Japan's $20 Billion Dollar Floating Airport Is Sinking

- Japan is filled with a plethora of expensive and innovative engineering marvels, but not all of the country’s major infrastructure projects have gone according to plan. The Kansai International Airport might be one of the biggest blunders in Japan’s engineering history. It’s built of reclaimed land in Osaka Bay, and it’s sinking into the water. Engineers always expected the island to sink a bit, but they seriously underestimate just how much the airport’s artificial islands would sink. By 2056, some experts believe that the airport will reach sea level, which will pose a significant risk to the airport terminals and runways. So far, engineers have come up with a few innovative solutions to slow down the sinking, but these are just stopgap measures. The airport might continue to sink for 100 years or more, but if the speed of sinking accelerates the airport will likely have to be abandoned. Construction of the Kansai International Airport began way back in 1987, and the project was originally supposed to cost about $8 billion. However, the total cost to build the airport has since skyrocketed to $20 billion because of all the costly repairs. Iron plates under the foundation and a stronger seawall are two of the ways engineers are improving the Kansai International Airport. These measures should slow down the rate at which the airport is sinking. Here’s a look at Japan’s $20-billion floating airport and what’s being done to stop it from sinking. Keep watching to find out more about the Kansai International Airport.

The fatal flaw was they didn't believe the ocean required compensation.
As Engineers we understand compensation. WTF!!
The fatal flaw is that the Japanese slaughter tens of thousands of dolphins every single year.
The Japanese actually hold slaughter-fest in which they rounded up the dolphins by the thousands and slaughter them, dyeing the whole sea red.

Regardless of their failures, Japan seems to be properly invested in the public, imagine what the states could do if they took 50-100 billion from their overinflated defence budget.
Japan's annual defense budget is around $50bn. And it's about 1% of GDP.

it may still be possible to operate the airport below sealevel, but the cost of multi-layer seawalls, canals and pumping infrastructure would be considerable. It would also have a greater impact on the surrounding ecosystem and shipping routes.

I read about 20 years ago that the main reason it is sinking is because the landfilling needed more time to settle.
Love japan ❤️
Damn! I was a Marine stationed in Japan until 2022. Some of my favorite memories were road-tripping from Hiroshima/Iwakuni to KSI/Osaka to pick up other service members. I was mind-blown the first time I drove on the airport and realized it was an island of its own. Beautiful drive. Side note; It was also very creepy during COVID as most shops looked abandoned inside. One of the creepiest/most depressing things I saw quite honestly...
Excilent good making 🤗👁🦋🌍
It's a terrific airport and it is so easy to get to by train, bus or car. I had heard it was sinking but didn't realise just how rapidly. Too bad. As the narrator mentioned, it was built in the bay because there is really no space for it on land nearby. Japan is extremely mountainous and most people live in the plains which are very crowded.
Another big factor is that they wanted it to be able to have a 24 hour non stop operation which wasn't possible with an inland option. Also there had been a great deal of protests from the Narita airport works and the land take-overs that it required, something they didn't want to deal with.
3:03 Nice. 😅
But seriously, I've been through this airport and it is quite amazing.

There should be also a law that must be signed by ALL countries, where it states, that shit that was built and is abandoned must be disassembled to clean up the space.
The only leftovers should be sand and wood. No bricks, asphalt, metals etc.
I have the feeling that we are in a age where we build a lot of buildings and companies just leave their shit there without cleaning up.
its cheaper.
Just how oil companies leave oil rigs to rot and collapse into the ocean.
cheaper to forget than to dismantle.
Lmao I’m doing construction right now but I’m on break, and yes we clean it up, or you get a call the next day telling you to lol
I would say to build walls around the airport underwater and compacted with the same things that was used to make the lsland but have the walls support on the out side and steel clamps where they connect but those walls be as deep as can be

I was there in 1998 & 1999. Big airport!
The same story about the sinking "Kankuu" (as Kansai airport is known locally) gets recycled over and over again. It sinks a little and the engineers come up with something. It was too politically insensitive to build it on land. Look up the building of Narita airport before the 1964 Olympics for a much more interesting if not heartbreaking Japanese airport story.
When people go beyond the extreme but forget the repercussions. 😏
I used to live in front of this airport, which is about seven minutes train ride from the terminal. Serious problem, indeed. ;-(

How deep is the water there? And what is the cost to build underwater pillars to hold it?
No ,the airport is floating it is supported by cylinders of concretes wich upsides down,,for example when you out an empty cup in water in upside down it does not sink first coz the air is trapped here
