The new James Webb telescope is not out looking for life (radio telescope do that - they look for radio signals/communications). One of the many things that the Webb telescope will study are the atmospheres of extrasolar planets, so we might find planets that are somewhat similar to the Earth but that does not mean that they have life.

    I have a unique viewpoint of putting your life to God to Jesus and to the Bible
    and then you find out it may not be true
    because you start looking for evidence
    I wish people would talk to me so I can explain how Christianity
    affects to a persons life
    how you dedicate your life to something
    that might be a lie
    you’re teaching your children this religion which lacks evidence

      I'm an atheist, but there's more to Christianity than the actual existence of god or whether the texts were god-inspired. Ehrman himself says although he is agnostic, he thinks the books are wonderful stories that can teach us many valuable lessons. And there does seem to be ethical teachings one can incorporate into one's life toward the betterment of oneself and humanity.

  • @dreadnaught2406
    @dreadnaught2406 Před 2 lety +8

    YHWH not being a derivation of a specific canaanite god but a syncretic deity that took on the attributes of others as they expanded out is a pretty interesting view. It adds more weight to the documentary hypothesis and fits well with the traces of an origin in henotheism amongst a polytheistic people found in across the old testament. Jews gaining power over time, gradually equating chief gods with YHWH until their history forgets gods like El was originally a separate entity and making myths out of remnants of the conquered religions' practices and beliefs really helps the oddities and bouts of faithlessness in their stories. Russian Christianity and Islam strongly incorporated preexisting regional folklore into their beliefs too so it's not like it's unheard of to have an already established theology and regional cultures blend together and change things permanently for the former.

    • @AurorXZ
      @AurorXZ Před 2 lety +2

      Exactly. Most think that Yahweh originally came from people in or around Midian, and then slowly syncretically replaced Baal and El-being described with their titles and powers. Mark Smith's two books, "The Early History of God" and "The Origins of Biblical Monotheism," together with John Day's "Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan" are exceptional references for this.

    Just one correction, to 1:00:58-1:02:06. There is evidence that others also dedicated their enemies to their god. On The Moabite Stone, the king of Moab says about taking Nebo from Israel: "So I went by night and fought against it from the break of dawn until noon, taking it and slaying all, seven thousand men, boys, women, girls and maid-servants, for I had devoted them to destruction for (the god) Ashtar-Chemosh."

    37:25 - From the perspective of the light-speed traveler, length contraction (another feature of GR) would tend to make the traveled distance shorter, reducing the travel time.

    5:29 Oh oh. I hear the muslim spin doctors as you said, stampeding towards that statement. Their main point is that Islam was what original christianity is and specificly Paul made Christianity up.
    8:30 Did he forget the Gospel of Marc mentions it in chapter 1? Also, Matthew did know Jesus. And the authorship of the gospels is unanimous. Ireneas, Tertullien of Carthage, Clement of Alexandria, andthe author of the Muratori Fragment mention all the making ofs and authors. Also, Papias and Justin Martyr mention parts of it. Also, papyrus 75 says "KATA LOKAN" So it says its by Luke.
    28:00 All of Paul's letters we posess are quoted by Clement, Polycarp and Ignatius.
    43:14 They're married. Theres nothing wrong with married people finding each other beautiful,desiring them and enjoying each other phisically. And theres this line that comes up "Do not rouse or awaken to the Love until it delights" So its not like a playboy. And Ecclesiastes doesnt take a contrary view, he's telling us how its vanity.
    54:42 Everyone knows they kept going after false gods from all around them. I remember taking Franceska Stavrakopoulou and Aron Ra on that one. Not only Asherah but the other false other gods also. The point is theres no polytheistic part in the Bible. They dug their own hole saying "we think the first part of the Bible that was writen was Hosea" And Hosea has this outdoing punk rock line about idolising Baal. And if you take the classic vertion, The pentateuch and Job and Joshuah are the first books and I'lljust leave it at that for what that means.
    59:00 I actually expectedBart Ehrman to saythe JEPD thing isnt true. I dont know why, it sort of looks like he's trying to throw everything he can find at the Bible here.

      Re 8 and 28, unanimity should be a cause for suspicion. Esp in such a contentious church. Looks more like conspiracy or a published consensus without dissent. If no alternative claims were examined, it's propaganda.

    Calling the Tanach the “Old Testament” is supersessionist. I’m mostly interested one the anti-Judaism and antisemitism in Christianity that starts in the “New Testament.” itself.

    I think Ehrman does excellent work, but I still don't really understand some of Ehrman's arguments or conclusions. He claims everything in the Bible are just stories, but yet he comes to the conclusion that there must have been a historical Jesus. When asked why he does he isn't completely clear and uses long ago debunked (mostly 90s) arguments. I think Carrier is way more up to date with current day academic scholarship and research.
    I also think Ehrman has a completely wrong idea about mythicism. Once again his last look into mythicism was in the 90s from vague internet pages that claim Jesus = Mithra = Horus etc. He and mythicists use like 90% of the same arguments.

      @martenjustrell446 Před 2 lety +5

      Seems he is personally insulted by the idea so he can't take it serious. Maybe because he hates carrier too much, who knows. It's sad however. Ultimate proof that emotions can cloud the judgement of even the most rational expert and that we all are emotional driven. Therefore never put to much value in an expert because they are flawed as well. The data they present is what counts. Even genius people occupational have stupid(amazingly stupid even) ideas and opinions..

    • @friendo6257
      @friendo6257 Před 2 lety +4

      I agree. He doesn’t ever refute Carrier, he just dismisses mythicism as nonsense without presenting a case for historicity.
      Maybe it’s motivated by ego, maybe he’s just stubborn.

      The problem is, the NT scholarship of applying various criteria including the Criterion of Embarrassment yields a completely different character from the Jesus of the New Testament: an ordinary bloke who went around proclaiming the kingdom of god, who at the same time was yet another of those Jewish rebels, and who also fancied men as well as women. Now if the original Acta Pilati was still with us, we'd have the evidence, and the real time in which he lived (21 ce). But this revelation of another, historical Jesus (Yeshua Ha Nozrit) drops the penny that Jesus - the Jesus of the Bible - never existed!

    The questions about whether Paul's experiences has a neurological explanation are better phrased as simply that. There's no value judgement about Paul being "crazy" or anything, but the only two options are that he was having psychotic experiences or he was lying about having psychotic experiences. Value judgements about mental illness are irrelevant to the question but there is nothing critically inappropriate about a speculating neurological cause for Paul's experiences if he ever even actually had any experiences. I tend to see Paul as a Joseph Smith style con artist who came up with his "revelation" schtick as a means of competing with the Jerusalem apostles, but it's possible he really thought he saw something just like it's possible Oral Roberts really thought he saw a 90 foot Jesus. Straight up grifting and scamming are ubiquitous in religion. They're almost synonymous with religion. Genuine psychotic experiences happen, but statistically far less often than hustlers just making it up and I can't read Paul without seeing a hustler. It is a red flag when ANYBODY tells you not to listen to other people.
    William Ramsay thought Paul suffered from malaria, that malaria was the "thorn," and possibly what caused Paul's psychotic episodes. Ramsay caught malaria himself traveling through the same geographical areas as Paul.
