      Yeah, plagiarism laws only have power over finished, uncited work. Citing your sources goes a long way into dispelling plagiarism accusations, and given that the thing wasn't even finished yet they literaly had no grounds for calling it plagiarism.

    • @stormrider3530
      @stormrider3530 Před 5 lety +486

      You are correct but plagarism law is one thing. Most schools however have different policies, including the university I currently attend, and those policies are often much stricter. Having said that though, Ive never heard of someone being kicked out for a rough draft. Usually you lose credit for the draft and are given a stern warning... unless you are a habitual offender. Had one of those when I worked as a security guard at a CC and had to walk him out. He had been caught like five times. I dont even feel bad for someone at that point.

    • @ThomasDimensor
      @ThomasDimensor Před 5 lety +713

      @@stormrider3530 Yeah, and even if the rules are stricter, it stil lwas just fucking against the rules for them to do that because 1: You can't plagiarise mathematical proof. It's math, it is literaly impossible to word that in your own words. and 2: It was not the finished product, and as such not legaly plagiarism yet.

    • @stormrider3530
      @stormrider3530 Před 5 lety +127

      @@ThomasDimensor I understand your viewpoint and I'm not disagreeing the school acted unfairly. However, if the policy is in place, the person was provided with the expectations and policies, and they signed the forms to enter school then they are bound by those rules. This is also why people can be kicked out for many other reasons that are not illegal in the wider scope. A lawsuit could be made to challenge this practice but then it would also get bogged down into is it a private or public University? From what I understand private universities can make all the rules they want, this is often called an honor code, so long as they are not discriminatory, illegal in their application, or infringe on the student's rights as promised under the bill of rights. Either way though, if what the poster said was the truth then this school administration had a stick up their ass that needs to be removed posthaste.

    • @ThomasDimensor
      @ThomasDimensor Před 5 lety +157

      It doesn't work like this. The moment you cited information that covers up to more than 15% of your paper, you will be on the radar for plagiarism even if you write the author's name. It isn't as simple as I credited the author's/writer's work so it doesn't count as plagiarism. If 30% of your paper is based on quoting or paraphrasing someone's work, it counts as plagiarism. I think the professor is a bit too harsh, considering that it was just a draft, or he should have been very firm on his stance on plagiarism. The student should have also consulted him or changed his topic on his paper. Considering it was a computer science algorithms course, the student is probably expected to adapt some of the math online, but also come up with the majority of the work.

Plagiarism in math is also absurd to accuse someone of. In math if your work doesn't look like everyone else's, you did something wrong. At my online uni (WGU) I can usually tell if I did it right based on the plagiarism detector. For all my other courses I used to get worried I might get accused of something if turnitin had me down for more than a 10% match to other people's work. Now I get worried I screwed up if at least 40% isn't a match now that I'm in Linear Algebra moving into Abstract Algebra and like a year from graduating with a Bachelor's.

    It was false, told to a third party, amounts at least to negligence, and caused emotional damage and incalculable damage to his reputation. Whoever started the rumor could definetly be found liable.
    If you can prove an employee of the school knew about the rumor and didn't act to prevent the damage to his reputation, they could be liable for not taking reasonable steps to protect a student. It is a bit of a stretch, but the university could take a lot of heat for it in the public eye.

      @k9commander Před 5 lety +14

      Unless an employee of the school started the rumor, I doubt the school would be liable. I believe the rumor began AFTER he had already been expelled from the school. At which point the school is under no obligation to protect him as he is no longer a student. Though the attempt alone may be enough. The University may choose to settle out of court to try and save face.
      If he finds the source and can prove that they are the source, he can sue them. I do not know the law well enough to know if he could sue the school for slander even if the source was a member of the student council.
      He could definitely sue for the expulsion though.

      He had a reply to the thread that indicated he may have been at a school in Ohio when it happened. Doing some research I found 24 private 4 year universities in Ohio that offer a computer programming degree.
      Based on the interest generated by their expulsion, the rapidity and saturation of the rumor spread, and other comments provided by the OP I assumed a minimum of 2,000 students with a maximum of 6,000.
      Using that criteria the following are the most likely candidates:
      Denison, Ohio Northern, Cedarville, Capital, Steubenville, Findlay, John Carroll, Walsh, Muskingum, Baldwin-Wallace, and Franklin.
      Larger schools with the culture to produce such a story (tight knit community, stuck up prick administration, reputation to uphold) include:
      Case Western, University of Dayton, and Xavier
      Hopefully that helps, maybe someone can take those 11-14 schools and eliminate a few?

      This literally just happened to me 1st year of my current bachelor course. I was dealing with personal issues for a period of time, and because I'm studying abroad there were also a lot of practical problems that collided at the same time. I had to skip classes because my mental health was at rock bottom, but I still did my best to keep up with homework and I scored higher average than all other students of my year. Still, because I missed a bit more than 2 weeks, I was not allowed to take my exams even though I had A's in almost all classes. Many of the teachers even came and talked to me to say that they would allow me to take the exams because they knew I put in an extra effort, I just had to get official approval from administration. But the administration board were ice cold, told me that the teachers don't have a say in the matter and just point blank rejected me. So now I have to pay a fine for every exam I have to retake. I don't even need extra courses, I just have to pay money and turn up for another date, even though I have been present at all the original exam days. It's so fucking stupid, I can't believe that not a single empathic person exists at the administration board.
      At least I didn't get expelled, just have to retake exams and pay fees. Some folks out there have it worse.

    I had a similar situation at one point. I needed to quote a large piece of text for a twenty page paper and it took up over 3/4s of one page. I wrote and rewrote the section trying to use smaller quotes from it, but eventually recognised it should be all in one section so that it could be referenced by the reader. I used the correct method to cite the quote, of course, and even stated in the paper that the quote was left in totem in order to make referencing it easier. Wrong choice. Got flagged for plagerism by the automatic software. Had to go in and explain why I'd done it that way. Appearently, even though it was against the formatting rules, I should have put it in an appendix. My prof relented on the plagerism charge (and threat to view the paper as not being long enough) when I pointed out his own syllabus stated that appendixes/footnotes would be counted as words written (to prevent students from handing in 100 pages for a prof to read).
    I still had to beg him to be kind about it. But yeah. Appearently if it's going to take up more than 50% of a page, it should be an appendix. Not that the style guide ever told me that.

    I wasnt kicked out mainly cuz I left first before it happened. I have no real dreams or passions to chase. Nothing was feasible to accomplish. I went through my gen Ed classes and averaged a 3.9 gpa. After that I spiralled out of control. I had to find a major and stick through with it. I tried media arts, com science, business, languages, physics. Nothing really stuck. I found every field interesting but not like something I'd want to commit my life to. I got so depressed eventually that I just slept the entire day away waking up at 7 pm to get food in the caf and then just play games til 2 am, then take a 2 hour shower (I lived in dorms and didn't have to pay water bill) and then pass out again. This went down for about a year and my gpa went from 3.9 to a 1.6. Just told them at the end of the year I wasn't going to come back. It was really hard to do cuz the dean of students is a really nice guy and was acting really proud of me when I was taking my gen eds and was in the top 30 in my grade. I don't know if he knew how I felt and why I was so depressed feeling like nothing in life was right for me but damn it was hard for me to look him in the eye and say that. It felt like I was speaking to my dad and telling him I was sorry for letting him down.. couldn't even stop myself from tearing up a bit..
    Edit: my parents don't even know what happened. I basically cut off all contact with them and moved away. I'd rather have them think I'm an asshole and hate me for ditching them then knowing I let them down.

      I understand somewhat how you feel, completing my high school and possibly something higher was the biggest dream of my mother, then the summer to my second year of high school she passed away and my life was thrown into chaos, I had to move out on my own (with limited experience) and was busy dealing with increasingly more difficult school, grief and maintaining my living space. Eventually I got help but I had to make the decision to temporarily halt my high school to get a grip on myself. School was cool enough in the talk and allowed me to pause it for half a year and join the next year's class. Even with that time I still had issues and over time I had to cut contact with a part of family that has been a part of half to my entire life because they were being a toxic element. Luckily while I cut contact with one part I was able to reignite contact to other parts of my family. Today I still feel the after effects of everything but I completed my high school and I am now basically in work practice and I'm practically already hired at the company and it's a place I can work on while I figure out which direction I fully want to take myself.
      Op, I don't know if there are extra things that cause you to have a rift with your family but if it's only that you're afraid of their reaction, then I hope you won't ignore/forget them solely on that.

My backup plan is to get some solar panels, a greenhouse, two goats, and some chickens and live a self sustaining lifestyle in the countryside. This happened in high school and not in college, but it involved an AP class (i.e. college level class) and this didn't happen to me. AP exams at my former high school are optional college-level exams. You have to pay to take the test, and you get graded 1-5, with 5 being a perfect score. 3 and above was a passing score, but 4 and above could be used on your high school transcript. Anyways, on to the story.
    One of my friends in high school took AP Statistics, and they failed the AP exam. Then it came out that one of the students found the answer sheet online for the AP Statistics exam and downloaded all of the answers into their graphing calculator. This student also shared the answers with other students, who also downloaded the answers onto their graphing calculators. The student who found the answer sheet and shared it was expelled, and I think the other students who cheated were either suspended or also expelled. Because of this incident, my school adopted a policy to scan all graphing calculators before all final exams, and stickered them to show they had been checked. I didn't have a graphing calculator in high school so the policy didn't affect me.
    Also, every student who took the AP Statistics exam and wasn't expelled or suspended was forced to retake the exam. My friend was pissed because they'd obviously not cheated since they'd already failed the test, and they did not want to retake the exam. But they had to and so they did it...and they failed again. As an aside, I spent $160 to take two AP tests unrelated to this story, and I failed both tests. The tests were pretty damn hard.

    I just don't get people complaining about attendance. Yes, you're paying to attend the college, but colleges are competitive to get into. If you can't even get up and attend your classes, then the school is better off giving that spot to someone who *will* attend the classes and get good grades. Even if you're getting good grades without attending your classes, it's irresponsible not to show up because you're wasting your teacher's time.
    Just get up and go to the classes that you're paying for. Unless you've got a mental/physical thing preventing you from doing so, it isn't as hard as people make it out to be.

    • @joobletmaster5000
      @joobletmaster5000 Před 5 lety

      @M. de k. Maybe that's because a person's intelligence isn't the only thing that matters. Employers also need to know, for one, that their employee knows what they're doing. If they went to college, then they don't have to worry as much, but hiring someone with no degree, based entirely off of them saying, "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing?"
      It's stupid.
      Also it's important to know the employee is responsible and that they won't give up when things start going south. College is hard. If somebody gets through and passed, then that means they were responsible enough to graduate and mentally stable enough not to fall apart.
      That's the argument I can think of off the top of my head right now.

    • @joobletmaster5000
      @joobletmaster5000 Před 5 lety

      @M. de k. That may be so, but a degree is a sign that you know what you're doing. I understand most things can be self-taught, but without a degree, you won't have any proof of your competence, not to mention that unless you study the thing you're wanting to do, you might be unintentionally making mistakes in your job. It would be like picking up a clarinet, playing for a few years by yourself, and then trying to join a professional band. You might be really good at it, but there's still going to be a lot of small, seemingly unimportant things you don't know about, like vertical alignment, watching for multiple things at any given time, balance, dynamics, et cetera. I don't think band really requires a college degree (though it certainly helps), it's just an example, but my point is that you can teach yourself a lot, but instruction and experience goes a very long way. Also, when I talk about degrees, I also mean them from a practical sense. It just seems more reasonable to hire someone in, say, accounting or managing (maybe IT) if they have a degree. That being said, in reality, I don't actually know these things because (if my profile picture wasn't telling enough,) I've never actually had a job. This is just how I'd imagine things to be, so I'm probably wrong.
