- In this episode I was determined to capture the perfect composition of shipwrecks silhouetted against the rising sun, so I donned waders to venture out into the water. This essential gear allowed me to position myself in the ideal spot, unreachable from the shore. The result? Breathtaking images that fully showcase the dramatic and eerie beauty of the wrecks at dawn. This episode is a testament to the lengths any passionate photographer will go to, ensuring no shot is left behind, regardless of the challenges.
We also encounter a classic photographer's dilemma-I've left my trusty Laowa 17mm lens behind, the widest lens I own. This made life and getting the composition right very difficult indeed. Not one to be easily discouraged, I turn to the art of the panorama to capture the sweeping beauty of the landscape. Join me as I skilfully stitch together multiple images, creating an expansive view that made me forget I'd left my Laowa at home. This technique not only salvaged the shoot but shows that the best shots come from thinking outside the box.
I specialise in large format print focusing on creating fine art images best viewed on a wall.

The wrecks make amazing subjects and that sky was just awesome, looks like quite bit of work wading around in that water but well worth it. Great images throughout. Thanks for sharing and have a great week
Cheers Ralph, it would help if the waders would fit right, I bought them 3 years ago and this was their first outing. My extra weight made it a real struggle to get them on... looked like a comedy routine 😂. I hope you are having a great week too 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks again Izzy for sharing this with us, what a beautiful location with those old rusted ships. The sky was amazing, have a good week.
Cheers Ross, and thank you for coming along and commenting. I can't wait to get back to the wrecks out further in the river. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Amazing location and subjects and even amazing Izzy not being stopped by any hurdles. You certainly earned your cuppa tera with all that effort and work you put in there to get those awesome expousers.
Thank you Marc, really appreciate you coming along on my weekly adventures. I did indeed enjoy my morning cuppa after this... once I managed to get the waders off, now that was a struggle 😂. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Whew Izzy, what dedication to the shot. Thanks for bringing us along. 👏
Thank you for your continued support Mikie. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
Forgetting the lens sure didn't stop you!! WOW, you are bold but certainly rewarded for it. Great subject and those colors, oh my!
Thank you ever so much Juanita. Glad you enjoyed the adventure. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
Amazing colors in the sky and reflections. Intriguing subject as well. You certainly immerse yourself in your work. I'm glad you didn't submerse yourself. Beautiful images as always.
Thank you Keith and I'll certainly try not to do that 😂. Glad you enjoyed the adventure. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
What an extraordinary location. (Added it to my ever-growing list.) Even on Google Maps satellite view it was astonishing, and perhaps it's just me, but it seems also to be a rather melancholy place, as the sea slowly dissolves away their existence. Perhaps it's because I imagine how each vessel battled to protect their occupants from the sea's relentlessness. And what extraordinary skies! Thanks for making the time to take us along on the journey.
Thank you as always Mick, and you are quite right it is a sombre place with those hulking wrecks slowly crumbling away, as they once more return to the waters. Glad you enjoyed the adventure. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
What a beautiful location and stellar morning! I always enjoy seeing you work a scene and really get into your surroundings. You certainly did in this one - waders on and thigh deep in the mangroves 😅 Captivating and just stunning photos to top it off! Thanks for sharing Izzy 😊
Thank you very much Val, this was just one of those magical mornings where I didn't fall in the water and the light played beautifully for me 🤣. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Damn, you’ve got a big set, Izzy. Damned if I’d be walking in there pre-dawn! Lovely shots, as always. 👍
Cheers buddy, at least I don't have to contend with crocs! Just the occasional dolphin and thank goodness it isn't mosquito season. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Great to see some colour😎
Cheers Mark, couldn't agree more. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
Even with the bush the image was excellent 👌👌🏆
Thank you very much buddy, appreciated. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Great tip on the 1600 rule Izzy. Will try that this week.
Thanks Barry, if you are using full frame then bump your ISO to 6400 at f11, f-stop equivalent works a little differently on medium format. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
Once again, you get phenomenal light and conditions plus the location was pretty awesome too especially the taters deep😂
Cheers D, much appreciated. Being Irish I thought you might appreciate a reference to your national dish 😂 especially as its mine too! Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
'Dear Santa, I've been such a good boy this year, can I please have a set of scuba gear? 😂
I appreciate you must do a great amount of pre-shoot research for these locations.
Also I like how you visualise the crafted final edit image when you make the shoot. Beautiful lighting.
When shooting a new waterfall, I often resort to stitched panoramas when access to the ideal composition is blocked by foliage, fallen branches etc. I have toyed with buying a set of waders but walking any distance in them puts me off. So I make do with wellingtons and mini-crampons for extra grip on slippery rocks in stream beds. Thanks for the video. Have a great week my friend.
Thank you Berny, very much appreciated. Yeah a stitched pano can really save the day when you are up close and personal (as well as long range mountain shots of course). And I think the waterfall pano is not mentioned as much as it should. The waders made this a much more pleasant shoot both for me and the viewer as the alternative would see me stripped down to my swimming trunks and believe me I saved you from that particular visual treat 😂. Have a great week B 🙏🙏🙏
Top😀😀
Cheers, much appreciated. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
A great spot Izzy plenty of memories for me fishing 🎣. Beautiful shots mate
Cheers Sean, there are still plenty of people fishing in and around the Island. I take it you have moved out of Adelaide. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
@IzzyAbuleelaPhotography No, I lived in Perth for a few years back in Adelaide. Don't fish much anymore , into my photography now, Izzy.
Just magnificent Izzy thank you as always …I too was shooting a wreck in Plymouth the other day never thought of going that early going to have to go back at some point now ..have a great week mate .
Thank you Ivor, glad this adventure has given you some ideas to explore yourself. best of luck on your shoot and I hope you have a great week too 🙏🙏🙏
So in a mango swamp, wearing waders amidst a mass of ageing wrecks, must be some jokes there, Anyway I half expected to see Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn bobbing by in the African Queen. Quite how you find these locations is truly mind boggling
Moderately fantastic set of shots…of course
Cheers Thomas, I will think of the African Queen when I next venture out to try and capture those distant wrecks as seen in the video. Always honoured to have you along for the ride. Take care of you and yours. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
at 17:40 the image is stunning.. and then you get to 20:40 and wow.. just wow..
Thank you very much Dez, those two came out rather well didn't they 😊. Glad you enjoyed the adventure. Have a great weekend and week ahead 🙏🙏🙏
Fantastic images Izzy. Will have to visit my friend in Adelaide and scout out these locations. But its a long way from Wirral. Keep them coming - i look forward to the vlogs each week
Cheers Derek and you would be made most welcome anytime, although its not like getting the last bus through the tunnel to get here 😂. Glad you enjoyed the adventure. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
To be honest, I'm not a great fan of silhouettes but the skies are fantastic 👍
Cheers all the same Eltin, I have been a long time fan of contre-jour photography but like everything else in life its personal taste. Thanks for coming along buddy 🙏🙏🙏
Glorious images, stunning sky and beautiful reflections Izzy..............your dedication to getting "the shot" is amazing! Many thanks again for another wonderful video, also your settings which are always appreciated. Thanks for the iso1600 rule, which I haven't come across.........but is something I will certainly utilise in pre dawn sunrise 😁
Cheers David, as has been stated elsewhere if you are using full frame then its 6400 you should be using (its slightly different on medium format) 😂. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
@IzzyAbuleelaPhotography Thanks for that added info Izzy, I'm using full frame Z8.........certainly worth a go 👌
flipping Nora Izzy! I was holding my breath watching you wading out into the unknown. rather you than me! But what results!! That stunningly stunning shot of the beautiful coloured sky was a corker. Im a sucker for skies that are lit up by the superb show that nature puts on for us. Quick question: do you print at home or get it done professionally? Thank you Izzy for sharing this. Take care.
Thank you Jill (and Nora 😂), having waders made the whole thing a bit more pleasant and so long as I was careful with my footing I was sure I would be ok. The sky really did show off didn't it! As for printing I print from home (up to A3) anything larger I outsource. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Your skin looks orange in the video. Could you set up a manuel white balance. It would be more pleasing for our eyes. Love your work, have lovely day.
Thank you and I will have a look at the white balance... I appreciate the tip. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
That's interesting. Wouldn't that be ISO 6400? In order to reduce a 1-minute long exposure to 1 second, you'd have to go up about 6 stops, that is from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. 60 seconds -> 30 -> 15 -> 8 -> 4 -> 2 -> 1
Yes so true your maths are quite correct. However I should have mentioned that I use ISO1600 predawn (especially when there is a bright band on the horizon). I find the 2 stops under save my highlights and I am able to bring up the shadows without introducing noise. If the conditions were more balanced (foreground and sky) I would use 6400. I really should have expanded on that in the video, so thank you for picking that up. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
blimey Izzy - waist-deep in a swamp??? you do know there are crocodiles there? I know this as Paul Hogan once told me in a film all about them, I mean him.
Yep sautéed potatoes for breakfast 🤣. I wouldn't do this in the northern parts of Australia where they do get great big salties (salt water crocs) which can grow up to 8.6 metres... just monstrous 🤣. Although I do have to be a touch careful as sharks have been known to swim into this little backwater once in a while, that's where the careful stepping and wading comes in handy! Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
Beautiful light but I'm not getting the 4s to 4M @1600iso?
100 to 1600iso is 4 stops and 4s to 4M is 6 stops?!
6400iso would be 6 stops for 4s, to 4m at ISO? I'm not even drunk yet or am I?
No you aren't drunk buddy, if you are using full frame then 6400 is your go to (I should have mentioned that... and I will in a future video). Medium format resolves f-stop differently and I also went from f11 to f16 which I think complicates matters as it is 2 stops less light! It is strange as I habitually use ISO1600 and get a well exposed image but you are quite correct I shouldn't according to the maths! I will have to investigate more 😂. Have a great weekend 🙏🙏🙏
@@IzzyAbuleelaPhotography Right I can see this comment now :) Medium format has exact same physics/rules in terms of f-stops. Had you used f11 at ISO 100 instead of f16, you'd need to go to ISO 6400 which is exactly 2 stops above ISO 1600. Beautiful shipwreck image btw!
@@IzzyAbuleelaPhotography Ah, I'm a fellow GFX user , Yes the aperture is different on the depth of field but lightwise I've never been sold on the "equivalence" on light as it's so minimal.
Probably your 1600 shots work in the field viewing a JPEG on screen and in such low light if you don't have the screen brightness way down it appears brighter. Reducing the brightness was the best tip I was given for Astro to judge an exposure better, so low light dawn or dusk should be similar.
Ah well at least it wasn't the wine :-)
