  • @Mishn0

Here's a couple of tips on removing fragile parts from sprues:
    1. Razor saw.
    2. Using a clipper causes the plastic to push apart at the cutting edge as they squeeze through due to their wedge shape. Just as a wedge can exert a large force on a log when splitting, the wedge effect of the cutter edges puts a lot of force on the part. If the part is connected to the sprue on both ends, cutting one of the sprue gates will compress the part against the other which can break fragile parts. Sometimes you can get around that by first cutting the runner somewhere away from the actual part so the stress doesn't go into the part. Choose spots that will allow the part's sprue gates to be cut without causing pressure on the part. Sometimes all it takes is some thought on which sprue gate to cut first.

    • @ieatoutoften872
      @ieatoutoften872 Před 3 lety +1

MishnO. I find your comment to be helpful. I broke the pilot's control stick on three 1/72 scale kits of WWII airplanes. In each case the piece was attached on each end, and the piece was in tension like a guitar string that had been tightened. In other words, there was a gate on each end of the stick, and a runner to each
gate. Until I read your comment, I could not comprehend how I was breaking the (Airfix A6M2b starter kit with paint and cement) piece in the middle of the piece when I pinched / cut the runner on one side with sprue cutters.
I did not realize that in so doing (the pinching action) was compressing the runner, and that the force was being transferred linearly from the runner to the gate to the piece. I just thought the piece was unusably brittle, especially when I did it again to another 1/72 scale Airfix A6M2b (paint and cement not included). I was stunned when I did the same thing to the kit of a different plane (Wildcat) made by a different manufacturer (Academy).
I will take a closer look at the angle of the pinching / cutting ends of my sprue cutters. I am wondering if using "flush cutters" will solve my problem. One test is worth a thousand theories. I will take your advice and cut a good distance away (on runners at a 90 degree angle or the outer sprue frame) from the fragile piece to reduce tension on each end of the sprue piece, before I attempt to cut the runner within a 3/8 inch of the gate on each end of the piece.

Favorite, and absolute best, model of the year has got to be the 1/48 Tamiya Vought F4U-1A Corsair, which I did up in the Big Hog choice of colors/decals.
Got it for Christmas 2019; I assembled most of it by January, then it wound up in a box all year until the beginning of December when I finally got time to dive back into it. (Had a 1 y/o grow up real fast this year, took a lot of my modelling time away haha!)

My first kit build was an Airfix Typhoon, but in 1964.
My father disapproved of the expense for something that did not fly.
The dilemma of what to do with it when finished other than collecting dust also arose.
Two years later my Dad gave me another kit which has approved of. A 1/24 scale Revell AC Shelby Cobra which was a fast slot car. Taught me a fair bit mechanically, electrically and competitively. Won a few races at local commercial slot car raceways during the slot racing boom years. Still have it. Body battered but mechanically still good.

My favorite kit i build in 2020 was the Revell Bf110 in 1/32 scale. This kit is a rebox from the 2008 Dragon kit but it only costs less then half of it, i scored mine for just over 50€:) You get the same plastic as in the Dragon kit but it comes without the little photo etch fret. The Decals (Cartograph, Italy) are better than the ones in the Dragon kit imho, very thin and nice finish. The Cockpit is so well detailed it could be a model in itself! The instrument panel is really crisp, has beautifully raised details and comes with a nice fitting decal. The panel lines are just right and the landing gear also is superb! The canopy is crystal clear and fairly thin. I upgraded it with some HGW seatbelts and photo etch buckles. If you like this plane and have some space for a bigger model you should definitely look out for this kit:)

That Revell Lanc is indeed a great kit but it has one major flaw. It lacks dihedral on the wings. The fix is fairly simple however. Assemble the wings but before you attach the engines use a razor saw to cut horizontally through from the top in the join just outboard of the inner engines from the TOP of the Wing. Go almost through the entire wing only leaving a small part on the lower wing attached. At about mid wing. Then just glue the wing back. That should give near enough the correct dihedral. DON'T use a hacksaw though as the blade is too wide.
Incidentally the Lanc you modeled "Grogs the shot" went down the production line at AVRO Yeadon where My Grandma worked on the Lancaster assembly line.

Soft plastic that figures are molded with is much like vinyl if it is not vinyl. It needs acrylic primer then other paints will go on better. However the soft material will still bend & crack paint so they are fragile. Good job though. The Lancaster looks great. I am left curious of the Humbrol issues.

I also did the same ME109 that you feature here, in the same colour and decal scheme. A lovely little kit. Now, if only our government would allow import of models, I would be doing the 1/24 Hellcat.

@@ModelMinutes Thanks for the reply! Modelling in South Africa is a bit pricey, eg the Typhoon cost me 2500 in 2018, the Hellcat would be about 3 grand.
