  • A SONY SLV-740HF VHS VCR brought in for not being able to keep a tape in. It just accepts the tape and then a few seconds later it ejects it back out. found the most likely cause as being a friction clutch being gummed up. Cleaned and re lubed the clutch and now its good as new.

    Great video!
I actually had the complete opposite problem, where it would not eject at all. This was after I took it apart to clean out the one I just purchased. It would try and eject, but wasn't prevented from going out because the door would not open.
You video helped out greatly for me to figure out the issue. I wasn't aware I had to leave the door open while re-attaching the front. Thank you!!!!!

Thank you so much man, bless ya life, I was able to get mine SLV-T2000 to work, and now I have to figure out why it has so much trouble with rewind and why the IR light thing doesn't work. I am still happy for what I've done today.

Thank you. I have a SLV-780HF here with the same transport mechanism. Tape would load but not play. When going into play, there would be a loud "clicking" noise. It turned out to be the slip clutch. The plastic bearing in the center of the clutch (the wheel that you removed that was held by the small plastic clip) had frozen up. A few drops of oil got it freed up and playing again. The problem was probably caused by lack of use rather than worn from too much use.

Older VCR units such as from the 80s and 90s will always have technical problems. I found out later models from 2000-2005 still have good image and are less prone to failure especially since many of these have not been used extensively, since this was the time when people started buying DVD units. In my opinion, go with a JVC or Panasonic made after 2000 that has seen little use, and keep these unplugged while not in use to help the capacitors last longer.

on the pin - I started to put the large white gear on and as I rotated

Thankfully, it didn't destroy the tape I had playing on loop, but I did have to open it up to extract the DVD that was stuck inside - I did consider trying to replace the DVD logic board, but I couldn't find anything that matched the part number :( And without DVD functionality, I couldn't set time or even access settings exclusively for the VCR

Greetings. Any tips for problems like this:
The VCR plays, forward, rewind perfect. All is good.... except when i press eject.
There is a great chance it won't spin the magnetic tape back correct/enough so there is still tape outside the cassette when it drops down the "flap" and ejects the tape = wrinkled tape, or it will get stuck in there.
I have this on a copuple of players. They just seem fine until you try to eject the cassette. I opened one up and can clearly see it is not "spooling" the tape enough/correctly, but i can not see where the issue would be.
    Plz help!

probably the clutch in the center that switches from low torque in the play mode to high torque in the FF-REW/eject position. Also could be a brake not releasing the reel tables at the correct time too.

    Dude, I gotta try this.
I have a VCR of a different model but with the same mechanism that behaves almost the same.
Will report back if it works.
Didn't work, it still gets stuck in the cassette down position.
Do you happen to have a video setting up the timing on this mechanism, including the loading mechanism?
I have the service manual for this mechanism, and I think I have most of the holes aligned in the right way, because when I apply voltage to the loading motor, everything works perfectly fine.
But everything breaks when I put the loading mechanism back on, and the service manual doesn't say much about the loading mechanism.
Ignore that, I think the problem is the gear that connects to the metal slider of the front loading mechanism, some of the teeth are damaged.
Anyone knows the part number or a way to try and fix it?
