  • Morelli identifies 10 basic principles of military propaganda:
    1. We do not want war, we are only defending ourselves
According to Morelli, statesmen of all countries always solemnly assured that they did not want war. In society, wars are perceived negatively, except in extremely rare cases. With the advent of democracy, the consent of the population becomes mandatory, so war must be rejected by society. “If all leaders are inspired by the same will for peace, the question arises, why do wars eventually break out?” the researcher asks, but answers it in the second principle.
    2. Our enemy bears full responsibility for this war
This principle stems from the fact that each side must be forced to declare war to prevent the enemy from "destroying our values" and jeopardizing our freedom or destroying us completely. This is the paradox of war waged to prevent wars and refers to the phrase of George Orwell from his dystopian novel “1984”: “War is peace.” Ribbentrop justified the war against Poland with the words:
The Fuhrer doesn't want war. He decides to do this with a heavy heart. But the decision about war and peace does not depend on him. In certain matters of vital importance to the Reich, Poland must yield and comply with demands without which we cannot do without. If Poland refuses, responsibility for the conflict will fall on it, not Germany.
    3. The leader of our enemy is initially evil and looks like the devil
Personifying the image of the enemy in the eyes of citizens is the most important task. Morelli writes: “You cannot hate a group of people as a whole, even as your enemies. Therefore, it is more effective to direct hatred towards the leading person of the enemy country. Thus, the 'enemy' will have a face, and this face will naturally become the object of hatred."
    4. We defend a noble cause, not our special interests.
Morelli analyzes that the economic and geopolitical goals of war must be disguised by ideal, moral and legal values. Thus, George Bush Sr., speaking about the war in the Persian Gulf, said: “The fight is not for oil, but against brutal aggression.” On January 22, 1991, Le Monde wrote:
The goals of this war are primarily the goals of the UN Security Council. We are involved in this war for the reasons underlying the decisions of the Security Council, and our goal, in essence, is the liberation of Kuwait.
    5. The enemy purposefully commits atrocities; if we make mistakes, it happens without intention
According to Morelli, stories about enemy atrocities are an essential element of propaganda. Insisting that only the enemy committed atrocities makes the stories of atrocities part of propaganda. According to her, war propaganda is not content with real incidents, it must invent inhuman atrocities to make the enemy look like Hitler's alter ego.
    6. The enemy uses prohibited weapons
This principle is considered by Morelli in addition to the previous one. During World War I, each warring side accused the other of using poison gas. Although both sides used gas and conducted research in this area, it was a symbolic expression of inhumane war. Therefore, according to Morelli, it was attributed to the enemy as an indecent and insidious weapon.
    7. Our losses are small, the enemy’s losses are significant
Morelli explains this principle this way:
With rare exceptions, people tend to join a winning cause. In the event of war, the preference of public opinion depends largely on the apparent results of the conflict. If the results are not good, propaganda must disguise our losses and exaggerate the enemy's losses.
    8. Our cause is supported by recognized intellectuals and artists
According to Morelli, after the First World War, intellectuals largely supported their own camp en masse. Each side of the war could count on the support of artists, writers and musicians who supported the interests of their countries through initiatives in their fields of activity.
    9. Our cause is sacred
This principle is understood by the researcher in two ways: in the literal sense, the war appears as a crusade, supported by a divine mission. Political decisions become biblical in nature, eliminating all social and economic problems. The reference to God is made in various ways (“In God we trust,” “God save the Queen,” “God with us,” etc.) and serves to justify the actions of the sovereign without the slightest chance of contradiction.
    10. Anyone who questions our propaganda is helping the enemy and is a traitor.
The last principle complements all the others, explains Morelli. Anyone who questions even one of the principles is necessarily a collaborator. There are only two areas: good and bad. You can only be for evil or against it. By this logic, opponents of the Kosovo War are Milosevic's accomplices.
