Youth unemployment in SA is a complex issue, but our education system must bear a huge responsibility. We pay a huge amount of government spending to secondary education, but probably get some of the worst outcomes. Many youth are just unemployable in a modern job market.

We used to have factories that employed, they all shut down, we used to have a lot of mines and they have been shutting down one by one leaving people unemployed.
All the government ever talks about is their plans to combat unemployment but I don't see any change. The only change I see is officials sharpening their corruption skills. R500 billion for covid gone within a space of 3 months. WTF!

Although the stats are a bit out of date and sources probably should be mentioned (also use nominal GDP to distinguish from PPP).
I would have compared education and access to electricity as well.
No offense to Egyptian and Nigerian citizens but for all its glaring problems South Africa’s far ahead of both nations. My opinion of course but if I had to live in any of these countries it’s no contest.
For instance, despite its corruption issues that South Africans often complain about when looking at league tables about corruption worldwide SA isn’t even on the same planet much less continent as these other two. And for those who complain why do you guys continue to vote for the ANC? One way to keep politicians honest (besides enforcing the law) is by punishing them at ballot box.
That leads me to another reason South Africa, though imperfect like all nations, is far superior is that it has rule of law. It has a protected dynamic media sector. If you don’t like something you can say so and organize to change it. Try doing that in Egypt. Let’s just say I hope you like jail cells… or life.
South Africa’s biggest issue is the huge wealth inequality particularly between the main groups. Much of this can be explained by overhang from the apartheid era but a lot of it is just plain incompetence on the part of the ANC. Which is why South Africans need to diversify their leadership. No nation does well when one political party has that much power. It invites corruption and incompetence. China is an excellent example. For all its wealth (nominal GDP) it is one of the most corrupt nations on Earth. Way more than South Africa’s government.

    National Annual Budgets 2020/2021:
    South Africa $129 billion
    Egypt $111 billion
    Nigeria $31 billion
To put it in perspective, South Africa's education budget for 2020/2021 is almost the size of the entire Nigerian Federal budget for the same period. The only thing Nigeria has is a big population, and millions of them live all around the world and remit billions of dollars to Nigeria annually. The end.

@@Tt-iu4vk I think it might have to do with the fact that the Nigerian economy other than oil is largely informal, hence their low unemployment rate report, their taxation system is not as advance as RSA in terms of taxation collection. the resultant being less money flowing to government particularly when the global oil prices are low. Remember MTN treatment. Before I get insulted by my beloved brothers I must say I think, I am not sure it's just my opinion nje.

South africa and Egypt have extremely high debt to gdp ratio, SA 90%, egypt 85%, Nigeria 30%, most of the 100 billion budget both countries have go to debt repayments, so they have to keep borrowing to balance there budgets, so both countries are actually not rich, they have heavy debt burden. If population was just used to measure gdp, then etiopia should be number 2, while congo 4, China no 1, oil and gas only adds 11% to Nigeria's gdp, Nigeria has a diverse economy, Nigeria is number 1 rice producer in africa, no 1 palm oil, no 1 cassava, no 1 fisheries, the list goes on, no 1 cement maanufacturer, no 1 indigenious car manufacturer, top IT, top refinery, top steel producer under construction, no 1 entertainment industry the list goes on, poverty in Nigeria is 40% 2020, not 70%, Soutn Africa poverty 2020 is 55.5%.

My advice: don’t go to Egypt neither to Nigeria. In South Africa, don’t go to Johannesburg. I told you.
