- At the 1975 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints drafted Purdue wide receiver Larry Burton in the first round. Five minutes later, head coach John North said that he was having second thoughts, and that he would've done things differently if he could have. And the end result was that the Saints not only chose a massive bust, but wound up passing on one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL. @@SuperNuclearUnicorn Only because my team stupidly passed him up in the draft to take a nickel CB after leading the league in pass D the previous season and then 5 years later the team medical staff said Brees' arm was to shot to throw the ball but had no problem taking another QB with bad knees. 😡

@@SuperNuclearUnicorn They "stumbled" onto Brees because the Dolphins were convinced his shoulder wouldn't hold up, and opted to sign Culpepper, which resulted in hilarity for fans watching him Culpepper trying to play football outside of Minnesota.
With all due respect I think the Saints picking George Rogers over Lawrence Taylor was a bigger blunder.
Any body getting picked before LT is a mistake. Except maybe Jim Brown.

To be fair, the Saints did draft, Rickey Jackson, in that same draft, and ended up in the Hall of Fame. Jackson was the second-best LB of the 80s.
In 1978, the Saints had a receiving corps that was upper echelon. They already had one of the best TE's in Henry Childs, they wisely traded for Ike Harris from St. Louis, drafted an All-World WR in Wes Chandler and also one of the best RB receivers of all time in Tony Galbreath.
It is no wonder Manning blossomed and made the Pro Bowl in '78 and '79 and the Saints became respectable.
Gary "Big Hands" Johnson. I remember him well. He gave my favorite team, the Broncos fits twice a year in the late 70's-early 80's!🏈
Mike Ditka wasn't the one with the Whig it was Ricky Williams he and Mike Ditka took a picture together on a sports illustrated cover where RW had on a wedding dress.
Trading Danny Abramowicz in 1973 was pretty stupid. Even if his production had declined, his leadership was sorely missed.
Hiring him as OC was even worse
He clashed with Archie hence the trade.
Also, the French Quarter started to get to him.
Oh, it gets even worse. The Saints still could've had DT Doug English in the second round who according to PFR had a higher career Approximate Value than Johnson and made just as many Pro Bowls. But instead they decided they had to have center Lee Gross at 32. Gross played just 4 seasons (3 with the Saints) and never started a game. English was selected at 38. Yeah. I guess you could say that was a totally gross pick.
How about this? They could have had a killer line with Gary Johnson in the 1st and Fred Dean in the 2nd. Dean was picked right after Gross.
@@jlh4jc WOW!!! Good catch, I didn't notice that! Then again the Chargers got Johnson and Dean and somehow failed to even reach a Super Bowl let alone win one. Some teams just always find a way to screw up. EDIT: and they got Louie Kelcher in that same draft too?!?! That's just not fair.
Cringe-worthy moment from my time as a lifelong Saints fan; younger fans don't realize just how horrible they were for the first 20 years of their existence. I can still hear Wayne Mack on the radio: "...and Manning launches a deep one to Burton, he's wide open and...he drops it".
Do you still have your Ain'ts paper bag? My team was almost as bad before they turned it around. I'm a Steelers fan and before Chuck Knoll they were horrible.
@@johnmilligan2964 the Steelers weren't horrible in their first 40 years, just piss poor management by ownership. This is especially in the 50's when they were an up and down franchise, but Rooney made some poor decisions.
I am old enough to remember. It's why I rooted for the Saints so hard in '87 and was so heartbroken after the Mike Lansford kick in the '83 season finale 😭😭😭

In my opinion Knoll doesn't get enough credit for the amazing job he did in Pittsburgh. I've always had a soft spot for your Saints and for the Bucs back in the day.
Larry Burton, according to The States-Item's Peter Finney, had All-World speed and All-Neighborhood hands.

Lindsay Scott was another bad Saints draft pick at receiver in 1982.
Too funny man, that was my first thought when I saw the Header: Lindsay Scott. Then I realized the photo on the Header looked a bit older! Lindsay was the dude who caught the screen pass for a TD against the Gators, in 1980?
In the early 70's the Saints could have had Archie Manning throwing to John Gilliam and Ken Burrough(00). But like with Wes Chandler later, the Saints had no use for dynamic playmaking wide receivers, and couldn't wait to run them all out of town to become stars elsewhere.

I can see why the Saints were so wretched until the late '80s. It was decisions such as this one. They knew they needed DL help long before that draft, so that's a lack of foresight on their end.
Yep...never a playoff birth or even a winning season for that matter until 1987.
Seeing all the missed-catches by the Saints wide receivers, I can certainly see why they wanted to get a receiver and Burton being an Olympian and deep threat capability, the organization probably thought: oh how exciting...but not in the first round🙃🙃🙃

Poor Archie Manning. Everytime I see him get hit its like dude you could have gotten out of the saints many times but only a trade later in his career saved him except it didn't
How about the time the Browns called the wrong draft prospect; they drafted Jordan Cameron & end up calling Cameron Jordan.
Cameron Jordan already got drafted in the first round by…wait for it…the Saints.

This reminds me of another WR the Saints used their #1 draft pick on; Lindsay Scott (80) in 1982 (out of Georgia). Similar stats as Larry Burton (80) - never developed into a productive starter in a short career. Although the Saints did hit the jackpot with Wes Chandler (89), drafted in 1978.

Also, the '75 draft was...actually a bad one for WRs. Two RBs and a TE caught more passes than any WR from that draft, and no WRs even had 400 career receptions. Only one (Freddie Solomon) had more than 300. By comparison two WRs from the previous draft had over 500 career catches, and Lynn Swann wasn't one of them (he had more catches than any WR from the '75 draft besides Solomon though). The '76 draft produced Steve Largent and three more WRs who had more career receptions than anybody from '75.

Larry Burton, Ricky Williams, and Ricky Whittle are the EXACT REASONS that the New Orleans Saints are WELL BELOW a 39.6. They would be WAY BETTER OFF just SPIKING the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!!
And John North was a receivers coach for 8 years in Detroit before becoming HC in New Orleans. He should’ve known better. Tough rookie season for Larry Burton (80) - Saints were dead last in the league in offense; points scored, total yds., and total passing yds.
The Saints had a horrible draft that year. In the second round they took a center who barely started and the pick right after was Fred Dean. They picked RB's who did nothing, a guard who barely started. Their best player was a DE in the third round, who was good for his draft selection but not a pro bowler or anything.
Where are you getting the sack stats? Sacks weren't officially recorded until '82. If there's an unofficial source, I'd like to read through it.
Pro Football Reference went through every box score and did every sack total since 1960

People glorify the 1970s as the NFL golden decade and yes there were great moments and teams but watching these videos of these bad coaches in this era such as John North Alex Webster Norm Van Brocklin John Mazur Clive Rush and Charley Winner to name a few there were a lot of sucking in the 70s football too.
And every Jets coach after Weeb
The bad teams were much worse than the bad teams today, but the top teams were also more dominant.

Archie Manning could have been as good as his sons if he had more weapons on offense. I hate it when arguably great players get no help.

@@steveschneiderman3761 At least Rogers wasn't a complete bust. He was actually pretty good until the drug abuse took its toll. Even if you were alive back then you had to know Bum Phillips was taking a RB at #1, that was just too predictable.

I just looked at the 1975 draft on Wikipedia. Immediately after the Saints drafted Larry Burton the next three picks were defensive tackles, including Gary Johnson. The Jets first round pick traded to the Saints was presumably #12. If so, the Saints used that pick on Ohio State Offensive Tackle Kurt Schumacher. The next defensive lineman didn’t go until pick #25, when the Vikings took Defensive End Mark Mullaney. So North may have been on to something with his regret on behalf of the Saints.
A team taking a WR at #7 when the next WR in that draft isn't picked until #36 is the epitome of a reach.
When making a point that Archie Manning is a very good quarterback you should not put up passes that was his fault one wasn't the other ones was bad decisions

You need to declare for the draft. And you can only do that if you have been out of high school for three years and have used up all of your college eligibility.

Well it took some effort to be as bad as they were for so long. When I was a kid (mid 70's to early 80's) the Saints were always the Aints. As bad as the Bucs were the Saints had a tradition of losing. The Bucs at least were an expansion team.
Seems like the Saints might as well have drafted Cliff Burton (original bass player for Metallica).

I thought the biggest draft regret was when the Saints traded their entire draft to the Redskins to get Ricky Williams.
The difference is Mike Ditka was all in on Ricky Williams in the immediate aftermath of picking him, while North had immediate regrets. HST, one man recently said it was a mistake for the Saints to trade their entire 1999 draft for Williams. That man was Ricky Williams.

reminds me of the story i've heard around the webs that the team that drafted jordan cameron, actually drafted cameron jordan because they filled the name card in wrong. not sure if it's true, but i don't feel like looking into it. 🤣
Cam Jordan went in the 1st round. Jordan Cameron went in the 4th round. Same draft, though (2011), so that's weird.
It's not a true story, although that would have been funny. Cam Jordan was a highly ranked DE, Jordan Cameron was a middle round ranked TE. It was just a joke. Like when the Jets drafted Michael Carter (HB) in the 4th round, then drafted another Michael Carter (S) in the 5th round. The joke being that the Jets drafted the wrong one and fixed their mistake the next round.

They (Cleveland) did draft Jordan Cameron in the 4th round. They made a call to the wrong player. When they said they were drafting him, Big Cam Jordan said, “Sorry, but I’ve already been drafted in the 1st round, but I’ll take that signing bonus check though!”
Archie Manning was terrible. If he would have been playing in today's day and age, his career would have fizzled out faster that JP Losman.
