    I've been working music contray to my politics out my playlists and it's done wonders for my mental. There's billions of artists in the world that we can only support ones that reflect our values.

    This convo was soooo good. And very much needed in this moment to keep myself sane.
    The Blinken press conference is literally like a caricature of a cutscene of the most evil villains in the world speaking openly about their plans. Can’t make this shit up. Sometimes I forget just how brazenly open the U.S. is about its imperialism and utter contempt for the world lol.

    Just wanted to add something important regarding Chuck D's point about CZcams and Google:
    Google has had a think tank within the company known as Google Ideas. It was spearheaded by Eric Schmidt, who went on to work at the State Department. He is now investing in autonomous military drones. So there is a lot of significant overlap between Google and the State Dept. as well.

    Really glad you had this topic and appreciated the convo. I actually liked the Blinken clip because the language he used is very similar to language of arts councils and arts funders ie the “universality of arts, etc. which ties in well with the larger colonial motif “the universality of Europe”. Feel like Raymond Williams’ work “Culture & Society” is helpful to think about “culture”, in a Western European context, or maybe more so “the arts” are a particular reformist creature of the capitalist class and what could be gained by applying this to PE even it’s hay day? My recollection is that PE in the 80s and 90s weren’t necessarily shouting out actual counter or radical political movements to join from the stage, but would be curious about folks from NY remember since i only saw them on big tours.

    • @MAKCapitalism
      @MAKCapitalism  Před měsícem +1

      Solid insights Justin. I think the main question would be whether people viewed the NOI - in the late 80's and early 90's - as a radical political movement. Since I think that was the strongest influence on PE and the thing that they were most often understood (and demonized) in relation to and which they referenced in their heyday "Farrakhan's a prophet that I think that you should listen to." I think it was a counter-cultural movement at least and NOI & 5% Nation certainly influenced a lot of what I view as the more progressive (for lack of a better term) hip hop in the era. But yeah I personally would stop short of at least calling it revolutionary. Anyway you raise good points all around.

    • @justinlaing924
      @justinlaing924 Před měsícem +1

      @@MAKCapitalism thanks I was thinking about NOI and Farrakhan and thinking of them also as "cultural" (and so one cultural movement referencing another one) but you are making me remember Farrakhan was pointing out Khaddafi and trying to build relationships back then, so, yeah, no neat boxes in which to categorize folks, but glad the Williams points seems to make sense to you because it does feel like his work is worth lifting up more, even if he is a "cultural Marxist" lol

      i think in this moment the empire is doubling-down on 'soft power' psychological warfare tactics, because it is in fact losing a narrative war in some regards. as we speak, roughly 60% of U.S. adults read below the literacy rate of a 6th grader; Walter Rodney said that deep mental, cultural, and social underdevelopment were part of the ongoing process of underdevelopment.
