Another excellent video Leigh. I have had many Yamaha keyboard instruments and although I don’t currently have a Genos 2, your videos are so helpful. My CVP 809 has similar recording features. When wanting to isolate a single track to listen to (as you did in this tutorial) you can shortcut by press and holding the track icon you want to isolate. This turns off all the other tracks. This is a lot quicker than turning off all the other 15 tracks individually. Press the track icon again and all the other tracks turn back on. I assume that will be the same for Genos 2.
Thanks again for a brilliant channel.

Have had various keyboards over decades, including a few Yamaha arrangers in the early years. I currently have a Roland FP-7 Stage Piano which is beginning to show its age. Having watched most of your latest Genos2 videos, which I've found to be very inspiring and full of brilliant musicianship, you've more than persuaded me to purchase a Genos2. As you've demonstrated it is an awesome piece of kit. Thanks a million for all your views, advice and brilliant playing Leigh.

I used to play keyboard in bands during my twenties (now fourty nine) but I stopped at thirty. Never played since but just recently thought I should buy a keyboard again and start playing.
I had a Korg M1 and Korg X2 (I think). They were really good at the time.
So recently when I started researching keyboard tech to see what had changed (in nearly twenty years) I was surprised how little had changed. I watched videos on the Roland Fantom, Korg Nautilus etc and while they were impressive in a few areas (film score type sounds etc), I honestly found myself being underwhelmed at what I was hearing. Maybe I set my expectation too high.
Then I found your channel and saw the Yamaha Genos 2. This is what I expected to hear with twenty years of tech advancement. It's utterly stunning. I am often just left amazed by your videos in that every single instrument and style you play sounds so realistic. If I close my eyes, the band is playing or the orchestra is playing. It does not sound like a single man playing on a keyboard!
I actually can't afford the Genos 2 but it is what I'm going to aim for, Yamaha have produced a black box with every style of music so wonderfully recreated that there is no need for anything else.

My personal opinion is that I prefer using a DAW for recording. I'm using Cakewalk and I also integrate Band In A Box with it. I think Genos, or Korg, or whatever you're using, integrated with an DAW, Cakewalk, Cubase, whatever, is the easiest way to go about this. One of the things I like about that is that If I make a small mistake, I can go back in the DAW and start my recording point say one bar ahead of the mistake and then go to one bar after the mistake instead of having to re-record the whole part and channel. I also can record multiple takes for any given part or channel. So, if I'm doing a synth lead for channel 2, and I want to have different synth sounds or even different notes, I can record each part I want, and then mute and unmute the parts (in MIDI) until I find what I want. I can also cut and paste parts, so if I decide that I like 12 bars from one take, and then four bars from another take, I can cut and paste those four bars into the other track.
But, this is just my opinion, of course. The final MIDI can be imported back into the Genos for storage in it's internal memory if you wanted to use it elsewhere (say gigging out and you were recording everything but your lead track).
Finally, I'm glad to see you back. I did send you an e-mail yesterday, and then to see you today is a happy coincidence. I wasn't 'worried', but it's nice to know you're okay and were just on vacation. I hope you get better soon and get over the flu. I had that freakin' RSV a couple of times in the last 14-16 months and I hate it, so I know where you're coming from.
Looking forward to your next video, and I'm really hoping you'll get around to doing the Jazz, Latin, Oldies, and Easy LIstenin, as well as the Ballroom style sections.

As an owner of a rather old Yamaha Tyros 4 (precursor of Genos) I can inform you that you can easily set a specific bar to record from, and you can set up punch-in and punch-out points as well, so fixing small mistakes is very well possible. Still, the midi event post processing is indeed very awkward and barebone, but it can be used to modify, insert and delete midi events, though not in bulk. So an external midi sequencer or daw is still a good idea. To compare, on my even older Roland workstation, there were functions to make entire sections softer or louder, or more staccato or legato for example, which seems to me like basic midi operations. Not available on Tyros, and it seems not on Genos either.

Wow!!! Bravo Bravo Maestro!!! You are going to make me buy one of these Genos 2s!!! I love that song!!! It’s funny that you said what you are hearing when you go to recording something, because that’s what’s going on in my head too!!! I hear the big finished piece, but have hardly ever been able to get it to finish like I hear it inside!!! This keyboard seems to make that a much more doable prospect!!!
I’ve been using arrangers for a while, my latest being a Yamaha PSR-S975, which is great sounding, but it has button pushes instead of a touch screen, etc, and the styles are not anything like the G2. I have learned a lot about getting around on the 975 by watching you though, and that has helped a lot!!! Thank you for all you are doing for us here in the community!!!

Thank you for your Genos 2 videos. You are one of few people who meet me with this brilliant and beautiful instrument and makes my decision to buy it! I have my own from 8th February and I am amazed how beautiful it sounds, how easy it is to use and how many things, time with it is on my way! Such an endless musical inspiration!!!
I am little bit disappointed about sound of GrandPiano to be played with my old Stage Piano connected through MIDI, but with all styles in mix it sound very good. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but it seems like GrandPaino sound is little flat? I was hoping to use it to “only piano” play style on my old Hammer Action Stage Piano connected to Genos 2 through MIDI, but on my Yamaha HS7 Studio Monitors I hear that something is missing in sound. Maybe you have some tips how to adjust something to be more playable and deep in sound while playing “only piano style” pieces?

It had real "catchy" lyrics too - such a shame. I'm sure your song with my lyrics could have made it go VIRAL! On a more technical note, you'll have to show us how to integrate Cubase into Genos2. Leigh, thank you so much for making these tutorials!
Anyway you can make a vid to show how to use the Genos as a giging keyboard as well? And what I mean by this is that I play with bands, but I'm going to be using the Genos as a one man band to fill in during the week. So I want to set it up as a sort of Swiss Army knife kinda thing.
So I want it both ways, and who doesn't? lol
Set ups for giging with bands, and then flip a switch and I am the band.
So setting up the Genos to use as just a keyboard, and not an arranger, when needed.
    Thank you.

Welcome back Leigh. This is an excellent video showing some of the more advanced features. I find the midi sequencing features very limited to be of practical use. If Yamaha could provide a more visual representation of the midi tracks with a visual marker for the song postition and notes like Cubase on each channel would be a vast improvment. Having to revert to an external midi sequencer when you have a professional arranger keyboard to compose on is a big step backwards. I know there is a midi step editor but that is only good for fixing single note mistakes in my opinion.

    • @LeighWilbraham

To be fair it’s not a synth it’s an arranger.

@@LeighWilbraham Yes, I know the difference but given the large touch screen and the Genos being a workstation arranger, I'd expect much more of a midi sequencer for composing songs. Synths have even less midi sequencer features than arranger keyboards. I think the Genos OS would be capable of running a Cubase like sequencer or something similar showing the midi tracks. You cannot disagree that this is a feature that you would not want yourself. I noticed the need for you to start from the very beginning of the song every time a new track or change was made to the song and it was only a short 1 minute song clip.

Hi Leigh, I have recently purchased a used Genos 1 (upgrade from SX700). I'm looking at joining your Genos club, but I have noticed recently that with the arrival of the Genos 2, you are doing styles specifically for Genos 2 that would not be available for the Genos 1. • @mrdali67
    @mrdali67 Před 4 měsíci

Only sad thing about the way the Genos works, is at least as far as I have come, it's not possible to combine Audio and Midi tracks. It would be real nice to be able to record your key parts as midi and then add a real guitar from the inputs, or a vocal track that maybe could use the onboard Harmonizer etc.. But as far as I understand Midi and Audio is 2 completely different things. One of the things that would be on my wishlist for an upgrade. It's One of the things that I always loved with my Kronos, that you have 16 midi tracks + 16 Audio tracks and you can at any time bounce any of the Midi tracks with effects to Audio tracks and start over with a clean slate where the midi tracks bounced no longer take up poliphony or effect ressourses. But the Yamaha system is fairly easy to work with as it is. It's generally much more intuitive to work with. It's just some features that really would take the Genos to the next level for those people that like to work ON the keyboard rather than using a computer program to record on. Still many of those people around that feel they are more productive on whatever keyboard that is their primary workstation, than switching between the keyboard and computer and other outboard gear you may be using, and the machine already have a pretty big array of effects and stuff for being able to do these things. It's just a question of making a slightly better integration of the different parts. Only thing that annoys me is the same as you did here Leigh with forgetting to select the instrument in the right 1 when replacing the 12'th track. It's totally illogical that the system is not defaulting to select whatever is on the track your working on and have to go thru all the button pressing to select the right instrument on whatever keyboard part your currently on .. at least in my head. Feel free to disagree 🙃.

You can use the expansion manager software to import wav or sound font samples (SF format) and create your own expansion packs. I don't think it is possible or a good idea to copy the Yamaha sound samples to create your own expansion pack from them, they are encrypted to prevent copying. If you change a voice sound on the keyboard by tweaking the eefects and eq then you can save a custom sound patch to usb stick without creating an expansion pack.
