, having no pain medicine and still say that it's possible to do. I'm due in June so I've been searching videos like this on CZcams and I'm glad I found yours. Thank you for encouragement! :)

    Very heartbreaking that you got such a midwife! I love how you managed to see past it and focus on your beautiful baby; and your kind words of encouragement are wonderful and much appreciated. I have wondered about the kind of pain as well. I think this was very valuable to talk about, because hardly anyone I know wants to talk openly about their labour story which makes it a scary topic altogether.

    Ever since watching a video in sex education many years ago. The thought of even just becoming pregnant and then having to give birth has petrified me. I'm now 25 and some of my friends have children. This video has made me realise that everyone is different and has settled my mind a bit about having children in the future. I have really enjoyed watching your journey from the very beginning and now to see you with a little family is just lovely. Thank you for your honesty in your videos and I hope you continue to do them xxx

    let me just say Kate,because they turned you away at the hospital and you were on your feet and gravity was in your favor you were much further along on arrival at the hospital. Well done for enduring. I had four natural births, 2 at home and learned that when you are new to it, you just want to get to the hospital and you don't realise that it's going to get much more intense. Much of the time you arrive and are 4 or 5 cm and they lay you down and you want medicine and everything slows down after that. I know it's different for all, but you did amazing!!

    hi Kate. I'm 35 weeks pregnant and am SO scared about the upcoming labour. I had an appt with a midwife today who told me there's a 30% chance I won't get an epidural because the hospital might be busy that day. This has really messed me up. I've avoided all labour videos but for some reason I clicked on yours. You've made me feel much better so I just wanted to send you a big thank you for that.

    God i could relate to your story so much! My baby girl is 5 weeks old and I do not forget the birth at all! My midwife was horrid, I went into the hospital for sickness like yourself a week before I gave birth and she was horrid and just didn't know why I came. When she came in the room to deliver my baby I could of screamed GET OUT! ( I know its horrid to say ) anyway, she refused to check me as I was only 2cm a couple of hours before, and refused to give me any pain relief ( including gas and air ) the pain was unbearable, and finally when she checked me after having a breakdown and trying everything I was 9cm and ready to push! I pushed like there was no tomorrow! And she was born half a hour later!

    Sounds like you were actually quite good with the pain considering you thought it wasnt late stages of labour! I am applying to do midwifery at uni and what you said about the midwife you saw made me angry. A midwife should have sympathy and understand that you were in a lot of pain, perhaps she'd had a bad day but that was no excuse, you should have felt supported by the midwives during all stages of your labour. Archie is absolutely gorgeous and you should be so proud :)

Waters breaking and being told to go home then Being 9 - 10 cm and still in the waiting room as they was convinced I was in 'early labour' I had to shout and demand a room and if I didn't get one in the end I would of had that baby in the waiting room full of other pregnant women. I'm due this Friday and I'm a bit scared since it's my first and haven't got so far any good experience with the hospital or the surgery ... all so busy and cold, some even with an aggressive attitude, not caring at all. You were lucky you manage to dilate up to 9 cm. One of my friends managed only 4cm and they had to use the ventouse and it wasn't pretty at all - no painkillers, no nothing and also they had to do a surgical cut down there. This is another fear I have among others.... You sound like a great storyteller :) Keep it up! Maybe one day you could write a book ;)

    Thanks so much for sharing your experience Kate. Like Melba I'm just a few weeks away from my due date and this has made me feel slightly less anxious about things. I've prepared myself for the worst of the worst I think so hopefully it will be a little less scary than I'm expecting!

    I love this video so much. I've got a 4 year old and an 11 month old and I loved giving birth, might sound weird but they are such lovely memories to look back on. I just remember thinking, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, or some people liked scare me into thinking it would be! I'm lucky that both times my midwives were lovely and the whole experience was a good one! Congratulations to you and Ricky. Enjoy every minute! Xx

    Although I'm not pregnant this would of helped a lot of people as on some videos they say how awful it was and on this video you put it how it was and it's always best to be honest with everyone this surely has made me less scared hehe :) p.s your birth story was amazing ;)

    You were 9cm's and she told you it was too late to even have gas and air or any painkillers? Is anyone else a midwife is this right?! Surely you should be allowed no matter how many cm's or how late it is! You sound like you did amazing! Congratulations x

    • @KateMurnane
      @KateMurnane  Před 10 lety +4

      I don't think pain killers would have kicked in before he was born but not sure about the gas and air? He was born within an hour so it wasn't too bad, I was more scared of having gas and air to be honest haha! x

      @stineegeberg7858 Před 10 lety +1

      No, I also arrived at 9cm dilated and was put straight on a bed like Kate, begged them for pain relief and both midwives said no sorry we need you alert now as your baby will be born within the next 10-20 minutes so no pain reliefs or gas & air.
      So I had to just push him out exactly the same as Kate, with nothing but my own strength.

      Gas and air has instant effect - but maybe it wasn't available in that room as it wasn't a delivery suite? I don't know. My sister-in-law had her baby in an exam room after being in hospital 20 mins and was still given injected painkillers, but I guess different hospitals have different procedures. The main thing is that Kate and Archie are safe and sound - so happy for the three of you!

    • @clairreads1965
      @clairreads1965 Před 9 lety +1

      Pethidine wouldn't kick in in time BEFORE birth, but would kick in after, making the mother and baby sleepy, and increasing any risks/ chances of poor bonding.
      Epidural takes 30 min from set up to actual pain relief, so 9 cm is definitely too late.
      Gas and Air (Entonox) would be instant, but it's a much milder pain relief so to be honest wouldn't have much actual effect at this point - it would have just distracted her!

    Wow, that midwife didn't sound too pleasant. As a healthcare student I can tell you that she did not mean it personally, you almost have to turn your emotions off to protect yourself, and if you weren't so far along in labour you could have definitely have asked for another midwife. So happy for you, congratulations xx

    Well done Kate!
    Considering it was your first time and what you had to go through. The way you were treated by that nurse is just not fair! That nurse deals with births everyday but for you of course you're not going to know what to going to feel and experience and people should be considerate of that! I know I wouldn't know how to cope!
    Rant aside, well done! you made it all look so effortless in your vlog! x

    Hi Kate, I gave birth to my gorgeous little boy 4 weeks ago today. My labour was a little similar to yours. I was due the 26th September and went over by 2 days. My waters went at 4.20am that Sunday morning and my contractions started at 6am. My hospital told me to come up at 10am to be checked over. Unfortunately there wasn't a bed/room available until 11am. While waiting I was having a lot of pressure like I needed to poo as well. When they took me took me to the room the midwife examined me and told me I was 8cms. My baby boy then arrived at 12.45 weighing 7lb8oz. Like you said I expected atlot worse than it actually was. And going off his birth I would have another if it was the same lol. Xxx

    I loved this video (Just stumbled across your channel this evening, and loving it), and congratulations on your beautiful baby! Its so interesting hearing this from your side of the story- I'm a final year student midwife in London, so its really sad to hear you didnt get the kind of midwife you had hoped for, maybe she was having a bad week.. (not really an excuse).
    Although it must have been annoying being turned away from the hospital, women do so much better labouring at home, and you got to 9cm by yourself! thats amazing! anyway, congratulations and Im really looking forward to watching you're future videos! xx

    Thanks for doing this video. I am 19 weeks and have been very nervous for weeks about the birth and this has helped me. I might watch this video again when I'm 30-something weeks :) midwives can be so horrible :( my community midwife isn't the nicest but at my 16 weeks appointment she was on holiday and I had the nicest midwife from the neighbouring area and I wish I had her!! I love all your baby related videos keep them up :)

    Archie is amazing, and so are you Kate, sounds like you did an amazing job! However that midwife has really got me angry! I am actually studying to be a midwife and the LAST thing we are supposed to do is supposed to do is tell you your feelings and opinions are invalid. That woman really needs to re-evaluate her career! Midwifery is a demanding and hard job and i guess sometimes that gets the worst out of people. But in a career where your job is to support and nurture mother and baby, there is no room for judgement and malice! And i just don't understand why she assumed you were in early labor before she even checked you!! I really am so upset by the ignorance, especially since i work with such amazing midwives every day. Hopefully babies in the future will be delivered by a different midwife!! It seems to me like you would really benefit from a homebirth or a birthing center birth (if they have birthing centers in the UK), they are much less stressful than being in a hospital, and if you are doing a homebirth you really can just stay at home and have the equipment and midwives come to you!! Best of luck, thanks for finding time to post these kinds of videos, i love them!!

      Yeah I qualified as a midwife - the midwife in this story did not go about her job in the right way. Luckily, most midwives I worked with were better than that. It's the womans experience, not the midwifes.
