  • Power of self help by zen master.
In a tranquil Zen monastery nestled deep within the mountains, there lived a young monk named Akio. Though surrounded by the serenity of the monastery, Akio often felt helpless when faced with challenges. One day, he approached the wise Zen Master Takumi seeking guidance.
"Master Takumi," Akio began, bowing deeply, "I often feel overwhelmed and unable to help myself. How can I learn the power of self-help?"
Master Takumi smiled gently and said, "Come with me, Akio."
They walked to a secluded part of the garden where a large boulder sat. Master Takumi pointed to the boulder and said, "I want you to move this boulder."
Akio looked at the boulder, doubting his ability to move it, but he tried anyway. He pushed, pulled, and strained with all his might, but the boulder wouldn't budge. Exhausted, he turned to Master Takumi. "I can't move it, Master. It's too heavy."
Master Takumi nodded. "Indeed, some challenges seem insurmountable. But did you try every method?"
Puzzled, Akio shook his head. "What other methods are there?"
"Come back tomorrow with a different approach," the master suggested.
The next day, Akio returned with a sturdy wooden lever he had crafted. Using the lever, he was able to shift the boulder slightly. Master Takumi watched with approval. "This is your first lesson: use the tools and knowledge at your disposal. Self-help often begins with resourcefulness and innovation."
Days passed, and Master Takumi took Akio to a quiet pond. He handed Akio a bucket with a hole in it. "Fetch water from the pond," he instructed.
Akio quickly realized the water leaked out before he could reach the other side. Frustrated, he patched the hole with a small piece of cloth he found nearby. This time, he managed to fill the bucket and bring water to Master Takumi.
"This is your second lesson: adapt to your circumstances. Self-help requires finding solutions even in difficult situations," Master Takumi explained.
One evening, Master Takumi led Akio to a dense forest. "Tonight, you will find your way back to the monastery on your own. Trust in your abilities."
Akio hesitated but then ventured into the forest. He relied on his memory of the path, the sound of the stream, and the position of the stars. Though it was challenging, he eventually found his way back.
"You see, Akio," Master Takumi said as Akio returned, "this is your third lesson: trust yourself. You have more inner strength and wisdom than you realize. Self-help is about believing in your own capabilities."
Weeks turned into months, and Akio applied these lessons in his daily life. He became more resourceful, adapted to new challenges with ease, and grew to trust in his own abilities. He felt empowered and self-reliant.
One day, as the sun set over the mountains, Akio approached Master Takumi. "Thank you, Master, for teaching me the power of self-help."
Master Takumi smiled, his eyes filled with warmth. "Remember, Akio, the true power of self-help lies within you. Be resourceful, adapt to challenges, and always trust in your abilities. By doing so, you will find strength and independence."
And so, Akio continued his journey, embodying the principles he had learned. His life became a testament to the power of self-help, showing that with resourcefulness, adaptability, and self-trust, one can overcome any challenge and achieve true inner strength and independence, enriching both their own life and the lives of those around them.
