He pulls off fake arrogance so well, I try to do that to raise my own self esteem but people take it seriously and it back fires 😑
It works for him because he's famous and people already like him a lot. His very fame and likeability is based on the charming arrogance of his character ("charming" because in the movies you see that behind that arrogance there is also a lot of easy-to-identify-with vulnerability). Plus, people like arrogance when it comes with a full package (charisma, extraordinary abilities, hero like qualities, courage, self sacrifice, etc). Last but not least, you must remember that actors actually play a role even when they do interviews or speeches. They build a certain image for their career. I doubt that he acts like this in his personal life, with his family and close friends. They probably wouldn't accept it either. Real relationships are based on openness, humbleness and the willingness to show your vulnerabilities and authentic self. Arrogance is just a mask to hide yourself, it doesn't work well in real life. As you have already seen. :)

If you ever have time, listen to the interview of Matthew McConaughey with Jordan Peterson. They talk about the fact that it's actually both impossible and emotionally unhealthy for an actor to be his authentic self during interviews and such. It's not that you don't want to be real, it's that people are always constructing for you a certain image (based also on the characters you have played). You may lose yourself along the way and start believing you really are that persona that has been made up for you. Or, as Matthew did, you make choices like taking a break at the height of your career to find yourself again, distance yourself from certain family members or friends that keep pushing that image of you to keep getting money and publicity off of you, and learn how to protect your private life. I actually think RDJ has mastered his public persona and is now using it for his own benefit. If you are taking it against him, it's very childish of you. You have no idea what it means, what it really costs someone to be a public person. What these people are doing is they simply learn how to protect themselves and keep their careers flourishing at the same time.

Now, Downey Jr & Reynolds playing other characters (but still the same kind of characteristics, as that's what they do) is something I'd totally be down to watch. Downey Jr's Sherlock has become one of my favourites as it's just an extension of himself (or that's how he makes it feel), just like Ryan in basically every role he takes.
