I just wanna say to the people watching this who are learning Korean and have learned Korean for 2 or more years but aren’t as fluent as she is that it’s okay. Everyone is different with how fast they can learn and considering how long it takes you to figure out what learning method works best for you. I have been learning Korean for 3 years with a 2 month break in it. I’m not as fluent as she is. However that’s also because of my discipline to study and the break I took. You got this! Continue to study don’t lose hope!

when I heard her speak and I heard her say she only studied for two years...idk...I got jealous and sad I guess lol. Like I'm happy for her but im so disappointed in myself because I can't speak like her. when I hear of random people over the world who have studied for few years and are this good i feel so sad that I might never reach their level.
Please, please dont be. There are many things that influence learning korean and any language in general. Dont compare yourself to someone that you dont know what conditions they are in. Dont be unfair to yourself. Keep on trying and keep going.

Don't be disheartened! There's a HUGE difference between studying for a few hours a day for 2 years as opposed to studying for 15 minutes a day for two years. I'm not saying Maria has studied for hours each day, but many of us just don't have the time and our learning will naturally take longer. Focus on yourself and don't try to measure yourself against anyone else's progress. Everyone's different!

Billy 선생님 seriously I don't know how you are gonna take this, but I feel like you know how to correct Korean better than many of my actual Korean friends(and some teachers). I guess it should be obvious considering you had to learn the intricacies of the language as a Korean learner yourself. Do you have any content related to improving accent? It's been 4 years and I am still correcting a lot of things with my accent like the strong consonants(ㅋ,ㅍ,ㅊ). How does one be expressive in Korean but maintain that almost neutral tone that's apparent in the Seoul dialect? I'm from Texas so I kinda had to work extra hard to kill my accent, but I think I overdid it. I love these analysis videos because you kind of point out these errors Korean learners (myself included) typically make. I think awareness is important.

for the strong consonants, expel more air when you say them. they're also called "aspirated consonants". using the plain consonants as a reference, the extra line you see that makes a plain consonant become an aspirated one stands for an extra burst of air

I’m really glad you talked about the politeness levels. My friends and I were really confused about when to use formal speech. One of my friends thought you would only use it if you were speaking to the president 🤣 Two of them thought you needed to you it every time you met someone or spoke to someone you didn’t know well. And I knew you should use formal speech with your boss, but otherwise I had no idea. So thank you!

Primary resource for speaking is speaking practice! I don't think there's one right resource you should use as long as you actually practice speaking, but in my case I've been doing language exchange for about a year. :)
In terms of other skills, I'd recommend not looking for the "perfect resource", but to just find SOMETHING and spend a lot of time with it. When it comes to listening, that was a Korean/English podcast called "SpongeMind" in my case. On there they talk about language learning techniques I implement as well like "repetitive listening" and "shadowing".

Maria has me feeling stuff because I'm like wow 2 yrs only and she is speaking with such ease , I'm nearly 6 months in with very slow progress , recognizing words sometimes I can read and understand short sentences . But at same time feeling very hopeful as a goal to reach if that's where I'm at in 2 yrs . Obviously I need to up my studying intensity 화이팅

Wow, first of all, I am so impressed! Maria you did such a good job omg, your Korean is so impressive! I have also been studying for exactly two years now, as of May 2023, but I have also lived and studied Korean in Korea for six months! Although I am not as good as her, at least at speaking. Im better at writing and reading. But I felt it when you pointed out the mixing of politeness levels! I mix politeness levels all the time 🥲 quite literally hahah have to work on that, definitely

Maria의 훌륭한 발음도 인상깊었지만, 특히 7:16 "케이팝을 좋아하는 친구가 있어서 (쓰읍~) 지난 (아니) (그~) 2018년..."에서 생각할 시간을 벌기 위해 쓰는 소리인 "(쓰읍~)", "(그~)"와 혼잣말 "(아니)"를 듣고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
이건 제가 태어나서 지금껏 말하고 듣는, 살아있는 한국어 그 자체이거든요.
만약 입말(↔글말)을 다루는 교재가 있다고 해도 저런 상황에 쓴다는 것을 쉽게 설명하지 못할 것이며, 실전적인 말하기 연습이 없는 한 체득하기도 힘들 것 같습니다.
Maria의 노력에 큰 감명을 받고 갑니다.

In terms of politeness level in Korean language i can quiet understand how important it is to include it when your speaking to someone that is stranger, older than you, mentor etc. Im a Filipino, and in our language we use "po" and "opo" just as the same way Koreans do.

From having spoken to many fluent speakers, the studying habits are always something like "studied a lot and practiced speaking a lot more." Then the details will differ depending on the person, such as how they did listening practice (dramas, or podcasts, or just listening to conversations), the books they used (textbooks, or online lessons), et cetera. You can learn Korean a thousand different ways, as long as you're actually practicing it along the way. Everyone fluent I've spoken to has also mentioned how they started *using* the language right away, whether they were aware of it much or not. Things like thinking to yourself (making sentences in your head) count too :)

OH so thats why my much older Korean friend and i use banmal, because we are friends in a german context, we germans dont feel comfortable using polite forms on friends, and it feels wrong to be so polite to her, although i respect her very much, because we both interact on the level of german culture, although we speak in korean.

It's impressive how she became able to speak Korean fluently in just two years. I realised how difficult Korean is when I entered high school. I started to learn Korean grammar and it's so hard even as a native speaker.
Especially her intonation sounded just like a native Korean although her pronunciation needs to be improved a little more.
Just keep up the good work. I'm sure you'll soon become an expert in Korean.

I think you're quite fluent for studying only for two years. There are so many Koreans who can barely make a complete sentence in English despite having learnt it for decades.

Hey Billy. I have been learning Korean for 6 yrs and I was not consistent at it as I was so interested in k dramas. I learned Korean from a youtuber named Justin Park but not from scratch as he used to give some words that I I memorized and learned from Seemile,a Korean teaching channel which was hard because I didn't know verbs . It's quite understandable.
Korean grammar is damn hard. But the words are easier to memorise as they tend to be more tied to each orher and intuitive.
For example
finger 손가락
palm 손바닥
wrist 손목
As you can see, all of them include the word 손 which means hand while English words have nothing in common. Furthermore 가락 means stick and 바닥 means bottom and 목 means neck. I just recommend to memorise the words first if you're struggling with grammar. You can at least get by if you know the words. Move on to the grammar later.

It might be just me but whenever I listen to girls speaking a foreign language I think they always sound better than me. I studied a lot of Japanese which has similar politeness levels. I will never get over how they taught us formal Japanese (not super formal but still formal) before teaching us regular Japanese. So I'm liable to speak formally to my friends. Sucks.
So sad... I have been learning korean since 2013 and still in basic even I attend classes every week
