I drove through Gary almost everyday for 30 years on my way to work. The difference between the time I started driving through in 1974, until the time I made my last drive through it 2004 is amazing. When I first started driving through Gary their were stores and shops everywhere on Broadway. At the end it looked like a war zone. All the store were gone the building torn down or burned down. It now looks like a post apocalyptic movie set. It’s a shame their are so many beautiful buildings and churches that are in ruins. And it’s true it’s a high crime area but their are truly good decent people still living there. Many of whom I’m proud to call my friends.

There is still a vibrant community there. I used to live there and know many people who work and live there. They want to say it's abandoned, it's NOT. Go there if you doubt me.

If you're a Gary resident or native this is common knowledge.
Just like Gary's only official performing arts school, Emerson was grades 6th -12th and on 3 different occasions the city wanted to combine it with another school, Wirt HS. They finally did the third time and Wirt HS was renamed Wirt Emerson HS only to close a few years ago.

As someone who lives in a town right by, it's not that bad. Mostly just old. A lot of revitalization going on. I've never once felt unsafe, but I'm also not an obnoxious asshole or trying to get up in anyone else's business. I even lived in black oak for a while when I was like 18 with a bunch of friends. Cheapest place we could afford at the time. We got robbed once but it was as kinda my friends fault so, not exactly random.

I lived in Nashville Indiana for a few years and you hear a lot of bad things about Gary, one was delivery drivers had 2 or 3 people with them because they'd be followed and when they got out of the truck someone would jump in and drive away, plus that little area is in a different time zone, that's why they didn't change the clocks in fall or spring
