  • Filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie discuss their 2019 film "Uncut Gems" in a post-screening Q&A in MoMA's Contenders series.
In "Uncut Gems," a thriller 10 years in the making, the Safdie brothers take their gritty treatment of New York’s underbelly to dizzying new heights. Adam Sandler’s revelatory performance as a bullish jeweler down on his luck-a mensch who can’t resist a big play and only barely lands on his feet-propels this breathless character study that zigzags from the Diamond District (where Sadfie père worked) to the sidelines of the Boston Celtics (thanks to Kevin Garnett’s impressive acting debut). Rapid-fire, moody cinematography embodies the frantic stakes of each scheme, debt, and family drama; while the celebrity cameos of New York circa 2010 and Daniel Lopatin’s atmospheric score add to one of the year’s most satisfying cinematic experiences.

I think the most important discussion about this movie is the journey through the gem. It's still haunting me 2 weeks later

Gemstones are an addiction, especially when you get into rarities as benitoite, grandiderite, blue diamond,,for thousands of years gemstones have held their value,by weight one of the most precious substances on Earth.

Hadn't read the reviews before seeing the film. Adam Sandler is not to my taste generally. Watched the filmmakers on Criterion closet picks and they seemed knowledgeable. Was kind of astounded with the Robert Altman pastiche going on in the film between California Split and Mccabe and Mrs Miller.... and of course the other influences... particularly, of note... pretty certain they lifted the side-girl (can't recall her name) walking away from the cab after arguing with Howard from Adieu Philippine.

Lot of great things about this film, but I didn't get that Howard was an uncut gem, that he had underlying value. He was so selfish, so foolish, so reckless, he only cried for himself, all of his relationships were superficial by his own doing, while the others around him had actual depth and personality. I'm really surprised that this is what they were really trying to convey. So then what did it mean that he went through everything that he did and then he was shot through the head in his moment of triumph? I think these guys are gaslighting us with this claim.
