  • In this video, I will be testing different brands of paint for wood signs! I did the exact same amount of paint, and methods for each sign. Which brand do you think will win? The results surprised me. I definitely think after this video I will be switching things up a little bit. Have you ever struggled with paint bleeding, chipping, or peeling? It may be because of your paint brand or method. Hope you guys enjoy this video! Make sure to subscribe for more videos like this!

Hi beautiful Sallie. I think that the easiest way is to first cote the stencil with clear water base spray and then spray again with your favorite water base color spray. Using water base dry faster and doesn’t have toxic fumes. You can leave natural wood or stained as a base. Give it a try. Good luck.

I use waverly chalk paint but I always add a little water to thin it out. I never use the white waverly chalk paint for the background of the sign because I always had issues with it. I use KILZ chalk paint for my background.

I use the apple barrel all the time on my signs and I never have it pull up but I also pull the vinyl up while it is still wet so maybe that is the difference.

I had horrible results with the Apple Barrel paint too. I had whole letters peeling off! I personally love waverly so far! I’ve been using a makeup sponge to dab on my paint and it’s amazing and way cheap, for a pack of like 30 I think it was only like $2 or so.

Great video!! I am going to try spray paint now, I have been having horrible luck with my paint peeling up with my stencil and have tried countless brands of acrylic and chalk paints, tried with ModPodge and without (Sometimes worse with!) it’s been so frustrating. Thank you for sharing your tips I am so happy I found you! Couple questions.. Have you tried the chalk spray paint? Also any tips on how you avoid background paint color peeling up with your vinyl? I am even having this happen with stain. Not sure if it’s my wood but I always sand and apply a coat of polycrylic over my stain and let dry for a day or so and still seeing splintering. I use Oracle 631 and a knockoff on Amazon for 813 but it’s called Vivid Vinyl Stencil Mask. Thank you again and great job, new subscriber! 😁

Thank you so much! This very well may be the brand of the stencil. I swear by oramask! I have found with my methods, the paint/stain should not pull up as long as you use the valspar 2000 as your base coat, or your stain, and allow to dry long enough. Hope this helps some! 😊
