the prices of 70's Fender & Gibsons! theyre dogs! and nowhere near the quality of what theyre making now..... yet the prices. Deluxe Memory Men, Tubescreamers and of course Klons. RAT pedals from the 80's.... cos guess what: the circuit is unchanged!!

25 years ago it was inexpensive (bluesbreaker 40€ - Squier JV €400 - JCM900 €400). Now you find Bluesbreaker 500€ ,JVs for more than €1300 and JCM900s for €900!

early 70s MIJ guitar copies. all this LPs with bolt on necks, strats with truss rods covers & etc. they became decent, but closer to 80s. early copies aren't follow original body lines, sometimes they have strange wood options, ugly hardware and overall pure craftmanship. but there is an opinion, that if it's make in Japan - it's automatically good.

Got myself a 3tm MP1 after your first video demoing that unit. It just looked and sounded so cool hearing some sick Ratt riffs out of it. Had it shipped to my door by the seller for $220 Canadian dollars. Looking at the prices people are asking now, there's no way I'd pick one up. The Nembrini plugin does an amazing job and my JCM 800 20watt with a Boss Super Overdrive in front just does THE thing.

There is something to bolt ons that i have gotten reattached to from neck thrus vibs and glued in set necks.. PRS really out did themselves and got the vibe right with their bolt ons .. plus yours is as nice as an Anderson id say.. I have my cream heavy metal Squire with the Floyd and HSS thats a fav.. and a custom quilted fender strat that is a beaut ..the way josh gushes over other pedals no sooner than not their price becomes more ridiculous than ridiculous... Really fantastic life advice Leon - balance is so important. You’re a good human being dude 😊🙏🏽Always inspiring to hear your thoughts on these subjects. Here’s an interesting Q for you btw - I’ve noticed that you move your pick hand position around whilst playing, picking different areas of the strings between the bridge pickup and the neck pickup. I think I know why you do it, but would be awesome to hear your viewpoint about it and it might help some folks out too with technique, etc. Anyways, have an awesome day! Also, I’ve been meaning to send you my Ampero Stage patches - just a little thank you for the solos! It keeps slipping my mind but I will get them over to you soon 😊🙏🏽

I started collecting rack gear before this "rack renaissance" came about, I scored an ADA MP-1 and the matching MIDI foot controller for $100 at a yard sale, the serial number dates to 1988. It was one of those deals you couldn't walk away from, when rack gear was still unfashionable and cheap. Used it as my primary amp for over a decade. Now I go and check every once and awhile, and I'm blown away how much those have risen in price since when I bought it.

Have you ever used the ADA "stomp" pedal that was released just a few years ago, or created a review video of that unit? If memory serves, I believe it was supposed to be sort of a pedal version reissue of the MP1. If so, you being someone who owns original rack unit versions, what are your thoughts on it? I did scroll through your uploads looking for a review video on it, but I didn't see any. Quite possible I may have overlooked it though. Thanks in advance!

In-ear monitors are so hard to dial in- especially the wireless ones. There's some kind of weird compression going on that makes it difficult to hear a proper mix without blowing your ears out. Plus they make me feel isolated from the crowd. Necessary if you're running tracks or click, though.

Totally concur about the Strat prices going up so much. I recently acquired a 1997 Collectors Series for an amp trade. It had already been modded with Suhr Pickups and Gold Evo Fretwire, (similar to Stainless), plus a new roller bearing nut. It still needed some work. The bridge was too wide for the neck, strings kept falling off the edge so I replaced it with a Floyd Rose Rail Tail and then I changed all pickups to Seymour Duncan Hotrails. Then changed the pickguard so I could only have one volume and one tone, I hate having the volume knob so close to my hand, with the volume being a push/pull to split the coils. Now we're talking! Point being, as you mentioned Leon, start with something and go from there. Starts were originally meant as something that could be easliy changed/fixed/modded no? Thank you Eddie and thanks for the content Leon! Up the irons!

About 20 years ago I had a buddy that bought an ADA MP1 that was supposedly owned by Frank Zappa and was used by Frank before he passed away. When he called and told me about it I drove right over and plugged it. It was lackluster to say the least. Like you said, they’re okay but modern gear can do those sounds no problem for a fraction of the price. My buddy was happy with owning the gear just for the story alone so it was a win for him but I wouldn’t buy one today for the prices they’re going for and with the options currently available.

I agree. I just bought a MP1 off of Reverb that was re tubed and "professionally serviced" The Presets sound horrible. The cleans are OK but anything with gain sounds horrible. Maybe its just me but it sounds nothing like the demos I've seen on CZcams and ones I've head in the past. I tried a factory reset and put new tubes in but not much of a difference. Tomorrow I'm going to try and put the original v1.37 chip back into it to see if that helps. It has the newest version 2.01 in it now.

    I’ve had a TS-10 for 30 years. It’s… OK.
I also have a TS-5, and I actually prefer the sound of that one, though it’s dodgy when it comes to the knobs and switch.
I had never heard of John Mayer when I bought the TS-10… though technically, we were at the same college at the same time.
If I met him while we were there, he apparently didn’t make an impression on me. Though I have met him 3 times since.
But, the couple of times anyone has asked me about the 10, I typically tell them to just go buy the JHS Bonsai. Cheaper. Same sound. More options.

I love my TS 10. I bought it because I couldn't afford the TS 9 which was already a bit overpriced (at least in my opinion) 25 years ago. Used price was about what you will pay for a cheap TS clone nowadays. Recently I bought some of those cheap clone pedals (Fuzz Face, Big Muff, Rat). They really do the job quite well sound wise. The Fuzz Face clone really gives you this great warm clean tone when you lower the volume of your guitar. But most my gear I do still buy used. So far none of the units failed on me and I only had one seller who didn't care when had his amp shipped to me-after shipping the tubes were broken.
So I got a lot of great experiences with buying good gear for reasonable prices on the used market. Don't really understand those hyped up prices.

The TS10 was my first pedal I ever bought in the 80's. I kept it in great shape as it was just for home use. When I saw what stupid prices people were paying, I sold it for $450 to a japanesse collector. It does have a slight discernable sound difference compared to other Ibanez tube screamer, but nothing earth shattering. And the 10 series are not build to last. The internal stomp switch is actually a computer keyboard button switch.

  • @JRP3music

I agree with your assessment of the ADA MP-1. I was a long time user of those preamps. I owned 2. I paid $800 back in '92. Including the midi controller. I got the 2nd for $100. They were unpopular by then. I still used them. I sold one, kept the other. I still have my rack gear. Plan to get Synergy preamps to rebuild the rack. I have just been more into into tube heads, which I avoided due to having to play them loud with a cab. The Two Notes Torpedo tech really woke me up to what I was missing. I still love the ADA. I can still get great sounds from it. My favorite feature besides the midi is the compression on the solid state clean channel.

@@jasondorsey7110 they are a reactive load. I guess it depends if you crank up the master or if you run higher watts then they are rated. I have not experienced going through tubes. I like the way the Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 works, I use the direct out (non-speaker sim) to get preamp/poweramp signal to my stereo fx. The stereo outs run to my Two Notes Torpedo Cab M IR boxes to PA and a stereo power amp and cabs. Sounds killer and manageable volume or silent with headphones.

    Hey Leon.
I just thought of a dumb specific question. If it's too dumb to answer I will understand. 😂
I was thinking I'm going to have to figure out the song Quicksand Jesus by Skidrow. That song on the Video of a live performance shows the guitar player using a black and white strat with single coils and the lead guitar really cuts. I'm wondering what amp model and delay and reverb settings and maybe EQ you would use for just that lead to get at least close to that sound of using a humbuckers guitar or would you just for sure for that song use a strat or something with singles or stacked singles to get it right? I'm asking because I'm not sure I can get that tone close enough with humbuckers. ?
Back in the day one had to have a guitar with humbuckers and a guitar with single coils to get both sounds and then you picked an amp and had pedals to change amp sounds, but luckily most amp sounds were either Fender or Marshall most of the time. We have it so good today with modellers and such. ❤ Gear is so much better in quality and consistency with CNC routers and such and with electronics and chips with all the power. I love it. ❤
My leg gets better all the time. I still have a slight limp and it's still difficult to walk very far and I won't be running any marathons soon, but I'm better and will continue to get better sir. !!!!
Thanks brother and I hope you and family and friends are well sir . God speed man❤

I think Fractual should put a tube preamp in the Axe FX. That would be like a ADA MP-1. Allow it to run through or bypass the tube circuit, maybe a tube for reverb and tremolo. He’ll the Carvin Quad X had 9 preamp tubes 😂 I wouldn’t miss my Synergy Syn 2 that I ran in a loop of the Axe FX 3 with synergy 50/50 Tube amp/cabs.

I bought a TS10 years ago for $20. It worked fine, but I sold it when prices popped up over a hundred bucks. I figured it was dumb to hold on to a (then) 20+ year old pedal that wasn't particularly special. I remember when 808s and early TS9s were crazy because of SRV, and it seemed like a newer version of the same kind of dumb cycle. I now use a really cheap Behringer clone that does basically the same thing. There may be a very subtle difference, but nothing I can't adjust for on the numerous other EQ and gain options in the signal chain.

if i'm not mistaken i think Paul Gilbert got hearing damage/tinnitus through hours and hours of studio recording at volume through headphones
but IEMs if used correctly i think will definitely save your ears with the isolation/protection from other loud elements Drums (Cymbals + snare at volume will certainly destroy your ears) you can more consistently control the volume, that's been my experience so far in any case, no more loud tube amps but my back and ears are definitely thankful
while not vintage i think it's crazy seeing how new epiphone + gibson prices have skyrocketted in the last years, but that's a whole other topic
i think the advent of more larger music gear related portals (reverb etc..) has really pushed up prices in general, people have a benchmark or more stats on used gear that they can use, as an example a local thrift store regularly prices music stuff according to the average sold price on reverb or some other sites, no matter if that price is inflated or not
anyhow, have a great easter Leon

The main problem with IEMs and hearing loss is damage occurs when you have live amps on a small stage and you’re crank the IEMs to rise above the amps. My band has gone completely zero amps on stage and drummer using electronic kits on small stages. It’s so lovely now. Yes I’m old.

I have a ts10 that was given to me back in the early 90's. Back then nobody really wanted them, a lot of people thought they looked cheaper than its predecessors and thought that it was a just a cheap pedal using the name. I've got to admit that I never really liked it and actually forgot about it for years until all the hype started. I recently got it out and compared it to all of my other overdrive pedals. My opinion of it still hasn't changed. I'm really only hanging on to it now until I find another piece of gear that I might want trade it for.

I had a TS10, because at the time, the 808 had been discontinued and I wanted to sound like SRV. I sold it for double the price I bought for it, so was very happy! It basically makes your tone really thin! I bought the duke of tone and it sounds great when I need that sound and it's tiny, no way would I be on a waiting list for the king of tone though! The JHS morning glory is pretty much has the same sound. I would say the the old BossSd1 could get most of those sounds. Probably better to invest in a good graphic EQ which can change any overdrive into a beast!

I do love it but I find it tiring to listen to after a while (much like the first two Extreme albums), totally not worth more than £250 though, the idea that they sell for almost as much as an original AxeFx is wild.
On IEM's crowd/ambiant mics go a long way to losing the isolation and desire to crank everything up. As someone who has played with and without IEMs (and just general hearing protection) for 20+ years, look after those ears kids/adults hearing loss and tinnitus isn't fun!
Adittionally if you think you do have hearing loss or tinnitus then go and get it checked out, week two of hearing aids here and it's transforming my life.

Its interesting that TS10's are now desirable. Back in the early 90s when I used to make clones of pedals, it was always the TS808 was better than the TS9 and that better than TS10. The reasoning being the opamps and a couple of component choices. And funny to think the RC4558's opamps used in the TS808s and TS9s in terms of electrical characteristics are probably the cheapest, nastiest opamps you could get at the time. Seemingly great in the application of overdrives 😂.
For me, I never understood the prices for Klons. Yeah its a unique circuit for the time, but nothing you couldn't knock up for yourself in an afternoon with a soldering iron. And there's that many clones out there these days too (much like tube screamers).
And yeah it's funny what people are commanding for used vintage gear. I remember during the late 890s/early 90s you couldn't give away Gibson LPs and SGs because everyone wanted PRS. Just because it's a vintage instrument, doesn't automatically make it worth a lot of money. There were just as many dogs as good guitars that came out of the 60/70/80s.
BTW I don't know about in ears, but Pete Townshends famously deaf from listening to headphones too loud (it wasn't the loud amps apparently).

I splurged for the original Rockman X100 . I tried plugins that were supposed to mimic the Rockman but the weren't quite there . I watched videos of newer Rockman style pedals compared to the OG Rockman and IMO they too were not quite there and cost around the same . I paid $430.00 shipped . While waiting for it to arrive I thought to myself "Jesse, wtf have you done!? $430 on an old plastic , digital amp simulator from 1982" HAHA I was 2 years old when it came out . I got it and plugged it in and I was amazed how good it sounded . I want to play it in my live rig but afraid it would do it in . I even asked Mr Scholz on facebook if he would release a pedal version of this . His reply message back was so kind , although he didn't say yes , he didn't say no . I think if he came out with a pedal of the Rockman , it would sell bigtime . And with today's technology he could create something really special .

There's treasure in pawn shops. A VOX tonelab se they were selling for less than two hundred bucks, for instance.

Definitely 70s Norlin Gibsons and CBS Fenders as someone else posted below. Mid 80s and early 90s guitars are often much better feeling. And 70s Guilds are nice as well.
Otherwise I would say old budget guitars and synthesizers.
Klons don’t even sound good, they sound nasal, no better in practical use than an eq pedal, at the cost of wet dry mix ruining interaction with your amp’s preamp. At least the King of Tone sounds great.

I had a ADA MP-1, Alesis Quadraverb and a Mesa Boogie rack mount head. Sold it all, along with my muscle car, to go to university back in the day. Never even crossed my mind to ask my parents for $$$. I guess I screwed up lol

I scoff at collectable used prices, however then I remember someone paid about 2 million for an unsealed copy of Super Mario Bros, its not about how good it is, its collector hype and value, the Helix KoT is undistinguished from the real deal in a mix. Any modern modeler can do exactly what the ADA does, probably get it out of the Pod Express for less than $200
