  • The next entry in my Monster Hunter Highlights video series. This time we go over the Royal Ludroth, king of the Ludroth pack, and hunter within the rainforest rivers! He's one of my favorite low tier monsters and a very early wall for me. Enjoy!

Its good to give respect to the lower tier monsters. They were always a important part in a persons journey in getting to hunt the big bois. Especially since many of them were peoples walls and why some people remember them were BECAUSE they helped them get better. Yian Kut Ku for me when i first started in MH1 still has a special place in my life cause of that. Its also a reason why i love Yian Garuga so much, making a stronger more cracked out version with even its own theme song just makes the whole Yian line so special to me *cept you blue, literally 0 reasons to exist lmao* so yeah never forget your early game monster bros folks. They were the ones that helped brought you to the point of fighting Gods, love em or hate em that is a fact.

I came into the series with Rise, so my experiences with the Great Soggi are a bit different than most. He never really posed me much of a challenge, since my first playthrough was with LBG so he wasn't my first wall, that was taken by Rathian. Though since then, Royal Ludroth has become one of my favorite low-tier monsters. I think it's a creative design, fun and simple moveset, and great lore. There's not much I can say that wasn't already said in the video, but I hope Royal Ludroth becomes a mainstay of the series. I've finished world, and am working my way through 4U, and I've missed him in both games.

As for an early game monster that I love, I adore Tetranadon.
The Kappa inspiration and the sumo fighting style, his preferred diet of Goocumbers that he will just shove his face into the ground to find, the mix of frog, turtle, and platypus in his design, his wondrous armor and weapons, I just love him so much!

But to answer your question I have one in particular that was a wall for a while and now it's become my marker between the low chair to the entry of the tough ones: Barroth.
Now I don't know if anyone remembers the Wii version but I remember him being particularly tough on the village quest. He would be out in the hot area he would start to roar which would cause distractions and if you had the mud he had different weaknesses. Which i didn't know at all!

My first MH game was World/Iceborne. At the time I was breezing through the start of the game with Defender gear. I just picked them because they had such great defense or did great damage. And I loved blast. Might've hit some bumps in difficulty but I didn't struggle that much. Then Iceborne came around for me eventually and it started getting real for me. Viper Tobi Kadachi, Fulgur Anjanath, Glavenus, Brachydios, Nightshade Paolumu, Tigrex, and others proved to be really challenging fights for me. But Velkhana...
Velkhana was the absolute worst for me. I hated fighting it, and I was determined to fight it solo. I would fail countless times and I contemplated every decision I ever made in my life that had brought me to this point where I was suffering fighting an ice dragon. Somehow, someway, I killed it.
Then came Shara... But Velkhana was the first wall in Monster Hunter for me.

In general though, low-mid monsters have always been some of my favourites (great jaggi, yian kut ku, zamtrios, the aforementioned najarala, bishaten, even iodrome). There’s such a good variety of monsters that isn’t seen so much in the higher tiers, and the monsters have such personality that goes beyond how scary and badass they are.

As a pokemon fan i saw a knock off that was actually well made and i tried it out and fell in love with the creature design. Only after I dug deeper into this rabbit hole and played through everything i could of this amazing series. But, during my first playthrough I had to choose between two monsters that I really liked, Zamtrios and Royal Ludroth.
To me they were pretty much the same in terms of looks, but powerlevel wise, the former felt better.
I played through the whole game with that Zamtrios and always thought about that one Ludroth i left behind.

i think the difference in lore details between elder dragons and the lower level monsters makes perfect sense in universe too. of course more is known about ludroth and royal ludroth, they're much more common and easier to observe !
way easier to get your hands on a specimen to study.
on a different note, i don't think the sponge on the weapons serves a solely decorative purpose. instead, it's probably the exact thing that gives them the water element. water being stored in the spongey bits and released upon each hit is a really neat concept to me, and i like how grounded that feels.
anyway royal ludroth has been one of my favorite monsters for a long time and i really enjoyed this video on him !

I must add: tri’s royal ludroth is considerably harder then 3u’s or portable’s. Many think that tri is the hardest in the 3rd gen because of the lowest armor stats of the hunter. That is wrong: tri’s ai is drastically different and cleverer then any of the 3rd gen. I love royal ludroth and did hunt a lot of them in mhp3. I first played tri in 2021 and even I sometimes carted with royal ludroth. Tri’s monsters do less 60-degree turns and instead usually use attacks to turn. They also do lesser attacks that live them open. In mhp3 royal will unlikely perform his ultra attack with the run and usually does hipcheck. In tri he spams run attack, rarely hipckecks and jumps

I might be a little late but that's because I couldn't decide which early game Boi was my favorite. Because there are quite a few.
Aknosom is a great example. The fight works perfectly with his design.
So is bishaten. Both of them have so much character going for them.
But I ultimately ended up with Daimyio Hermitaur. Why?

Despite the fact that I also started with Tri and was also goddamm TERRIBLE at it, at least I managed to figure out how to upgrade my equipment pretty quickly, so I managed to get past Luddy just fine. I still fought it plenty of times, though. It was my favorite test fight for any new Fire or Thunder element weapon I ended up crafting. It was back when I thought elemental resistances had a way bigger impact on damage dealt than it really did, so I did have multiple monsters to test new weapons with. Obviously, I only used their armor set's resistances to figure out their weaknesses. We didn't have the detailed Hunter's Notes we have now back then and I was a bit too prideful to look up the full stats online.
So yeah, I don't have that big of a connection to it, but I do still have fond memories of it as a decent practice partner. My first very big wall in Tri ended up being the Barioth, funny enough. Its speed was so overwhelming to me back then and it's the main culprit for making me the Lance main I am today. Because hey... didn't matter if I couldn't figure out when and where to dodge its attacks properly if I could just block them.
Also, as a Lance main, I do approve of wanting to bring back underwater combat. The Lance was surprisingly fun to use there, with the Lance charge making you attack like a huge swordfish.
