Living in Washington, US I can only dream of visiting the Southern Ukulele Store. The best we have are large guitar stores with a few ukuleles as an afterthought. England having a dedicated ukulele store is a true blessing, and if you live in the UK please cherish it.
If you're in WA state, there's a decent selection at Dusty Strings in the Seattle area!
We do. We in the UK have not just one but three or four dedicated ukulele stores. We are very blessed.
Ha, I was hoping the "Southern Ukulele Store" meant Georgia, Florida, etc, but I guess it's UK. Pretty neat though!
You never bore us with your videos or the ukes you share.
Alex, you crack me up...love your humour sprinkled throughout your videos. :) Thanks for this, great info and exposure to baritones.
Thank you. I think it shows sometimes in the best way that I don't prepare for a lot of these videos, I rely on my product knowledge... even when its crap 😆
Soulful... such an adequate word !
Excellent video. Thanks.
Really nice to see a variety of baritones at a range of price points. Not so long ago it feels like it was hard to find baritones that weren’t cheap laminates or super high end. The high end instruments at the end of the video are super gorgeous, but there’s now good stuff and temptation in the middle.
Not Bored at all - Keep them coming!
10 different baritones in one store!!!! SUS rocks! How I wish SUS was in Canada as the quality and accessibility to demo these instruments is sadly unavailable here. Can’t even buy a Pono in Canada :(. I really appreciate your reviews Alex and especially the descriptions of how the neck “feels in your hands”. Also the variation of sound samples. Thanks for this!
Folkway Music in Waterloo sells Pono. I'm considering getting the Acacia (Pono AB), after I try out the Kala solid acacia at L&M (can't get to Waterloo but I've actually emailed them to send audio samples). On video, the Pono sounds a tad nicer than the Kala, but not by much. The Leho baritones I've tried at L&M aren't bad either.
Excellent! Thank you
I’ve been recently so interested in buying a Baritone ukulele! They’re just so unique and the deeper, richer sound is just gorgeous
Take the baritone plunge-you won’t regret it!
Great job illustrating the history, and musical value of the instrument! I own a few Ponos, and a Kala, and all are wonderful. Large and velvety tone....I find myself playing classical figures - largely because of the combination of ' punchy warmth', and my tone influenced playing. A wonderful instrument!
Nice video, Alex,,,, Lots of great information... I do have an Ohana Baritone and it is really cool.... I didn't really think about the slightly shorter scale length until you pointed it our, however, I did think the strings felt a bit slinkier than others.... thanks again
Great comparison. Love my Pono that I got from you a few years back. As you said, it might look a bit plain compared to some of the others, but it does play and sound really nice.
Great vid Alex! Those high end Baris are unquestionably beautiful but those Flights really stood out for me, given their price point. Love the punch and clarity the spruce top gives them. The carabao just edged it for me.....
“…it’s almost as if they’ve been doing it a hundred years.” Nice one, Alex!
🤙
I love me some baritone ❤️ I have Cordobas and an Ohana which I love
Very nice video, all those beauties... so yummi 👍
Waiting for soprano video.
Good review as usual. While it is expected that the high end models will look and sound good, the Ana Ole held its own and I liked the Uma. Uma as a brand is as you have said under appreciated. A nice sound and great value.
That Manako-B mango sounds soooo good. Every note perfectly balanced. Not muddying together. Very sweet. Also, very surprised how much I liked the first Ohana. Nice sound for a cheaper laminate.
I love that you play the ukulele the same way I do....A right hand ukulele strung right handed, but you play it upside down. I'm left handed and just always felt more comfortable playing that way. Also, whenever I go somewhere and don't have my ukulele with me.....I can still play other peoples ukuleles because I play right handed ukuleles upside down. ( left handed ukuleles are probably one in 500 out there).
I needed this comment. Real positivity! 🌟
Pono AB for me! What an epic sound!
Love the spruce tops for baritones. Surprised you didn't throw a cedar in the mix. But the Caraboa stole my heart.
Love my Pono's. I have a Nui which is more like a Tenor guitar and the UL4-1 which is hands down the BEST baritone a person can buy. It fits in an overhead bins even in the hard case.
The two Flights sound very different. But both great and both great value.
I have an Ohana TK 39 tenor. would love to have that Ohana bari. I have a Mitchell bari but could always use a better one.
The Manako-B and the B35 have the best sound in my opinion.
Thank you so much. This has been helpful. The laminate at the beginning to me sounded awesome. I did not like the second one. Sounded awfully tinny to me.
If I were in the market for a baritone I would only consider all solid wood Kamaka or Kanile'a. I would not waste my money on any laminates even if they had solid tops.
If you don't have a Carabao baritone for me to play in October we're never speaking again - I want something chunky in my hands. Adore the Aurora soooooo much, any idea on the stock strings?
Daddario pro arte I think...
@@SouthernUkuleleStore thank you love you
...I know
Hey, do you play that ukes upside down? 🙃🙂
Hi Alex. In the vid you say the Uma UBU-20S has a solid mahogany top but the description on your site (following the link above) has it as a laminate mahogany top.
Sorry for the confusion. We were told originally it had a solid top but managed to get a recent confirmation from Uma that this wasn't true.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore OK Thanks.
do you play a righty uke upside down and strung righty or a lefty uke strung lefty?
Wow that was really wonderful to listen to! I really wish I could play a Baritone Uke.
How hard would you say it is to learn for an adult to pick up...really curious as I don't play any instrument at the moment, and this looks fun
It's smaller and has less strings than a guitar. The Baritone is one of the easiest instruments to get a nice sound out. You should do it!!
Did you end up getting a baritone?
In case you did, there are some lovely lessons on CZcams by Matt Stead and All for Uke aimed at absolute beginners - including people who have never played an instrument!
@@ettoliram8116 Hi hope you are well. I didn't buy a baritone uke; however your message has whetted my interest again
Great vid alex. As a matter of interest are the ukes fitted with high D or low D strings.
Low D. You would rarely find a high D set on a uke out of the factory
I’ve got a uke with high D and one with low D. They sound totally different.
I manufacture high d and low d sets of strings under my ukes with Alex brand made for me by Rotosound... just sayin'
Thanks Alex. Will bear it in mind.
Kamaka!
I have small hands. Would the Ohana BK35 have the same narrower neck as the BK10?
Yes
Which model would be best with octave lower, GCEA strings?
Guitar
Can a baritone uke be strung oppositely for a lefty?
Yes
I here some string noise of your fingers sliding on the strings. Do baritone ukes use wound strings ?
Mostly, yes they come with wound strings
Great video but the songs are so slow I keep falling asleep.
play the same tune on each one please
But that's no fun!
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Im not trying to have fun,its easier to hear the differences in each one if you play the same thing, thats logical I think
Absolutely, after 500 videos though I just do what feels right on the day or il go crazy 🤪
Hi Alex, what do you think about radiused fretboard ukuleles? for example Mya moe : czcams.com/video/0yzrdPApAgM/video.html Thanks
Hi Diego, I already replied to you when you asked me this morning
