Quick Tip: How To Install a Hogue Monogrip

- For years, the URL for Hogue's website has been GetGrip.com - and that describes exactly what their Monogrip® does for you. This one-piece, molded rubber grip gives you a comfortable super-secure hold on your revolver for excellent control and minimal battering of the hand due to recoil. The ergonomic Monogrip® is a drop-in replacement for the pretty but sometimes less than comfortable factory grips. Skeptical about the "drop in" part? Don't be. Brownells Firearm Support Technician Caleb Savant walks us through the installation and demonstrates how easy it is to "Go Mono" for a better grip on that Smith & Wesson (or other) revolver. J-frame? K-frame? N-frame? Forget the frame-size alphabet soup because, as Caleb says, Monogrip® installation is the same for all of 'em. Bonus Tip: A Brownells Magna-Tip® 210-6 bit fits S&W grip screws juuust right.

Super tip from Hogue support if for some reason the screwhole on the stirrup/bracket doesn’t align with the hole on the grip (which had never happened to me before but did installing a Hogue monogrip on my N-Frame Model 627): get a typical, conventional foam earplug (mine were blue so very visible). Cut the earplug in half and gently, using a probe or small punch, insert the piece of foam between the stirrup/bracket and the frame. Don’t worry that it’s obstucting the hole from underneath, the screw will push right into it. Slide the grip on to where it is fitted perfectly in place. Using a flashlight, look through the hole and see where the earplug is showing through the screw hole (this is where a brightly colored one comes in handy). Using the punch (and careful not to damage the threads), gently guide the stirrup/bracket hole in alighment with the hole on the monogrip. In my case, when shining the flashlight in, all I could see was blue when I had done this correctly...that was how I knew the holes were aligned. Screw locked in first try. Shout out to Teresa in Hogue customer service for this tip.
Another way, which I just did, is to first put the screw in the bottom hole before you slide the grip up. When you slide the grip up, just before it reaches all the way to the top, you'll feel resistance against the screw. At this point just start screwing it in, and as you do, it will move the grip up the rest of the way and into place as you tighten it. I tried over and over and it never aligned, then I tried it that way and it worked perfect the first time. I didn't even need an earplug or anything extra.
I appreciate that this grip went on my Model 986 without a fuss. Thanks and Blessings Caleb!
Its nice that brownells is reaching out to a younger crowd. That teen is going to grow up to be a fine gunsmith. He may not be old enough to own a handgun yet, but when he is, hes going to have a nice revolver.
Excellent tutorial, thank you !
It would have been nice to see a closeup of the gun with the new grip on it at the end of the video
Right
Thanks for the how to.
Great Vid.
I have a older NEF 32 h&r 2.5 inch revolver model r73 was wondering if this would fit, the wood grips are to slipperly for my liking
What kind of screwdriver bit set are you using?
Anyone know if this fits properly on the rock island m200
your original grips look much better tho
Yup, they replaced good g-10 grips with crap.
The monogrips on the Hogue website are now solid nylon, not rubber. Also, I couldn't find them on your website. Out of production in rubber?
Can i keep laminate wood grips into plastic bag?
How about doing a video on replacing the grip on a Taurus Model 66.It doesn't have the screw at the bottom.
garageguy879 the hogue grip will be compatible. I installed one on my Taurus 85 and it comes with a little adapter clip and a roll pin that will allow you to use the screw on the bottom.
Does it fit a judge ????
You make it look easy. Had a bear ofna time with my detective special. wasnt pretty b
Why didn't you have to replace the pin?
Doesn't that cross pin have to be replaced with the Hogue provided pin?
Yes it does.
Well not sure cuz on my ruger blackhawk it didnt need to be replaced not sure on sw
If i didn't see this i would've lost my shit lol to excited to change my grip and i missed the other pin
Good review very straightforward. But how do you remove the grip. I might wanna change to other grips.
You guys have a bracket for sale some ass hole sold me the grip without it
Hey dude, I got a question. I already installed my hogue on a pistol, but how long do they last, and when should I replace it.?
Now this is how it should be designed. I have a Hogue grip that they actually sell for $30 WITHOUT a retaining screw. So, you just have to hope and pray that you can slide some cheap plastic on either side of a roll pin without damaging the cheap plastic holes inside of the cheap plastic butt cap. Then, if they don't align properly, good luck removing the cheap plastic butt cap without damaging the cheap plastic. You can try to repeat the process, but by the time the grip is installed, you will have damaged your firearm, the table, and the cheap plastic grip.
I would prefer a retaining screw at the bottom.
Anyone who needed a tutorial to figure this out, probably can’t wipe their ass without getting it on their face either.
This guy looks like Spitting Image's puppet of Jared Kushner😂
if you have to watch a video to be able to do this...please don't carry around me....lol
So easy a DEMOCRAT could had done it !!
How could you tell he was a Democrat?
*have
If you are going to trash talk about intelligence you should really use proper grammar. Otherwise you look like a fool.
Tried to put it on a 686 and it wouldn’t work
Nothing like taking a $80 g10 grip of and slamming $30 rubber lol
