    That is excellent news that the built kits survived the trip, it's a pity with the tanks that they did not turn the turrets to the rear , but that is life, glad it all turned out ok, best luck with the new set up, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia.

    I know what you mean mate.
    I’ve moved interstate about 5 times for work and I was so reluctant to do any full builds whatsoever.
    Now that I’ve finally settled and retired I’ve got a huge backlog of kits to catch up with 😂

    A very unique video, one many modelers might not think of. Its like the old saying " six one way, half a dozen the other" You do have a great supply of packing paper which has infinite applications, and the formula one cars were exceptional.very well painted. It almost makes you wonder if there could be a special packing paper for modeling. Occasionally I have used the model box itself if the finished kit fits or bought custom box for the kit. So many materials to use and keep the model from pressure, over all, the packing paper worked reasonably well. It does make you wonder about getting kits to a show, but then you have the advantage of transporting conditions under your control. Shipping 6500 miles, the movers are not going to have a large variety of options so it appears you did quite well. Plus with " super glue" repairs are not as difficult these days. Thanks for sharing.

    Really good of you MN to share your removal story as it may help anyone moving with a method of keeping their models safe....at least with only very minor but easily repaired damage. Might I add that biplanes don't do as well given the fragility of struts and top wings....speaking from personal experience in an interstate move. The models were packed by the company so it depends which one you use. Mine was a reputable, long standing and reliable one (used in several previous moves) but it went bust soon after and taken over by another company while the models were in storage for eighteen months. Where the damage happened is anyone's guess.
    Hopefully someone out there has a better way of transporting delicate models and can share their experience(s).

    Where have you and this information been 40 odd years ago???
    Hi MN, now you did it... ...you made me cry 😭 Your video made me reminisce myself. When we moved from Germany to Kenya in the '70s my dad said I couldn't take all my ships, planes, tanks, and Star Wars stuff with me because we were tight on space on the shipping container. So he made me crush every single kit I had into a big garbage bag. I remember vividly how I balled my eyes out during the whole ordeal. Then in the '80s, when I moved back to Germany, they told me that there was not enough space due to being air freight - so I had to crush my elaborate collection of planes and F1 cars - again😈😈😈 Since then I never built a ship, or a car, or..I totally forgot all my helicopters, or anything else but 1/35 military stuff. And believe you me, I learned my lesson well! In the last 35 years I moved 4 times... ...but I still have every single kit I have built since (even though I don't display them all)🤩
    I'm happy for you that your move didn't leave such deep scars on your soul like it did for me. Now you've got lots of tidy-ups to do, and packaging paper to burn, thus bidding defiance to the current gas crisis 🔥 After you've unpacked everything, a tour of your shelves would be much appreciated!!! I don't remember if I already did - but either way: I wish you a successful and fulfilled 2023 🎆 Cheers, Mike

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před rokem

      Cheers Mike. That's pretty gut-wrenching doing that to your kits. I don't remember what happened to the ones I made as a kid (I must have only had half a dozen) but they certainly didn't survive. Having lived in Kenya myself for a few years in the early 2000s I can only imagine what it must have been like in the 70s. I'd love to go back for a visit one day.

    • @MikeUSA67

      @@ModelNerd So do I, so do I. But to a certain degree I'm scared of going back - I had to leave Kenya because my parents both died in a plane crash and I was under age, so I was "forced" to go live with my grandparents. But somehow to this day I consider Kenya my home, and not Germany (where I spent most of my life (which is odd with me being American). So to make a long story short, I really don't know how I would feel going back and seeing it all again. It might bring up something I can't cope with. But on the other hand...?
      I usually don't meet many people who have lived in Kenya (or Africa for that matter), so please excuse my nosiness: where did you live? If you taught school, which one? Maybe ISK?
      I lived in Loresho in Nairobi, and as far as I can see from Google Maps, my old house got torn down and the whole area got developed and changed dramatically. And that's what I would fear most - the change! Nothing is like in my memories anymore. Take Naivasha for example- if you'd have known it in the early '80s, and compare to how it is now - you would instantly start sobbing, I bet you.
      Sorry, I'm rambling again 😬 If you want to we could discuss this further via email as this is not really a topic for YT, or is it!?

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před rokem +1

      Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear that - I can understand your uncertainty about going back. I used to work (and live at) Starehe Boys Centre in Nairobi. It is a charity school for orphaned and disadvantaged children, out towards Eastleigh. It's funny, I just looked it up on Google Maps and then realised I have no real idea of the geography of Nairobi because Google Maps didn't exist back then :) After Kenya I moved to Tanzania, which I didn't like much in comparison.

    I moved from Aus to the US a few years back and flew most of my collections across the pond with me. The biggest issues I had, aside from the minor damage that came from transport rolling the boxes around was that the superglue holding them together froze and many of them came apart. I had packed them with bubble wrap and cotton wool, I wonder if I had done it with baking paper like your company did if it wouldn't have been so bad.
    I did eventually repair most of them since I'm a wargamer more than a modeler, and they were armies, so they were needed.
    Glad your stuff mostly survived the trip. Hope you don't have to do it again any time soon.

    I am getting inundated with models I've built and have considered selling some, but its the shipping that puts me off. If they don't arrive in one piece buyers are going to give me hassle, probably making the whole thing rather miserable. I use a lot of Tamiya extra thin cement and I don't think that is a very strong cement. I think the thicker stuff is better for structural pieces. I would be tempted to unpack and repair each kit as I go otherwise you will end up with lots of small parts getting lost.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před rokem

      I've placed each model on the shelf with its parts in front of it. I didn't really want to have a load of cardboard boxes hanging around taking up a lot of space (somethings the packers (very helpfully) only put one or two models in a single box, so there were a lot of them).

    Packing and moving models can be a nightmare. I moved over 3 years ago and it wasn't a real long distance, about 400 miles is all. I had several model ships, and airplanes, and paked them all myself with packing peanuts, bubble wrap and paper. Most of them arrived at my new home just fine, but even with all the careful packing I did, there was some damage especially to the ships. I have a couple 1/700 battleship models that I built for someone, and have to ship them. I am not looking forward to it.

    Looks like most of your F1 and armor models survived for average 90% But some of the airplanes got hit pretty bad. I think a part of the damage was due to not packing things yourself but maybe you did not have time to do so. Still most is ok and with a bit of superglue back in shape in no time.

Now you have some minor touch-ups for a rainy day. lol This was a nice walk down memory lane. I remember these builds. It is fun to see them again. Any thoughts for a display case or shelving unit? The collection will look quite impressive.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  Před rokem

      Hi Michael. For the shelving I went for the good old Ikea Billy Bookcases. Though I might try to add some additional shelves in them because they must have a gap of at least ten inches and few models are that high. The Dora was built here in the UK. I transported that on the back seat of my car from my old house to my new one - luckily only a 10 minute drive, and everything survived. I will post some photos or video of my model, when (if!) if is tidy enough!
