  • This video shows you the exercises I use in my puppy and dog training program to stop leash pulling. I am now offering tele-training and online coaching for clients who already have a dog or puppy that they would like to have us help them train their dog at home using our training methods and individualized guidance. Visit our website for more information on this new program.
    www.SnakeRiverCanine.com
I made this video by request for informative purposes but also to help clients who purchase puppies from us trouble shoot problems that may arise after their puppy arrives to its new home.
    * See below for information on the kind of leash I am using. I recommend working with a professional dog trainer (or myself through virtual dog training sessions) in order to use a slip lead properly as it requires specific knowledge to use it safely and effectively.
My method of training is not new but encourages the dog to pay close attention to my movements. As you can see I am not doing a severe correction but I am confident in my movements and as mentioned in the video, brisk walking and quick corrections make this method of training very effective.

My Miniature Schnauzer was a 4 year old rescue dog when we got her, and a trainer thought she had social anxiety (a six-week training course and regular socializing but she actually got worse instead of better!) Anyway this video's method is what the trainer recommended for leash pulling. It should work for most dogs but mine was an exception. Spent the whole time walking back and forth, day after day, week after week, my little stinker never learned. Finally I decided you know what when you bark and pull we're just turning around & going home. Try again tomorrow, repeat process. But you know what in about a week she figured it out, she'd rather get to go for a walk and now she almost never barks or pulls

Took five year until I could trust my Schnuzer reliably stay by my side off lead. Twice daily work sessions of twenty minutes for five years. She was great on lead but if a distraction came along she would bolt. Click trainig and everything. Five long years but I finally won!

I tried this with my MS but he still pulled. I put a doggy backpack on him- problem solved. It was so funny , he had the work additude and all his focus was on it . He actually was more focused on what I was wanting him to do. So just another option.

Giving and taking is crucial on the leash, another way I see it is my corrections are like ABS brakes! You're inviting the dog to recognise a more relaxed walk!

Great video and information. The link to the leash however is no longer available. Can you suggest another training leash? Also at what age would you start with the training leash? We just adopted a sweet mini schnauzer and he is 11 weeks old. Thanks

I had to start having my mini on a leash since he began running away and having to bale him out of the pound for the second time, he’s on absolute nightmare on a leash since he hasn’t been on one in 5 years.

Many thanks for your very helpful videos and helping to relieve some of my nerves before getting my Miniature Schnauzer puppy in March. Watching yourself and other trainers the puppies are always walked on the left side - is there any reason for this ? Sorry the leash link does not work and wondered if you can send a link to the leash you use ? Many thanks Bob
