  • We discuss and demo the Yamaha YAS-62 Alto Saxophone. Available online via: www.dawkes.co....
    The Yamaha YAS 62 Alto Saxophone is the first in their highly regarded professional range. Designed and produced in the main Yamaha factory in Japan, the 62 has been a leading model for many years having found success in all genres of music. John Park was one of the jazz musicians who helped design the Yamaha 62. John was a world class player, and played lead alto with Stan Kenton in the 70s! He was a special player, as well as a great friend and mentor! He kept me notified while the 62 was in development, and I wasn't disappointed when I played it! The soprano is an unbelievable instrument! I now play a 62iii with the silver finish! I've always mostly maintained that a Mark VI is still the horn for classical players. However, after hearing a few Yamaha alto saxes with Vandoren mouthpieces, I've changed my mind!

    Excellent review as always and really love your channel. I was wondering what you thought about the pmauriat horns especially the system 76 dark lacquer alto?

      Thanks for your comment and for watching the channel! There are a range of brands/models out there but it's not possible for us to stock them all, primarily because certain brands don't get passed our QC processes. We try to offer the premium options (in terms of quality of build, intonation, support etc) at each price point.

    Using the same mouthpiece setup, Simon played the Yanagisawa AWO1 and this Yamaha YAS62. AW01 does not sound to be as versatile, and it sounds much brighter. I'd say YAS62 has a better-defined core sound (perhaps thanks to its robustness?). Dawkes, your thoughts on this?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  Před 4 lety +4

      It's quite a subjective one for us - we think the AWO1 is pretty versatile but perhaps the YAS-62 is even more so. Don't forget that Simon plays Yamaha though so he automatically feels very comfortable on them and that perhaps can come across in the sound. It's like comparing a BMW and Audi...you can't go wrong with either but certain people will have their favourite.

      Zvonimir Tosic while the 62 is great (I own one) it is not as good as the Yanagisawa. Sound is subjective but the Yani is a better horn.

    Thanks for sharing it. Could you please let me know the differences between YAS-62 iii and YAS-62 04? Someone says 04 replaces iii; others say they are exactly the same but iii is for US market while 04 is for European market. Confused :-(

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha! If you asked 3 people at Yamaha you'd get 3 different answers! All we can confirm is that the 62 04 is the current EU version and that's what we sell: www.dawkes.co.uk/yamaha-yas-62-alto-saxophone-saxophone/16200

  • @crashbangwhallopwhatavideo

    Hi folks, got mine due in no small part, to your analysis here. Would an a45 jumbo java vandoren be a decent mouthpiece on this horn?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  Před 3 lety +1

      It would be quite lively (bright) but LOTS of fun on the YAS-62. Depends what you're looking for. It won't be subtle but if you want pop/rock/funk brightness and projection then the A45 JJ would be great :)

      @@dawkesmusic exactly what I was hoping you'd say. My dad loves the sax solo from Hazel O'Connor's "Will You" so I think this will be ideal to blast it out a bit more :) thanks for the reply!

    I have a Jumbo Java A45 and Otto Link Tone Edge 6* mouthpiece. Do you think both of these mouthpieces would work well with this saxophone?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  Před 2 lety +1

      Sure, both can work nicely. They're quite different mouthpieces though, the Java will be more 'lively' whereas the Link should offer a 'warmer' or softer tone in comparison. Just depends what you prefer :)
