Paint Your New Mask? Should you do it?

- A good goalie helmet keeps your head safe. It's probably the most important item in your bag. So it's a good idea to get the best one your budget will allow. And once you have a fancy new helmet why not give it some personality? This video will tell you how you can get your helmet painted by a professional airbrush artist. Should you get it painted, wrapped, or just leave it blank? Will the paint or wrap hold up? Watch the video to find out.

Thanks Mike! The hippo idea just came to me one time during some net chaos. The puck was bouncing all around with sticks and legs everywhere and I reached out, covered it, pulled it in and yelled "Hungry Hippo!" - Now I say it all the time.

@@iceicegoalie-OG I was just a hockeyball goalie but as far as I know those Bauer masks are pretty good, cost around 1000 euro in here and many profi hockey goaltenders use them in leagues 😉 but its probably 960.. Anyway have a great day, greets from Slovakia 👍
@@erikandrasik8667 Slovakia!!! awesomeness. Hearing from someone so far away reminds me of my grandfather who was a ham radio guy. He used to talk to people all over the globe. - And, yes, this 960 is a really good mask. It might be overkill for ball hockey unless you're using those frozen water filled balls. The padding does wear out over time and Bauer doesn't sell replacement padding for safety reasons. After some searching I found a company that does sell padding for most masks and I replaced mine. I should have made a video of that darn it! But it's like a new mask again now. Thanks for watching and commenting from the other side of the world!
@@iceicegoalie-OG Thanks so much !! Yes we play with those orange balls made from gum/plastic or something like that and it hurts a lot mainly in winter time when its freezing and its nearly like actual puck but in different shape :D So classic hockeyball mask is enough but I wouldnt risk the floorball masks cause they could fall apart after heavy shot right to the mask.. I am obsessed a lot with goalies masks, its something more compare to players when you can actually paint something on it something personal, meaningful..I just love masks and your video literally cheered me cause your mask is sick and with that yelow cage its brutal, seriously!! Awesome! I can’t wait to see those eyes staring back at me in some future videos. I would like my back plate to be redone. I’ll never be able to cover up a puck without thinking about hungry hungry hippos, haha! Fun video!!

Your new mask turned out amazing! Your friend is a very talented artist. I really like the bone mask and eyes with the yellow cage. The yellow in the cage really pops against the darker base in the mask. Really happy for you Morgan! Not only is your head safe from errant pucks, but you look really stylish too. Thanks Jack! Yeah Ken is amazing. He way exceeded my expectations. And I love love colored cages! Also, I can't believe how durable the helmet paint is. I've seen other guys with painted masks that are all chipped up. It's early but I've already taken some pretty hard shots to the noodle and so far not even a mark.

You should. Ken's awesome and super easy to work with. You just need a backup helmet while he works on it.
That paint job is fu@&*n sweet. I’m not sure if I’m going to paint mine. Maybe do a removable vinyl since I have a vinyl printer. I had my first game this last Friday and took 2 shots to the head and I didn’t feel anything besides the ice getting in my eye.

What a gorgeous job, and the hippo is just priceless! This makes me want to get into airbrushing. I've painted forever, but airbrush artists take things to a different level of realism. Really enjoyed the video :)
Airbrush takes a lot of patience. And you have to be creative with how you peel back the layers of frisket or you make more work for yourself. But what you can create makes it all worth it for sure. I used to do it years ago but I could never do what Ken does. Thanks my friend!

Killer design and execution on the mask!!
Charles! You were a big inspiration in this. I animated the puck guy because of your Peter Puck appearance in your video. I'm not the most skilled animator so I couldn't get him to work as well as you did. And your Trailer Park Boys content got me to start re-watching that show. I just love it. So I needed the Bubbles "deeecent" in Here somewhere too! Thanks for all the crazy creative ideas you always come up with.

Been using mine not custom since I started playing hockey. My desire to get a custom one is slowly ramping up!

@@Goalier95 No problem. Ken is really good. You just have to follow up with him from time to time or your mask might sit. I bugged him about once a week for updates and he always replies.

Hi Dmitri, thanks for watching! It can be pretty expensive for sure. I've seen people paying $1,000 or more when I was researching this. But Ken charges waaay less than that. The price always varies depending on how complicated your design idea is. I hope you do it. I absolutely love this thing.

What can i use to fill a Air holes on my mask? Bondo? Only using as a display.
Hi Rob - I'm not sure bondo would hold up to puck hits. Are you referring to the vent holes in your mask? I'm not an expert on masks so I'd recommend doing more research before you go to the effort. Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck!

Thanks nuynobi, the cost depends on how complicated your design is. But this one was about $1000 for the paint job.
@@iceicegoalie-OG Nice. I'd have guessed more. Still too much for me though. I'm gonna DIY it.🤞 Needless to say it will be a simple design with solid colours, 90s-style. I've had the same all-white bucket for 25 years now and it was in pretty rough shape. I've just replaced all the hardware and straps and have ordered (still waiting for) a cat eye replacement cage. I'd like to replace the foam too but I haven't found suitable replacement foam anywhere. So a bit of work but still cheaper than buying a new mask, and certainly cheaper than a custom paint job.

It is hand painted with an airbrush for the major parts and traditional brush for the tiny details. You can paint a whole mask with a traditional brush but the results are different. Luongo has some cool traditional brush masks.
