  • Today we're doing a baitcaster casting battle. I've selected reels ranging in price from $79 up to $240. I'm going to put them head to head to see how these all cast a 3/8 oz lure. I know I was certainly surprised by some of the results. Will you be?

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well czcams.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Makes me feel better with my most recent reel purchase.. ordered a Revo SX online for $108 and they sent me a case of 2 rather than just one.. called them up and they said keep it. I was getting a lot of “don’t go for Abu just get a Shimano or Daiwa”
    Either way 2 reels for $108, can’t beat that🤷🏽‍♂️

Cheapest reel I have is a Lews American Camo. It's a great reel and works fine. I just like nice things, so that's really the only reason to bump up in price range. That and durability. A well maintained aluminum reel will last decades. I have a Curado K with a Scorpion MGL spool. Reeling it feels like running your finger across butter. I absolutely love it. But honestly I can do everything with the 50 dollar reel that I do with that, it just feels nicer.

A late reply, but my two cents on a $200 reel. There is no beating a curado 150mgl. I have many nice reels. So big ones to use as a comparison would be my 21 metanium, 21 diawa zillion sv tw, lews custom lite, and slx dc. Heavy lures, the metanium and zillion out casts the 150mgl by a little. Light lures, only the zillion cast very light (1/8oz total weight) as well. Adjustment and ease of casting, only the slx dc is an easier casting reel as adjustments go from lure to lure. The lews feel better for palming, but the 150mgl is still a low profile that's comfortable. Smoothness when reeling, only the zillion and metanium are smoother. It has a very even and smooth drag too. Much better than the lews drag. Very noticeably smoother.
It doesn't do anything better than some other reel, but thats compared to $300 and up reels. The reels in the same price are very good reels bit the curadp 150mgl is an excellent reel, especially for $200

      @rainbosprinkles6548 Před rokem +2

@@Oldbasshole the curado 150mgl? Not even the custom Lite throws light baits as well. When I say light I am talking about something that weighs a total of 1/8, plastic hook and all. Like a weightless zoom tiny fluke or fluke jr, zman ez shrimp, a 1/10 Ned rig, or 1/16 buggs. The only lews baitcaster that can throw those well is the Tournament SP. This was a fascinating test that required a lot of time and effort from you-and your dad!. Many thanks to both of you. I fish inshore saltwater exclusively and use a round reel. I would LOVE to see you repeat this test with a half-dozen round reels. My very inexpensive Kast King Rover has held up well and performs smoothly, but even with the friction brake backed way of,f its casting distances are disappointing. It would be great to find out what might be achieved with other round reels, like the Daiwa Millionaires, Abu Ambassadeurs, and Shimano Cardiffs and Calcuttas. Best, Chris (in Maine)

Love these videos Debo, like to see that new okuma hakai getting tested. It looks a lovely reel, not sure the 100 size would work for inshore fishing which is what I do, personally use curado 201 hg’s. but as I do bank/wade distance is massive for me, so I’d love to find a workhorse saltwater safe baitcaster that can really cover a lot of distance. To be honest I definitely still trying to find the sweet spot on my reels and can always improve my casting techniques. So your videos are very helpful.

I have 4 Tatula elites, so out of curiosity I took one outside and put a 3/8 ounce on, 50lb Berkeley X9 braid, got 133, 136, 136. I backed off the magnetic brakes to around 4, as I’m more comfortable with that exact setup. The magnetic brakes also have more effect on the end of a cast vs. the spool tension knob which has more effect on the start of the cast. That also might be why I got a tad farther than your tests.

I believe your testing is valid for the recorded distances using the same rod for all the reels. However; it shows what the reels do on that powered rod. When you match the rod power closely to the lure weight the distances will increase. Rod power is as important to casting distance as the reel. You might try using different power rods on the top two reels and you will likely see the distances increase or decrease. Just because the rod maker suggests a recommended range of lure and line weight doesn’t always turn out correct. The length of the rod plays an important part in casting distance too.

I was disappointed in the SLX because I love those reels. But my best casts so for have come from the Concept Z and my longest actually from the Origin C (I don’t know what I did different, it just shot out there like a bullet, but it always casts well though).I have some newer reels I haven’t gotten to use much (health issues this year) so I expect this to change.

funny enough, today I was throwing the same lure on the slx dc. 😅
I'm really curious to see how the slx dc or curado dc would go up against that revo now 😂😂 I might consider grabbing one
    good work anyway👍🏼👍🏼

Very happy with my Alloy M so far. been using it with 20 lb braid and a lipless, casts a mile with ease and have yet to backlash.

I've also used my Alloy M with 20lb braid, you really have to try hard to backlash. Maybe having 12 magnets is the trick? Smooth drag too, really a pleasure to fish with.

interesting review and well done as the conditions were as controlled as possible....lots of variables with wind and all....but any of the top 3 are purchasable. would like to see same vid comparing the dc reels and how they compare to the revo here

I run my Slx xt with one centrifugal and 3 on the mag and consistently bomb it out. I’ve measured the casting distance and it has reached almost 50 yards for me before. I feel like it takes a bit to get it dialed in but once u have it it kills.

I recently bought a daiwa tatula 100. Thing cast so good I bought another. They look sick too. I’m a shimano guy but got the reels on discount. I hate to say they cast better than shimano reels in their price point.

I have a mix of Shimano, Daiwa and Piscifun reels and I while I haven't taken a tape measure to a cast it feels noticeable that the Shimano's don't cast as far as the others. That said, I have mostly Shimanos and I really like the way they feel to fish and they have good smooth feeling drag which while not normally important can sometimes be a factor. I was skeptical about the T wing thing on the Daiwa but it casts great even compared to my DC reels from Shimano. I think my next reel will either be a budget or high end reel from Daiwa just not sure which yet lol

I have a few of the reels you tested (SLX XT, Lews, Revo SX) and a different Piscifun. They're all good for different things, but the Revo is the toughest of the bunch.

Great video! Good results too. If all the reels had the same Ib test line and type it would have been better. Ie. 10lb fluorocarbon on each reel. But hey that’s a lot of spooling fresh line lol. Excellent video my friend.

I have 3 of the standard Shimano SLX. Two of them are 8 speed and one is a 7 speed. While I really like the feel and smoothness of them, I have noticed that no matter how much time you spend tuning them, they are a little inconsistent on their casting distance. I've always wondered if it was an issue with the factory bearings or what but all 3 do it. Its most noticeable when you're trying to cast into pockets with like heavy reeds around and out of nowhere you're having to lay on the thumb much heavier than the previous cast so you don't overshoot it and get hung. It's annoyed me a lot to where I end up using all of my Lews reels more often than not, even if they don't feel as smooth as the Shimano.

  • @damonburge2717

I think you’d be very surprised with lews if you bought some of the higher end ones. I have a hypermag and it’s amazing! And I just got a tournament xp. And it’s no slouch either. But I’ve always liked lews, maybe it’s just because it’s what I’m comfortable with 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think you should do a cast competition within each brand, I think that would be cool too see. Love the content though Debo, good job man!
