    Hi Ralfy, greetings from Finland! How nice to see you review a Finnish whisky. I had no idea we can actually make decent whisky here. I'm glad you like it! Btw. Teerenpeli is the Finnish word for the mating game of the black grouse. Kippis!

    While Finnish summers are short, the sun is in the sky much longer then, and the plants get much more light while growing. This is why while Finns usually don't get harvest as often as southern countries, the quality of the harvest can be much better. Plants like new potatoes and strawberries are much more sweeter. I expect that it's the same with barley.

      . . . I agree with your perspective, barley will probably be fuller-flavoured.

    Considering that Teerenpeli started in -95 as a small brewery and bar, expanding to restaurant and distillery business in -02, a very young distillery in a very expensive country, it does produce very high quality beer and whisky, verily because of the hands-on approach.

    Good work on the pronounciation and a fantastic video. Thank you Ralfy!
    Teerenpeli: "Tee" like the ai in air with a t in front or "tear" I guess, Ren like wren, the bird. Peli like welly.
    I think I'll try Teerenpeli in Beerhunters this weekend. Cheers!

    This one sounds lovely, Ralfy. I'll try to get hold of a bottle when when I go to Finland next year. And I am looking forward to the first Ralfy review of a Norwegian single malt! There's only one at the market yet, a three year old called "Audny", but quite decent considering the very young age. Serge gave 75 points May 3rd this year.

    Hi Ralfy. nice change-up stuff.
    re. locality, I think one of the earlier comments said it best since local whiskies here in the US vary minimally & at a snails pace from state to state. & mostly the usual suspects.
    The online-buys are the only sure way to find (esp Finland) the goodens!
    cheers

    Hi Ralfy. Thanks for reviewing a finnish whisky. Actually i just tried this one a few days ago but didnt like it too much. It was a bit raw or young. Teerenpeli just launched their newest product named Teerenpeli Kaski, Distillers choice. Compared to the 8yo, i liked Kaski very much. It is much more sherryed, charged and the aftertaste reminds me from Glenfarclas family cask sherried whisky. Only problem again is that it costs £56/50cl
    Anyway, thanks again for the review,greetings from Finland

    Thanks for reviewing this, I saw a bottle in the local alcohol store, but honestly I didn't think we Finns would be up for the task of creating a decent competetive whisky. Clearly a bad idea in retrospect! I'll be sure to give this a chance.

    I love the growing season here except spring continues to annoy me. It was what, three weeks late this year? (spring and autumn in Finland are about two hours long with a six-month summer and winter)
    We set our tomato, tomatillo, jalapeño and habanero seeds germinating too early indoors this year so we were tapping our feet waiting for temps to go up. When we get it right though we get huge crops of fruit from the 24hr sunshine.
    Terve Porista, Ross!

  • @UnclePutte
    @UnclePutte Před 9 lety +11

    Hunh. Funny bit of trivia - "Teerenpeli" translates roughly to "The Black Grouse's Game", in reference to... well, mating rituals. All in reference to the maker being a bar, I'm sure.
    How come grouses are so big on whiskey, now?

  • @Ex0rz

    Making whisky requires patience and its good that Teerenpeli had it. Now they got a reputation for good quality whisky. If you rush a bad whisky to the market, whose gonna buy your further bottlings?

  • @TristanJCumpole

    Funny thing Ralfy. Here in Finland we can't take our business into the High Street on the basis that alcohol over 4,7% is sold primarily through the government-controlled franchise "Alko". Here we either buy at the bar (I have to mention the exceptional Beerhunters in Pori here), select from the narrow range at Alko or go on a cruise to Tallinn/Stockholm.
    Only this morning I ordered online from Master Of Malt because it is cheaper for us to do so that way, plus they have an excellent range.

    Have your ever tasted the german Glen Els from the Harz Mountains? Tastiest german whisky I've had so far and usually bottled at cask strength - which is actually 45-50% as they claim to have an angel's share of 4-10% due to the weather conditions... anyway, good stuff. Although again with a high price tag compared to scotch whisky.

    Have you ever tried or looked for Tasmanian Whisky? There is 9 distilleries in Tasmania and the leader IMHO in Australian Whisky particularly for boutique. Look for Lark, Overreem(my personal fav), Sullivans Cove, Hellyers Road, Nant, William McHenry & Sons, Trappers Hut, Heartwood, Cradle Mountain.

    Good advice about buying locally, but sadly that's not an option here in Germany (and probably most other non-british countries). Here we only have supermarkets which sell the very cheap mainstream stuff (JW, Jack, Jim, Irish blends) and extremely few specialist liquor stores. But we do have some very excellent online stores specialised on whisky!

  • @ArumesYT
    @ArumesYT Před 11 lety

    About the 43%: I'm sure you're right that it would benefit from a stronger bottling, but you said that the distillery is part of a restaurant. They probably want the whisky to be easily servable, which means means they want it to be at its best without adding water. Just an idea...

    I guessing from one of the comments below that the stuff is 65 quid a bottle ? That`s seems a lot of money especially as it`s only a 50 cl, I`m assuming it`s mainly because as you say there is only 30,000 bottles produced each year

  • @Malt454
    @Malt454 Před 11 lety

    Thanks for the reply. Maybe this isn't at the point of a Mackmyra or Kilchoman, but a full-sized 700ml bottle would be the equivalent of £90 ($137.65 USD), for an 8-year old that just breaks 90/100, and £65 for 500ml is equivalent to the price for 700ml of the cask-strength Ardbeg Corryvreckan. I don't support "whisky nationality profiling", or prejudice, on any level - just trying to add some perspective. Cheers!

    The origin of the name 'Teerenpeli': Teeri is a bird (Black grouse, Lyrurus tetrix, lives in northern europe)
    Teerenpeli = flirtation/dalliance, when these birds try to get laid :) Also commonly used with human 'interactions' too, if you know what I mean :)

  • @Malt454
    @Malt454 Před 11 lety

    Maybe he’s just looking at value vs. price. A lot of start-ups (Glen Breton, Mackmyra, Kilchoman), while serviceable, like to price position themselves as established premium brands on the basis of rarity, collectability or an inflated estimate of quality to offset their initial investment - and their balance sheet really isn't the customer's problem.

    Let me consult the Alko price list. Let's see....
    Lagavulin 16yo
    Alko - €73 (£63,62)
    Master Of Malt - €50,86 (£43,23)
    That's almost a difference of a bottle of Highland Park 12yo.

    Don't see anything narrow-minded about questioning the price/value ratio of a product. In fact, it's a necessity given today's whisky market. Unless, of course, you're independently wealthy. If you happen to fall into that category, please send me an independent bottling of 25+ year old Caol Ila. Cheers!

    Do not try James Bentley whisky from Bluestill in New South Wales Aus. On the bottle it says 'matured in French oak'. I rang and spoke to Steve the manager there and he said they don't use barrels 'because no one does these days' - they use bags of Hungarian oak chips. When I emailed later they said that they had said on the 'phone that the Hungarian oak chips were a 'trial'. Sure....right. Said it tasted like Chivas. Well it is foul crap in my opinion.
