  • When Ott Tänak and Raigo Mõlder plunged the car into a Mexican lake in 2015, it was assumed their rally was over. However, M-Sport Ford managing director Malcolm Wilson had other thoughts...

The WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers battle on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat! Watch high speed action as the rally drivers power slide and drift round narrow corners, go flat out over a big jump or through a watersplash, handbrake turn round a hairpin, survive a big moment, or have a massive crash! Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
Each rally has timed sections called special stages, on closed roads. Drivers complete these stages as quickly as possible. A co-driver reads pace notes that explain the hazards ahead. Rally drivers use the same rally car to travel to each stage on public roads, following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. Championship points are won using the same scoring system as Formula 1. The championship is administered by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body.
Over 30 countries have hosted WRC rallies. Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Tour de Corse on Corsica, France, Rally Sardegna on Sardinia, Italy, Safari Rally in Kenya, Acropolis Rally in Greece, Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, Rally Japan, Rally GB, Rally Catalunya, Rallye Deutschland, Rally Mexico and many more.
Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. The list of world rally champions includes many Finnish rally drivers like Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm, Hannu Mikkola. French drivers have had success with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times world champion Sébastien Loeb. Famous drivers from other motorsports have come to try rally driving like Ken Block from Rallycross, and Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1.
Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers awarded to the most successful WRC constructor. Winners include Citroen, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Ford have had success with the Ford Escort, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta when the M-Sport team won in 2017.
The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018. Hyundai won in 2019 and 2020 with the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. Find out about the latest winners and champions at www.wrc.com

There was two of us in the car, my passenger managed to open her door, I got out by breaking the sliding mechanism of the door glass.
I thought I was brilliant getting the car back on the road in 5 weeks. Remember, a 1970 mini has no electronics, in fact minimal electrics and is pretty simple mechanically.

Sinking to the bottom of 15 feet of murky water in full motocross gear was a new found experience, one ill never want to have again. Thankfully crowd jumped in and 10 sets of hands were pulling me up and out coughing up water and all. Next thing I knew theres a rope in the water and people are pulling my bike out with MANY ropes and chains some with hooks on ends?
It was then I realized as the crowd was methodically flipping my bike upside down and pulling the spark plug....They had all seen this before, I WAS THE ENTERTAINMENT!
They were waiting for this...lol. This was why 200 people were at this random crossing in the middle of nowhere...and I totally hit the jackpot button for them.

I drive a simple 2017 Fiesta Mk7 SE hatch, in Blue Candy Metallic Tri-Coat! The one with the DCT/TCM people love to hate. Mine works properly at 80k. It wants to be driven hard, and the shift forks need cleaning at the actuators every 50k miles, with a clutch job every 150, depending which clutches you use. I actually love it. It's fun to play with. It's like I have a paddle shifter, except it's +/- thumb buttons on an auto selector. In heavy traffic, I even use neutral. It shifts fast as lightning, when my timing is good. Sometimes I pretend I'm on a rally stage, when I'm in an empty area...Except not even half as fast. My Mk7 doesn't rip like an M-Sport WRC car. SHE GOES GOOD, even without a turbo, and feels like the electronically controlled manual transmission that it is. I love manuals. I'm a fan of engine braking, and actually feeling each gear I use. Automatics that are really manuals...I'm IN! ..Even with Ford's terrible history with the PowerShift. I still have hope for the DPS6. ....MAYBE I'm weird, but I still love it.... I'm a stage 3b lung cancer survivor at age 50. I have a massive bucket list. I have dreams of doing some sanctioned amateur rallying, in a Mk7 manual Fiesta😄

I knew a kid who drove too fast through a deep puddle and swamped his motor, the insurance company wrote the car off, no damage to the interior or bodywork, the engine just needed to be drained and flushed with diesel and fresh fluids put in it, no chance they said the labour costs made it impossible,

Tanak has always been a very fast driver and he still a very fast driver. If he was still racing with TGR, he maybe be fighting for his 4th championship so he always trying be fast and he can crash. This accident was the result of one of his efforts to be faster. Never stop trying to be faster TANAK.

The TiTanak incident is one that will go down in history, I'll be honest that season I didn't think Ott would be back as he was hardly showing that well, look at him go now! Shows how wrong you can be :)
