Meet Tawanda Suessbrich-Joaquim - Tawanda, for short. She's the winner of the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition - and as soon as you hear her sing, you'll understand why. Here's our take on the 1977 Fleetwood Mac classic, "The Chain," with a homage to the iconic work of '70s jazz legends like Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard and others.

One of the most daring interpretations PMJ have done and it is beautiful. Musically brilliant and Tawanda’s voice is pure heaven. Thank you to all involved.
It's pretty rare to have artists go this far out and still have it work. This works. PMJ is a rare and beautiful thing.
Yes ~ so refreshing after the grunge--y 90s .
"Daring" why? Cuz shes black? If so, you're nuts. Just say the covers good. That is what postmodern is about. Quit being dumb and just let people do their thing.
I agree
Welcome back to the phenomenal sounds of some of the greatest voices and musicians assembled. Another winner yall.
First comment btw!
@@zcarter80 yay! what did you win?
Well said!👌
Not many get to be hugely famous. But many more get to be very talented and hugely entertaining.
100% agree. An aggregate of phenomenal artists who are musically and instrumentally sound. Gives me hope in this musical era in which we currently live. I was born in 62 so I know good music... And this is good music!!
wow.....what a voice. Invokes a smokey jazz club on a cold rainy night.
With a cocktail in hand and a toe tapping..
Can we talk about Jacob's flute playing for a minute? Absolutely magnificent!
It's like it dropped down from the heavens
👍
😆
Amazing: Not just a reinterpretation of an already-great song, but an entirely new creation.
Tawanda’s voice is absolutely amazing, hauntingly beautiful! and the flute is EVERYTHING❤ I want more of this style and more of Tawanda please! 😊
Loved when that flute kicked in!
And agree what a voice!
Needed more flute !
Same!! Plus love her look and scat style.
Oxford defines "Torch Song" as a sad or sentimental song, typically about unrequited love. Leave it to our time-traveling minstrels to recognize Stevie’s lyrics for what they really are. "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again" sounds unrequited to me, and with her beautiful, velvety voice, Tawanda takes us on a whole new journey. Smooth and smoky, this PMJ quintet has created a torchy masterpiece! May the chain never end. Thanks for this wonderful holiday gift!
LOVE the blue notes, improvisation, and creative freedom…Well done, Tawanda and gentlemen! THIS one makes us ‘sit down and listen’! 👏 👍💖🎶
This song is very close to my heart. I never imagined it could be decorated in such ways, especially with a flute. I can't wait for your and Tawanda's next projects.
Incredible!! I would never have imagined this song performed in a jazz arrangement would be so remarkable!!
PMJ has offered sublime renditions of jazz over the years. But this was the best yet, IMHO. Scott - thank you for this wonderful arrangement, with improve at the forefront. And please DO ask Tawanda back for more. Her talent is so striking and I feel moved by her rendition offered herein. The instumentalists play so masterfully and with true passion... We are caught up in the music by this tight, talented and stunning ensemble. They are so glorious and I am enthralled.
My respect and affection for PMJ and their artists continues to grow in depth and breadth. Quite simply loved this and am begging for more, my dears.
Tawanda's voice is is buttery chocolate whiskey... not everyone will love the arrangement, but DAMN!
I don't think the arrangement could have worked without her. She is stunning.
Just when I think I've heard the best of PMJ, this happens. Awesome.
I am South African and wasn't familiar with the singer. I know a Zimbabwean with the same name and was quite surprised when I found out that Tawanda's parents are Mozambican (a neighbour of both South Africa and Zimbabwe) and German.
Excellent interpretation of this classic. I put on my good headphones to hear the bass, and I wasn't disappointed!
What a groove! Love the flute.
That jazz flute was being wielded at Ron Burgundy levels!
This is amazing - she’s incredible but whoever arranged this is a frickin genius!
Scott Bradlee arranged it, he's the pianist and band founder and basically arranges all the PMJ covers. And yeah, his arrangements rule. 🙂
Brilliant. Gotta say that flute put it over the top and scratched an itch I didnt know needed to be scratched! Loved it!
I honestly thought that Fleetwood Mac (especially this song) would be a difficult candidate for a PMJ makeover, i still think it is.
BUT.....
You guys nailed it.... as per usual... once again.
Damn...what an entrance by the flautist
Always good to see Jacob Scesney (our family calls him Shenanigans for the cool background stuff he does) with such an awesome part. Surprising and excellent arrangement as always. Also the first time I've heard Tawanda, and I want more.
this is so smoooothe oh my lord the jazz sound felt perfect to wake up to
I loved this song Tawanda has the vibe and she has it all together, amazing performance.
What a voice! This woman could sing anything. 👊🏻
the arrangement to the artists to the set and costumes... just immaculate!!! well done PMJ!
Tawanda's voice is something, but that flute takes everything somewhere else!
WHEEEEEEEEEWWWW! HER VOICE IS BEYOND AMAZING AND PAIRED WITH THIS BAND!!!! AMAZING 🤎🎹🥁
By far my favorite vocal and arrangement version of this song!
This is definetly the best The Chain Cover I ever heard. Tawandaˋs Voice touches the Core of your Soul and Heart.
The intriguing Beatchanges and the wonderful Flute wrap you in a sophisticated Shell of pure Bliss !! More of this.......Itˋs addictive.
i can imagine this in a spy flick, it has soo much sass and character just like the original 🫶
I want all period movies to have a Postmodern jukebox cover of an anachronistic song.
The flute just adds so much to this song, well done everyone.
I love pmj but on this occasion when the dude slid in for a bit of flute action over the gossamer vocals, I knew that this was indeed, my cup of tea.
I love absolutely everything about this! But I’ve got to give props to Brandon Combs on drums. Fantastic feel, technique and sound, truly masterful! Soooo damn tasty!!! Love it!!
My favourite Fleetwood Mac's song (a hit from the best-seller Rumours, 1977). Amazing version, Tawanda and PMJ's company! 👏
That jazzy vibe and Tawadas voice are mesmorizing! Keep it coming PMJ!❤💛
Wow. Just wow. Well worth it for the jazz flute.
That was not what I expected but gosh darn it was so much better than what I expected.
Great job everyone! Tawanda is a star ♥♥♥
That build up was so smooth. I hope to see you guys live soon in Chicago
Я мне не быть в Чикаго.... 😢
Jacob Scesney is genuinely one of my favorite musicians. He’s so good at playing so many instruments. And his tone on playing flute here is haunting in the best way. It gives chills! 😩👌🏼👌🏼
Wow! I'm a huge fan of the original, but this certainly works and has a place in a jazz play list!
THE FLUTE MAN, WHAT A MAN HE IS
A fantastic arrangement and right back at you Mr. Scesney
I am obsessed with the drums in this!!!
This is one of the best covers I've ever heard. You owned it, Tawanda! Hope to hear another 70's hit in this style!! You guys are just amazing!! Thank you!
OK. I'mma need more Tawanda. So, SO much more. Her voice is pure honey.
Incredible arrangement of a timeless classic...and that voice and the flutist take a bow. Bravi.
Awesome reharmonization, love it! 😍 This is one of the best PMJ songs ever!
God this song is already phenomenal; this cover just makes it better!!
Fantastic! Never stop making music Scott!
More Fleetwood mac music please.
Yes!
The freedom of expression in jazz allows for endless possibilities and surprises.
That was remarkably beautiful. What a sweetly soothing voice to jazz up this rendition of a classic song. Thank you for this!
I always felt like this song could be a very nice jazzy cover, it's one of my absolute favourite songs and you guys crushed it. Very enjoyable!
This one really was special.
When the flute came in... DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!
Just saw the show in Asheville....phenomenal night and just a ton of talented musicians.....catch them if they are in your area...Great rendition of the Chain by Fleetwood Mac
I listen to the original all the time. I'm so happy that it got a pmj
Haunting... I love this rendition. I would never have thought of this arrangement, but it's exquisite!
It’s a totally different song like this, and I love it! ❤🎶
So smooth......
What a beautiful woman Tawanda is, and such a fantastic voice.
Great version of a classic.
This was done so beautifully-- my absolute favorite rendition of this song 😍💕💕💕 great job❤
So smooth. And not just Jacob!
I love how jazz flute homey floats in like Sorry i was late!
Okay, she's already got me impressed, and the song is just starting.
Tawanda 😍💯💣
Please come to Brazil, we need this culture here!
В вот и легендарный FleetwoodMac подъехал. Здорово!
What classy musicians! Wonderful!
Beautifully done!
That was unexpected and delightful.
Wow. The music, the style, the dress!
Everything is just perfect in every way.
PMJ is reliably good, but this cover is truer to it's designated style while simultaneously being a remarkable example of said style. Excellent piece!
When the layers are softened the poetry of the piece becomes crystal clear.
Gave me absolute chills.
Wow! Love, love, love it and Tawanda, you are GORGEOUS, girl!!
the feeling is good.🙏👌
BEAUTIFUL
Flute makes everything so much better...
This is one of my favorite songs. You made it better
PMJ is a learning experience. It makes me enjoy genres I never have enjoyed beforde
I thought nothing could top the original, but this is a fun re-imagining. Tawanda's voice is magnificent.
Really nice cover - this singer has a beautiful voice and Jacob is a truly amazing versatile musician...tops!
This is actually fantastic
Fantastic vocals and artistry on the instruments.
Didn't see this was a 70s jazz cover from the notification and my first thought was "how can this be a 70s cover when the song is a 70s song itself"
Thank you PMJ for sharing
Thank you Scott for this unique and beautiful arrangement of The Chain
Tawanda you are amazing !!!!!!!
Incredible!
Beautiful and classy! I love the jazzy take on this classic and probably challenging Fleetwood Mac song. Amazing!
OMG - that is simply awesome!
The original is brilliant, & so is this cover.
Great job, everybody!
Please keep making videos of your performances.
Brilliant. Tawanda is a jewel I really want to see her more often. The grooviest drummer in the world enjoying every interaction. And along comes the flutist, an an epitome of cool with sunglasses and swagger screaming "Yeah, I am the 70s"
This blew me away, I've been a fan of FM since I was a kid. Flawless execution and arrangement as always.
HOLY CRAP - wowza!! YESSSSS! thank you. This is incredible!!!! gave me chills.
WOW! One of the best arrangements and voices I have heard in a long time. Love it.
Wow! What a different feel to this classic. Even more so than the live video of FM when they were at the 'hate' stage of their love/hate relationship.
PMJ has some of the most interesting and diverse reinterpretations of music from groups you would never think could be jazz.
Bravo! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Her voice is beautiful!!
