Obviously all of this is quite subjective. I do like them. Having said that, I guess there's some truth to the bits about being boring and bloated. I like their first 4 songs of the new album (eden), and the rest I couldn't really listen to. I love the summoning and agree that they could have stretched the first bit a bit more but also love the mixing of different genres and their outro particularly.
Have tried to watch them live twice as well as attempts to listen to the songs on record, they bore the hell out of me, glad they're doing well though but i won't bother again
I like them, but the thing I think I disagree with most on this video is that they should get a producer to significantly alter their output... I'd prefer to hear exactly what an artist is expressing, even if its flawed, than have it altered for mass consumption by an industry doodoohead.

Being a fan of the band as I am (like that meant actually something, I know), you made some valid points that even I have to agree. That won't change the fact that I'm love with them, but I like it when I find some good and well exposed criticism about the things I like. It's the healthiest way to enjoy things, in my opinion. To the pacing part, it reminds me of the description to action ratio that some authors also makes reading absolutely tedious. I had to read Lord of the flies in school and the descriptions to setting the tone was taking about 2/3rds of the chapters sometimes, you could literally skip some descriptive paragraphs and it wouldn't have an influence at all on the plot. Same goes for music, if you can fast forward on atmospheric parts, it's usually not a good sign.
I am not too sure about the average sleep token fan, but my sister who has never shown any interest in metal, no matter how many times i have tried to get her to listen to metal, primarily because it is "too much", started listening to them on her own volition and has grown quite a liking to their music, and is beginning to enjoy the heavier parts of their music. I think that she enjoys them because they provide the heavier parts in very short bursts that arent overwhelming for people who are not used to them but idk that is just my experience. I think it is almost like psychosocial was for me where initially i really liked the clean chorus and would primarily listen to it for that reason but then i found myself slowly starting to love the less clean parts. and now i am a huge fan of the more extreme genres like brutal death and the like.
That's the big takeaway here. My 10 year old niece doesn't like metal at all but she loves Sleep Token. And now she's starting to come around a little bit on other rock and metal stuff. What they are doing for the musical landscape is being a gateway band. And I like that.
Im not a fan of ST but i think theyre mismarketed. Theyre not a metal band. They're an electro/rnb group with metal elements that are easy to digest. And they do have an issue with pacing. I don't think theyre the future of metal, but they may help to ease people into it, which is a plus in my book. Maybe theres a sleep token to animals as leaders to opeth pipeline? Unlikely, but it would be awesome to see metal getting a cultural second wind. I do agree they nailed the custome and lore aspect. I wouldn't be surprised if they're Warhammer fans. They understood that lore can be just as important as the hobby itself ...thats a huge part of what draws people to Warhammer.
the only genre i can really think to classify them as would be alternative metal, because even if they include elements from rnb and "electro" i still think they're definitely closer to metal than those two genres.

I came across their viral part of The Awakening on TikTok a lot. It has a very clear jazz element to it, especially the way the singer uses his voice. I imagined a completely different music than what it actually is as a whole 6.36 min. song. I acknowledge they have a very interesting and intelligent mixture of genres and there’s something ethereal about it. That being said, I fail to see how this could be called metal? There‘s like two tiny breakdowns and a bit of screaming and that‘s it. Makes this whole thing fairly uninteresting to me, but that‘s totally fine. I would categorize them loosely as Alternative.
I’ve tried listening to them 4-5 times and have to say I agree with everything you’ve said. It doesn’t help that I was introduced to opeth at age 12… so the novelty of genre bending and strange song structures is not new to me… so an accessible version of it seems extra boring at this point. I think they should either go heavier or go more pop. The middle ground they’re traversing right now is so so boring. What do I know though, they’re obviously very popular and beloved.
I absolutely love sleep token but i will agree they should push towards one side more and I think they should definitely go heavier and with their new era it seems they are going to do so!
If you like genre-blending, check out Bilmuri. They’re more post-hardcore/pop than metal but I feel like the way that they incorporate different styles of music into their own aids the catchiness of their songs rather than detracting from it
As a fan of Sleep Token, I do have to say you have valid points for constructive criticism. I personally think that they may undoubtedly leave some sort of mark in the metal scene that will likely influence future bands, and I too am looking forward for some change in the monotony of the songs so that they may increment their incredible showmanship. Love your vids!
I like genre-bending bands like Mr. Bungle, Electric Callboy, and Igorrr. These bands excel at making different genres feel cohesive and connected, while Sleep Token sounds like they are stitching together different genres, instead of blending them together in a way that makes sense. Like EC's Paradise in Hell, it starts as a rap song, then pop/electronic, then metalcore, and it all sounds like one song, it all makes sense. Igorrr's Houmous has elements of Italian, Middle Eastern, breakcore, classical, opera, avant-garde, black metal, 8-bit all in under four minutes, and it all just makes sense, it sounds like one song. Sleeptoken is like here's a soft part, an rnb part that has nothing to do with the previous part, and a metal part that has nothing to do with the rest of the song. It feels random and stitched together. Another huge turnoff for me is the vocal production. Too much tuning, when it sounds like he's a good singer, and didn't need much in the first place. I have no problem with vocal tuning unless it's obvious. Also, sometimes the guitars go heavy, and he's singing very softly and doesn't match the aggression, come on, give it some grit and angst, or even better, scream, I know you can. I want to like them, but I just don't. I'm curious to see whether they successfully blend genres together or lay off the vocal tuning in the future.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I think what you said here is why I came to like SOAD as much as I did when I was younger, since it really felt like they were combining music I was familiar with and was expecting with music from their culture that I had never heard before. The best part was that they did it amazingly seamlessly, IMO. Like you said, Sleep Token just kind of mashes random things together for shits and giggles.
I like every band mentioned here and have done for a while... Except Eskimo Callboy. Who sincerely suck. Go check Hyperactive album by One Morning Left or even (going back now) Pedal to the Metal by Blessed by a Broken Heart for something similar but better.

I was one of those guys, I hated on them just because I wanted to not stick out and went with the majority vote. Now they are one of my favourite bands ever. Once I realized that my own taste mattered more than what other people think about a particular band, I felt freedom. And I don't think that the "Worship" thing is more cringe than "In Flames We Trust" or other fanbases' catchphrases, mascots or lores. I remember laughing at the MV of Holy Diver back when I was a dumb kid, but now I am old enough to appreciate the genius of Dio and his influence.

I was unaware of the payoffs. I never made it far enough into one of their songs to experience the metal part. I didn't think it actually existed. Sleep Token is a great sleep aid, so they are aptly named.
I love Sleep Token but I don't mind listening to someone else's opinion even if I don't agree with most of it especially the more hyperbolic takes in the video 😅I'm definitely not always in the mood to listen to them all the time because of the pacing compared to more conventional metal/metalcore music but I think it kinda comes down to how much you enjoy the less metal moments in their music. If you don't like those parts then you're not gonna want to sit and listen to an 8 min song where only part of it is what you enjoy so I get that, just personally myself and many others do like those parts of their songs as well as the more intense parts.

That's not the kind of band sleep Token is and that's OK! Like Take Me Back to Eden is written like a symphony would be written. It had 3 movements, with the same theme. One part is ethereal, the other, hip hoppy and night like and the other, more like a Broadway finale, grandiose, that's what makes it so cool! And the part at the end could have been longer so we can have more II drumming. Y'all just want Sleep Token to be generic and that's not how they roll and that's why I like them so much.

The replies are missing the point here. Opinion is more than just how much you like something, but how you think about it . I still enjoy some of the music, but I no longer think of them as prog gods, ya know
There is the issue that it also is kinda poppy in a way, with those metalcore and RnB elements, but it's not groovy or very hooky for me. If you compare this to for example btbma, which in my opinion combines genres in a really creative way, I feel like it's more diverse and "complex" and it's still way more groovy and catchy. For me at least. The soundscape of sleep token is also very default 2020s, which is also one factor, why it didn't feel like my kind of music.
I think that's probably why others might love them to death. Because people look for different things in music and ST managed to synthesize some elements very well. But they're VERY divisive

But there are sub genres of metal that I don't like especially Western Djent which includes constantly spamming low open strings like a brain-dead patient. I've listened to Japanese and Chinese djent where one doesn't do the same and it sounds so phenomenal.

They are some kind of ambient trap metal hybrid thingy, it's hard to pin down their sound into one genre. But whatever it is, I like it and that's all that matters in the end.

For example, Slipknot is influenced by alternative rock and a pinch of hip-hop as well, and because of that, many metalheads don't consider them "real metal.".

hey andy, if you can manage to separate their current reputation from their older discography you might actually enjoy it. it's well composed and brilliant. that being said i can't tolerate the new album and wish i could go back to a time when their music was a personal experience. it's now just a genre salad of [pop]ular sorts for non-metal people (to each their own though)

I'm glad their stuff is finally getting addressed, I really liked a couple of the earlier releases, but even then you could hear that dull cop out style of writing lyrics, rhyming thesaurus in hand. They do have some songs that are Good as far as I'm concerned, but I do feel like some of their music is trying to hard to be complex that it just comes across as disingenuously complicated.
Shout out to In Absentia and The Raven That Refused To Sing. Those are two of the coolest albums ever. Porcupine Tree's run of albums from Stupid Dream all the way to their latest album is borderline Rush levels of consistent perfection.

I was fortunate enough to meet Steven Wilson at a Newbury Comics in Boston shortly after Raven came out, and he autographed my vinyl copy of the album. Adam Holzman who played keys on the record was there, and he autographed the album as well; truly a masterpiece of contemporary progressive rock.
I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. I couldn't put my finger on exactly what wasn't working for me, but I think you nailed it for me. It's annoyingly boring for how much hype they've received. Also, the progressive subgenre of any major genre should be designed around pushing the boundaries of that genre and I don't feel like smashing genres together in this way is doing that.
I look at them more as a pop group the incorporates metal and other genres into their music. I think they are good for modern metal and to help get people into heavier music. As a big fan of them I don't actually like every one of their songs or think everything they do is beyond everyone else. I think they're very skilled and talented and I'm curious to see more. I can understand why some people don't care for them/certain things they do. Also just because they take what they do seriously doesn't mean they're self important? I guarantee they don't think they're the next "evolution" of metal or music for that matter. I'd be willing to be they're just like most other bands: they got together with a vision for their art and people were attracted to it. They love music and art. Simple as that
While I do agree that their potential has yet to be fulfilled I still like their current sound. I still like "This Place Will Become Your Tomb" better than "Take Me Back to Eden" but not by a whole whole lot. Im excited to see what they do next.
I just don’t think Sleep Token is for you man. As a lover of funeral doom, atmospheric black metal and post metal, who also finds guilty pleasure in djent and pop, Sleep Token is right up my alley, long winding soundscapes and simple but effective harmony, leading to explosions of emotion that still maintains the same sense of space. In my personal opinion, their strongest material is actually from before they went full trap on Take Me Back To Eden, back when even less was going on in the songs, Nazareth, Jericho and When The Bough Breaks are perfect songs in my opinion, and there’s even less going on in them than in the songs on TMBTE. I don’t think they need a Rick Ruben to dumb their songs down, they’re great as they are, The Summoning needs that long ambient break and the funk-down at the end to be special, and I, as well as millions of others clearly enjoyed it. They lavish in atmosphere, and while you may not like it, I think it’s great. If you’re into music with a lot of structural density and things happening all the time, which I am as well, Full of Hell, Knoll, Methwitch and Car Bomb are all great bands that make great music, then maybe Sleep Token just isn’t for you. But I have patience as a listener, and can also appreciate the genius in something simple, Frowning, Holy Fawn, Ahab and Wolves in the Throneroom all manage to capture my heart with their big soundscapes and ebb and flow songwriting, in the same way that Sleep Token does with their more pop and djent oriented timbres, melodies and riffs, imposed on similar structures to the aforementioned. The last thing I would want as a fan of Sleep Token, is a Sleep Token album with the same riffs and hooks built into more conventional ABABCB structures, I think that would make it a very monotonous and boring listen, with the payoffs feeling unearned. I do however agree with you that Take Me Back To Eden will end up aging much worse than for example the EP’s One and Two, due to the overuse of trap elements.

@@takentactus8779I don’t hate sleep token, but Metallica and Sleep Token can’t be compared on any level. Metallica wasn’t just relevant in the 80’s. They technically didn’t even hit their most successful point in their career until 1991/1992 and they are more relevant today than ever before with every generation bringing in millions and millions of new fans. They are literally one of the biggest bands to ever exist. It’s possible that in 30 years people might say “hey, do you remember Sleep Token?” But no one will ever have to ask someone if they remember Metallica.
You articulated how I feel better than I could have, I agree there were a lot of "moments" on this album that were way cool but after a couple listens I got bored and forgot about it.
I believe in this era people take music way too seriously. And pigeon hole artist to a point they can only sound one kind of way with little breathing room. I appreciate ST for having a different dynamic. Having the creative freedom to sound however they want. It's okay to not like a band, but now everyone is a top tier music critic with the most singular and vague criticisms that frankly don't make any sense.

Yeah that's what I find disappointing about modern day music. People, especially metalheads I find a lot of the time, are afraid of change. A lot of them want their genre to stay in its own lane and not stretch out so that it doesn't get boring. Which, in my opinion, makes it the most boring piece of garbage you can make. A lot of bands my metal head friends recommend to me just sound so cookie cutter nowadays because they are afraid to branch out into new styles, and I just get bored of it. Which is why I like some of the stuff published by Napalm Records so much. Dwarf metal? Hell yeah. I'll put on some Wind Rose. Pirate metal? Sounds weird, but it's executed great by Alestorm. They're great, because they don't take themselves seriously, they just have pure childish fun.
@@VoidHxnter Yeah you have a point with that I find a lot of older Blind Guardian fans hate their newer albums because it became more symphonic and progressive while newer fans hate the newest album because it goes back to their thrash/speed metal roots. People hate change and that is pretty sad, personally I love the way Blind Guardian evolved unafraid to change their approach to music. And my other favourite band Lord Of The Lost literally changes genre and look every album I once met someone that didn't like their Blood and Glitter album so I told him to listen to the more dark and atmospheric Judas album instead and he liked that one much better. I have my prefrences with bands I will not deny that but I do so love the change that some of my favourite bands dare to do.
I'm with you, they COULD be amazing. Either the next album is going to slay, or the band that comes after them that is influenced by them will really refine the sound.
They could 'be amazing' for you and Bradley but then they definitely wouldn't be as popular as they have become. The truth is Bradley's opinion is the minority opinion, and realistically Sleep Token will continue to succeed until music evolves yet again. More and more bands will emerge at the top that don't follow the rules and guidelines that Bradley enjoys and he will continue to make videos like this citing his disappointment, mostly in himself for being unable to understand what the allure is. It's the inevitable fate of getting old and becoming cranky that we all face.

I certainly understand why some of them usually don't give a damn or are too old that it's just become the norm to hate on trends or popular things. what I find rarely though are people that are both honest and open-minded about it, and at the very least Bradley stands his ground and doesn't demean the topic at hand. because usually in videos like these I'll run into people who can't seem to just tune out when something they don't like comes along, or seemingly just... go on about their day and not let this stuff live in their head rent-free. I feel that the division between communities even got stronger as of currently because people can't seem to understand things change, things stagnate, and in their words "sell out". I appreciate the person that's firm and honest about their opinion, but I certainly abhor the type of people that hate just because they're not some underground thing or because the stuff someone make panders to... what I'd quote as "sheep" or some goofy insult. you're right about the band getting more popular as people check their stuff out, but if this were someone else they'd certainly take advantage of the bad publicity and surf over the minority group, then slide into the hands of the pleased masses. I know for a fact life isn't black and white, but I feel like I'm stuck in a timeloop where you do one thing and set someone off, and do what they want and piss someone off as well -- do something right and someone will call you out on your wrongs, really hard to take your cake and eat it both ways when everybody's got things that make pleasing them a challenge. I agree at some points, especially on the melodramatic boredom that some Songs create. They just need a little kick from a good Producer and they would blow up even more. My favourites are Songs like Vore or the Offering.
Rick Rubin could possibly do them good then. He won't record a track until he's convinced it's as well written as it can be (most of the time, but everyone has the odd miss)

I'm seeing a common ground between all the people who are worked up about Sleep Token. They're all strictly metal heads. Big hair, black graphic tees. Most of his video is just him being mad he has to wait a couple minutes for his serotonin rush. He's cool about it though, so no hate.
It's exactly because you are someone who likes a wide range of music.... Sleep Token are really good at what they do but the second they were mis-labelled as a metal band, they were always going to be seen as a threat by some. This very video mentions "the future of metal" as if Sleep Token are going to take over and metal as we know it will no longer exist but that's obviously not going to happen.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get the hype. Was considering seeing them at Bloodstock in 2022, listened to them beforehand, and decided not to bother.
Bradley just curious what your thoughts are on Periphery? I saw the 2 being compared and couldn't believe it as a fan of Periphery but not ST, don't think they have many similarities.
Sleep Token has a little bit of djent influence and Periphery's vocalist, Spencer, has a little bit of R&B influence. That's it. I'd say ST is closer to something like VOLA. They also give off a similar vibe to Deftones and other alt metal bands. Periphery takes the more mathcore-ish side of prog, like Sikth and Protest the Hero.

Ah, Sleep Token, the sort of band I love, right up until I unmute. All I'm saying is that if you go on dating apps and see interests = metal, then scroll down and see Sleep Token, that's an easier left swipe than "oh I just want to buy a camper van and be as far from a flushing toilet as possible". Like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber though, I can only have huge respect for them: if you can be this successful, without actually producing anything good, you are clearly a business genius. Potentially a musical one too, these people are all very talented, it's just that the music they publicly release is garbage... It's music for the same people who want to be "nerds" yet have literally no idea what that means. "Oh I listen to metal" - do you now. I'm no elitist, you listen to what you like, but you do at least have to be able to justify that you even really like it for a reason other than "I like other people seeing me like it" which is all Sleep Token are. That said, I kinda like the 2 tracks Korn did with Skrillex, so I'll accept that my opinion is pretty much invalid.
Not gonna lie, Brad's right on this one. Had a phase for Sleep Token, worship and stuff but lately I don't come back to listen to them that often anymore. Instead I'm going more for Dream Theater instead if I want some progressive goodiness. What can I add? He said everything. as an insufferable sleep token stan, there are things i agree with you on lol when i write music i often make sections i think sound great but then unknowingly drag them out too long. Then when i have a full listen through after X hours of recording, editing, and rough mixing i sit back, grab my beer and have a full listen through. And only then do i realize that said section is too long. Then i have to go in and delete that section and fix the transition. This is something that I think Sleep Token needs. I agree that sometimes their sections are too dragged out like the interlude before "The Summoning" ending is also just like, why so long, 8 bars would have been fine i dont know why you needed 32. Still this doesnt change my love for them lmao

I don't agree with you in some things but that's the point, since music is so relative, all opinions (that have common sense) help us have variations. I love they don't sound like 90% of other metal bands, but I do agree they can improve in songwriting. Great video and really funny in some parts. Keep up the good work!

For genre blending bands I'm more keen on Diablo Swing Orchestra personally, very eclectic but always fun can only describe them as a mix of swing, symphonic metal, progressive rock and countless other things. Hard to pin down!
My take isnt quite as harsh but in most of their songs I do feel that they have building blocks of some fantastic songs, but the execution is a bit off or compositional choices are just made that diminish what otherwise could've been an even better song. I do enjoy their music but they have room to improve.

That's something I see a lot of people saying, and is a huge misconception a lot of metalheads have about the band. They're not "metal" per-se, they just have metal elements. Sorry to hear you were deceived a little.
Would be interesting to watch, rn i think ghost is doing that job in a huge way, their last show i assisted was so full of teenagers i legitimately felt like a boomer for the first time in a show. And speaking with some of those kids, they're eager to listen to recommendations of heavier stuff they can sink their teeth into. Then again, i haven't got much into st, they bored me a bit by taking themselves way too seriously so i just forgot they existed, guess I'll have to revisit them now.

I do like them. Having said that, I guess there's some truth to the bits about being boring and bloated. I like their first 4 songs of the new album (eden), and the rest I couldn't really listen to.
I love the summoning and agree that they could have stretched the first bit a bit more but also love the mixing of different genres and their outro particularly.
Have tried to watch them live twice as well as attempts to listen to the songs on record, they bore the hell out of me, glad they're doing well though but i won't bother again
I like them, but the thing I think I disagree with most on this video is that they should get a producer to significantly alter their output... I'd prefer to hear exactly what an artist is expressing, even if its flawed, than have it altered for mass consumption by an industry doodoohead.

To the pacing part, it reminds me of the description to action ratio that some authors also makes reading absolutely tedious. I had to read Lord of the flies in school and the descriptions to setting the tone was taking about 2/3rds of the chapters sometimes, you could literally skip some descriptive paragraphs and it wouldn't have an influence at all on the plot. Same goes for music, if you can fast forward on atmospheric parts, it's usually not a good sign.

I am not too sure about the average sleep token fan, but my sister who has never shown any interest in metal, no matter how many times i have tried to get her to listen to metal, primarily because it is "too much", started listening to them on her own volition and has grown quite a liking to their music, and is beginning to enjoy the heavier parts of their music. I think that she enjoys them because they provide the heavier parts in very short bursts that arent overwhelming for people who are not used to them but idk that is just my experience. I think it is almost like psychosocial was for me where initially i really liked the clean chorus and would primarily listen to it for that reason but then i found myself slowly starting to love the less clean parts. and now i am a huge fan of the more extreme genres like brutal death and the like.
That's the big takeaway here. My 10 year old niece doesn't like metal at all but she loves Sleep Token. And now she's starting to come around a little bit on other rock and metal stuff. What they are doing for the musical landscape is being a gateway band. And I like that.

I came across their viral part of The Awakening on TikTok a lot. It has a very clear jazz element to it, especially the way the singer uses his voice. I imagined a completely different music than what it actually is as a whole 6.36 min. song. I acknowledge they have a very interesting and intelligent mixture of genres and there’s something ethereal about it. That being said, I fail to see how this could be called metal? There‘s like two tiny breakdowns and a bit of screaming and that‘s it. Makes this whole thing fairly uninteresting to me, but that‘s totally fine. I would categorize them loosely as Alternative.

I’ve tried listening to them 4-5 times and have to say I agree with everything you’ve said. It doesn’t help that I was introduced to opeth at age 12… so the novelty of genre bending and strange song structures is not new to me… so an accessible version of it seems extra boring at this point. I think they should either go heavier or go more pop. The middle ground they’re traversing right now is so so boring. What do I know though, they’re obviously very popular and beloved.

As a fan of Sleep Token, I do have to say you have valid points for constructive criticism. I personally think that they may undoubtedly leave some sort of mark in the metal scene that will likely influence future bands, and I too am looking forward for some change in the monotony of the songs so that they may increment their incredible showmanship. This whole video is a ploy to make us think Bradley isn’t secretly all of the members of Sleep Token. You ain’t fooling me.
I like genre-bending bands like Mr. Bungle, Electric Callboy, and Igorrr. These bands excel at making different genres feel cohesive and connected, while Sleep Token sounds like they are stitching together different genres, instead of blending them together in a way that makes sense. Like EC's Paradise in Hell, it starts as a rap song, then pop/electronic, then metalcore, and it all sounds like one song, it all makes sense. Igorrr's Houmous has elements of Italian, Middle Eastern, breakcore, classical, opera, avant-garde, black metal, 8-bit all in under four minutes, and it all just makes sense, it sounds like one song. Sleeptoken is like here's a soft part, an rnb part that has nothing to do with the previous part, and a metal part that has nothing to do with the rest of the song. It feels random and stitched together.
Another huge turnoff for me is the vocal production. Too much tuning, when it sounds like he's a good singer, and didn't need much in the first place. I have no problem with vocal tuning unless it's obvious. Also, sometimes the guitars go heavy, and he's singing very softly and doesn't match the aggression, come on, give it some grit and angst, or even better, scream, I know you can.
I want to like them, but I just don't. I'm curious to see whether they successfully blend genres together or lay off the vocal tuning in the future.
Couldn't have said it better myself. I think what you said here is why I came to like SOAD as much as I did when I was younger, since it really felt like they were combining music I was familiar with and was expecting with music from their culture that I had never heard before. The best part was that they did it amazingly seamlessly, IMO. Like you said, Sleep Token just kind of mashes random things together for shits and giggles.

And I don't think that the "Worship" thing is more cringe than "In Flames We Trust" or other fanbases' catchphrases, mascots or lores. I remember laughing at the MV of Holy Diver back when I was a dumb kid, but now I am old enough to appreciate the genius of Dio and his influence.

I love Sleep Token but I don't mind listening to someone else's opinion even if I don't agree with most of it especially the more hyperbolic takes in the video 😅I'm definitely not always in the mood to listen to them all the time because of the pacing compared to more conventional metal/metalcore music but I think it kinda comes down to how much you enjoy the less metal moments in their music. If you don't like those parts then you're not gonna want to sit and listen to an 8 min song where only part of it is what you enjoy so I get that, just personally myself and many others do like those parts of their songs as well as the more intense parts.

That's not the kind of band sleep Token is and that's OK! Like Take Me Back to Eden is written like a symphony would be written. It had 3 movements, with the same theme. One part is ethereal, the other, hip hoppy and night like and the other, more like a Broadway finale, grandiose, that's what makes it so cool! And the part at the end could have been longer so we can have more II drumming. Y'all just want Sleep Token to be generic and that's not how they roll and that's why I like them so much.

The first word that came to mind when I tried to listen to their new album is Imagine Dragons metal.
There is the issue that it also is kinda poppy in a way, with those metalcore and RnB elements, but it's not groovy or very hooky for me. If you compare this to for example btbma, which in my opinion combines genres in a really creative way, I feel like it's more diverse and "complex" and it's still way more groovy and catchy. For me at least. The soundscape of sleep token is also very default 2020s, which is also one factor, why it didn't feel like my kind of music.

hey andy, if you can manage to separate their current reputation from their older discography you might actually enjoy it. it's well composed and brilliant. that being said i can't tolerate the new album and wish i could go back to a time when their music was a personal experience. it's now just a genre salad of [pop]ular sorts for non-metal people (to each their own though)

I'm glad their stuff is finally getting addressed, I really liked a couple of the earlier releases, but even then you could hear that dull cop out style of writing lyrics, rhyming thesaurus in hand. They do have some songs that are Good as far as I'm concerned, but I do feel like some of their music is trying to hard to be complex that it just comes across as disingenuously complicated.

I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. I couldn't put my finger on exactly what wasn't working for me, but I think you nailed it for me. It's annoyingly boring for how much hype they've received. Also, the progressive subgenre of any major genre should be designed around pushing the boundaries of that genre and I don't feel like smashing genres together in this way is doing that.
I look at them more as a pop group the incorporates metal and other genres into their music. I think they are good for modern metal and to help get people into heavier music. As a big fan of them I don't actually like every one of their songs or think everything they do is beyond everyone else. I think they're very skilled and talented and I'm curious to see more. I can understand why some people don't care for them/certain things they do. Also just because they take what they do seriously doesn't mean they're self important? I guarantee they don't think they're the next "evolution" of metal or music for that matter. I'd be willing to be they're just like most other bands: they got together with a vision for their art and people were attracted to it. They love music and art. Simple as that
While I do agree that their potential has yet to be fulfilled I still like their current sound. I still like "This Place Will Become Your Tomb" better than "Take Me Back to Eden" but not by a whole whole lot. Im excited to see what they do next.

As someone that never heard sleep token, I agree with you.
I just don’t think Sleep Token is for you man. As a lover of funeral doom, atmospheric black metal and post metal, who also finds guilty pleasure in djent and pop, Sleep Token is right up my alley, long winding soundscapes and simple but effective harmony, leading to explosions of emotion that still maintains the same sense of space. In my personal opinion, their strongest material is actually from before they went full trap on Take Me Back To Eden, back when even less was going on in the songs, Nazareth, Jericho and When The Bough Breaks are perfect songs in my opinion, and there’s even less going on in them than in the songs on TMBTE. I don’t think they need a Rick Ruben to dumb their songs down, they’re great as they are, The Summoning needs that long ambient break and the funk-down at the end to be special, and I, as well as millions of others clearly enjoyed it.
They lavish in atmosphere, and while you may not like it, I think it’s great.
If you’re into music with a lot of structural density and things happening all the time, which I am as well, Full of Hell, Knoll, Methwitch and Car Bomb are all great bands that make great music, then maybe Sleep Token just isn’t for you. But I have patience as a listener, and can also appreciate the genius in something simple, Frowning, Holy Fawn, Ahab and Wolves in the Throneroom all manage to capture my heart with their big soundscapes and ebb and flow songwriting, in the same way that Sleep Token does with their more pop and djent oriented timbres, melodies and riffs, imposed on similar structures to the aforementioned.
The last thing I would want as a fan of Sleep Token, is a Sleep Token album with the same riffs and hooks built into more conventional ABABCB structures, I think that would make it a very monotonous and boring listen, with the payoffs feeling unearned.
I do however agree with you that Take Me Back To Eden will end up aging much worse than for example the EP’s One and Two, due to the overuse of trap elements.

They technically didn’t even hit their most successful point in their career until 1991/1992 and they are more relevant today than ever before with every generation bringing in millions and millions of new fans. They are literally one of the biggest bands to ever exist. It’s possible that in 30 years people might say “hey, do you remember Sleep Token?” But no one will ever have to ask someone if they remember Metallica.
To me, this sound reminds me of festival electronica like Porter Robinson and Illenium, which I love❤

I believe in this era people take music way too seriously. And pigeon hole artist to a point they can only sound one kind of way with little breathing room. I appreciate ST for having a different dynamic. Having the creative freedom to sound however they want. It's okay to not like a band, but now everyone is a top tier music critic with the most singular and vague criticisms that frankly don't make any sense.
You have a point, but i think people also MAKE music too serious nowadays. I miss bands that didn't take themselves that seriously.

Yeah that's what I find disappointing about modern day music. People, especially metalheads I find a lot of the time, are afraid of change. A lot of them want their genre to stay in its own lane and not stretch out so that it doesn't get boring. Which, in my opinion, makes it the most boring piece of garbage you can make. A lot of bands my metal head friends recommend to me just sound so cookie cutter nowadays because they are afraid to branch out into new styles, and I just get bored of it. Which is why I like some of the stuff published by Napalm Records so much. Dwarf metal? Hell yeah. I'll put on some Wind Rose. Pirate metal? Sounds weird, but it's executed great by Alestorm. They're great, because they don't take themselves seriously, they just have pure childish fun.
@@VoidHxnter Yeah you have a point with that I find a lot of older Blind Guardian fans hate their newer albums because it became more symphonic and progressive while newer fans hate the newest album because it goes back to their thrash/speed metal roots. People hate change and that is pretty sad, personally I love the way Blind Guardian evolved unafraid to change their approach to music. And my other favourite band Lord Of The Lost literally changes genre and look every album I once met someone that didn't like their Blood and Glitter album so I told him to listen to the more dark and atmospheric Judas album instead and he liked that one much better. I have my prefrences with bands I will not deny that but I do so love the change that some of my favourite bands dare to do.
I'm with you, they COULD be amazing. Either the next album is going to slay, or the band that comes after them that is influenced by them will really refine the sound.
They could 'be amazing' for you and Bradley but then they definitely wouldn't be as popular as they have become. The truth is Bradley's opinion is the minority opinion, and realistically Sleep Token will continue to succeed until music evolves yet again. More and more bands will emerge at the top that don't follow the rules and guidelines that Bradley enjoys and he will continue to make videos like this citing his disappointment, mostly in himself for being unable to understand what the allure is.
It's the inevitable fate of getting old and becoming cranky that we all face.

because usually in videos like these I'll run into people who can't seem to just tune out when something they don't like comes along, or seemingly just... go on about their day and not let this stuff live in their head rent-free. I feel that the division between communities even got stronger as of currently because people can't seem to understand things change, things stagnate, and in their words "sell out". I appreciate the person that's firm and honest about their opinion, but I certainly abhor the type of people that hate just because they're not some underground thing or because the stuff someone make panders to... what I'd quote as "sheep" or some goofy insult.

I know for a fact life isn't black and white, but I feel like I'm stuck in a timeloop where you do one thing and set someone off, and do what they want and piss someone off as well -- do something right and someone will call you out on your wrongs, really hard to take your cake and eat it both ways when everybody's got things that make pleasing them a challenge. I'd like to be proven wrong though, I just don't know how people manage to put up with stuff like this and still succeed somehow
I agree at some points, especially on the melodramatic boredom that some Songs create. They just need a little kick from a good Producer and they would blow up even more. My favourites are Songs like Vore or the Offering.
Rick Rubin could possibly do them good then. He won't record a track until he's convinced it's as well written as it can be (most of the time, but everyone has the odd miss)

Sleep Token are really good at what they do but the second they were mis-labelled as a metal band, they were always going to be seen as a threat by some. This very video mentions "the future of metal" as if Sleep Token are going to take over and metal as we know it will no longer exist but that's obviously not going to happen.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get the hype. Was considering seeing them at Bloodstock in 2022, listened to them beforehand, and decided not to bother.

Bradley just curious what your thoughts are on Periphery? I saw the 2 being compared and couldn't believe it as a fan of Periphery but not ST, don't think they have many similarities.
Sleep Token has a little bit of djent influence and Periphery's vocalist, Spencer, has a little bit of R&B influence. That's it.
I'd say ST is closer to something like VOLA. They also give off a similar vibe to Deftones and other alt metal bands. Periphery takes the more mathcore-ish side of prog, like Sikth and Protest the Hero.

Like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber though, I can only have huge respect for them: if you can be this successful, without actually producing anything good, you are clearly a business genius. Potentially a musical one too, these people are all very talented, it's just that the music they publicly release is garbage...

@ghuldorgrey It has metal influences but not that many. That's why we could call it alternative/progressive metal in this case. It's same case with Muse. Muse is not exactly rock to speak.They experiment so much that I can't call them rock. But alt/prog rock is good genre to describe them.

when i write music i often make sections i think sound great but then unknowingly drag them out too long. Then when i have a full listen through after X hours of recording, editing, and rough mixing i sit back, grab my beer and have a full listen through. And only then do i realize that said section is too long. Then i have to go in and delete that section and fix the transition. This is something that I think Sleep Token needs. I agree that sometimes their sections are too dragged out like the interlude before "The Summoning" ending is also just like, why so long, 8 bars would have been fine i dont know why you needed 32.

For genre blending bands I'm more keen on Diablo Swing Orchestra personally, very eclectic but always fun can only describe them as a mix of swing, symphonic metal, progressive rock and countless other things. Hard to pin down!

My take isnt quite as harsh but in most of their songs I do feel that they have building blocks of some fantastic songs, but the execution is a bit off or compositional choices are just made that diminish what otherwise could've been an even better song. I do enjoy their music but they have room to improve.

I gave Sleep Token a try because I was excited about a new metal band. They are not for me, however, it will turn a generation of 13 year old girls into metalheads.
my sister who has never enjoyed metal in the slightest loves them to death and enjoys the more metal parts quite a bit, even though initially she only like the clean parts.
That's something I see a lot of people saying, and is a huge misconception a lot of metalheads have about the band. They're not "metal" per-se, they just have metal elements. Sorry to hear you were deceived a little.
Would be interesting to watch, rn i think ghost is doing that job in a huge way, their last show i assisted was so full of teenagers i legitimately felt like a boomer for the first time in a show.
And speaking with some of those kids, they're eager to listen to recommendations of heavier stuff they can sink their teeth into.
Then again, i haven't got much into st, they bored me a bit by taking themselves way too seriously so i just forgot they existed, guess I'll have to revisit them now.
